Siman ר״ו · What binds a blessing to what one eats
דיני הפסק וטעות בברכת הפירות — the formula said wrongly (בירך על פירות האילן בורא פרי האדמה), the blessing that exempts another when that was intended, the silence required between the blessing and the first bite, the voice, decency and the right hand, the thing that must be there (עד שיביאוהו לפניו), and the fruit that falls from the hand

✦ ❖ ✦
The preceding simanim said which blessing belongs to which food. This one asks the next question — and it is the one that really comes up at the table: what binds a blessing to what one eats? I said “ha-adama” over an apple: must I start again? Someone spoke to me between the blessing and the bite: does it matter? More fruit is brought afterwards: must I bless again? The fruit fell from my hand: and what of the Name I have already uttered? Hebrew text, an English translation and an explanation of the ו׳ seifim, together with a section of practical cases.

A blessing is not a formula one recites: it is a bond tied between a word and a thing. This whole siman takes that bond apart to show its three fastenings. The first is the word: the formula must be true of this particular food — and it turns out that בורא פרי האדמה remains true of an apple, while בורא פרי העץ is false of a radish. The second is continuity: between the word and the bite nothing may come in — no stray speech, no indecent body, no empty hand. The third is presence: a blessing cannot settle on what is not there, nor remain settled on what has disappeared. Here we study the principle; for personal practice one follows the ruling of one’s Rav.
📑 Plan of the study
A.טעות וכוונה בברכה (seifim 1-2) — the formula said wrongly, and the blessing that exempts another
B.הפסק והכשר המברך (seif 3) — interruption, voice, language and decency
C.אחיזה בימין ולפניו (seifim 4-5) — the right hand, and the thing that must be there
D.נפל מידו ונאבד (seif 6) — the lost fruit and the Name uttered
1-3.Practical cases and comprehension questions
A. טעות וכוונה בברכה — the formula and the intention
טָעוּת בַּבְּרָכָה — an error of formula. Two blessings resemble one another and yet are not equal: בורא פרי האדמה names the ground, בורא פרי העץ names the tree. But the tree itself comes out of the ground: the Gemara says so in a single question — מאן תנא דעיקר אילן ארעא היא (ברכות מ׳ ע״א). One who says “fruit of the ground” over an apple has said nothing false; one who says “fruit of the tree” over a radish has. From this comes the whole first half of the siman — and the rule of practice in case of doubt.
Seif 1: one who blessed “borei pri ha-adama” over fruits of the tree has fulfilled his obligation; but if he blessed “borei pri ha-etz” over a fruit of the ground, he has not. Therefore, if he is in doubt about a fruit — is it a fruit of the tree or a fruit of the ground? — he blesses “borei pri ha-adama”. And over everything, if he said “shehakol”, he has fulfilled his obligation, and even over bread and wine.
The two errors are not equal: בירך על פירות האילן בורא פרי האדמה יצא (שו״ע או״ח ר״ו:א), but אבל אם בירך על פרי האדמה בורא פרי העץ לא יצא (שו״ע או״ח ר״ו:א). This is word for word the Mishna: בירך על פירות האילן בורא פרי האדמה יצא ועל פירות הארץ בורא פרי העץ לא יצא ועל כולם אם אמר שהכל נהיה בדברו יצא (ברכות מ׳ ע״א). summary: “fruit of the ground” is the genus and “fruit of the tree” the species; the genus stays true of the species, the species is not true of the genus.
And the reason lies in a single question of the Gemara: מאן תנא דעיקר אילן ארעא היא (ברכות מ׳ ע״א) — the tree itself is rooted in the earth. The Mishna Berura draws a strong consequence: הואיל ועיקר האילן הוא מן הארץ ולא שיקר בברכתו ואפילו הזיד בזה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ו:א). summary: this is not leniency granted to the careless; it is that the formula he said is true.
Hence the practice in case of doubt: But the Mishna Berura sets a limit to the device: וכן כשהוא ספק לו מצד הדין אבל אם הוא ספק לו מחמת שלא למד לא יאכל עד שילמוד (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ו:ד). summary: the doubt one may lawfully sidestep is a doubt of halakha, not a doubt of ignorance.
And one blessing still covers everything: The Gemara had argued the point — רב הונא אמר חוץ מן הפת ומן היין (ברכות מ׳ ע״ב) against ורבי יוחנן אמר אפילו פת ויין (ברכות מ׳ ע״ב) — and the Rambam rules like the Mechaber: ועל כלם אם ברך שהכל יצא ואפלו על הפת ועל היין (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק ח הלכה י). Yet the Mishna Berura recalls that this is only after the fact:
Seif 2: he had before him a fruit of the ground and a fruit of the tree, and he blessed over the fruit of the ground intending to exempt the fruit of the tree — he has fulfilled his obligation.
One blessing can exempt another — but through the will: The Beit Yossef brings it in the name of Rabbenu Yona:
It is not automatic, and the Beit Yossef gives the reason: שאינו בדין שיפטור מי שאינו חשוב את שהוא חשוב דרך גררא אלא דרך כוונה (בית יוסף או״ח סימן ר״ו). summary: the lesser does not drag the greater along in its wake; it must be aimed at.
And one does not do it willingly: The Mishna Berura also explains the force of “before him”: נקט לפניו לרבותא דאפילו היה לפניו פה״ע כשבירך לא נפטר ממילא אא״כ נתכוין בהדיא לפטור (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ו:ח). summary: the seif teaches what is valid, not what is desirable.
B. הפסק והכשר המברך — interruption and the conditions of the one who blesses
Seif 3: all these blessings, one must not interrupt between the blessing and the eating. Gloss: more than the time of a single utterance (Beit Yossef in the name of the Shibolei haLeket). And one must make it audible to his ears; and if he did not make it audible, he has fulfilled his obligation, provided he articulated it with his lips. And they may be said in any language. And one shall not bless while naked, until he covers his nakedness. Of whom was this said? Of a man; but a woman sits, and her lower face is pressed against the ground, for thereby her nakedness is covered (and see above siman 74, seif 4). And even if he is not naked, if his heart sees the nakedness, or if his head is uncovered, it is forbidden to bless.
Silence between the word and the bite: כל אלו הברכו׳ צריך שלא יפסיק בין ברכ׳ לאכיל׳ (שו״ע או״ח ר״ו:ג), and the gloss gives the measure: יותר מכדי דיבור (רמ״א או״ח ר״ו:ג). The Beit Yossef shows the source: זה פשוט מדאמרינן בפרק כיצד מברכין שם דטול ברוך או גביל לתורי לא הוי הפסק בין ברכה לאכילה משמע שאם דיבר שאר דברים שאינם מצרכי סעודה הוי הפסק וצריך לחזור ולברך (בית יוסף או״ח סימן ר״ו) — for the Gemara distinguishes טול ברוך טול ברוך אינו צריך לברך (ברכות מ׳ ע״א) from גביל לתורי גביל לתורי צריך לברך (ברכות מ׳ ע״א).
The Mishna Berura puts a figure on the delay and separates silence from speech: היינו כדי שאילת תלמיד לרב שהוא שלום עליך רבי ויותר מהכי חשיב הפסק (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ו:יב), and ומיירי בשתיקה אבל דיבור אפילו מלה אחת הוי הפסק כל שהוא שלא לצורך הברכה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ו:יב). summary: staying silent too long does not undo the blessing after the fact; speaking does.
The Mishna Berura draws the limit: The Rambam, however, writes otherwise — כל הברכות כלן צריך שישמיע לאזנו מה שהוא אומר ואם לא השמיע לאזנו יצא בין שהוציא בשפתיו בין שברך בלבו (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק א הלכה ז); the point is developed at Level 2.
The language: ונאמרי׳ בכל לשון (שו״ע או״ח ר״ו:ג) — and the Mishna had already stated it: ואלו נאמרים בכל לשון פרשת סוטה וידוי מעשר קריאת שמע ותפלה וברכת המזון (ברכות מ׳ ע״ב). The Rambam attaches a condition:
The source is the Gemara: האשה יושבת וקוצה לה חלתה ערומה מפני שיכולה לכסות פניה בקרקע אבל לא האיש (ברכות כ״ד ע״א), and the Rambam writes likewise: ואסור למברך לברך כשהוא ערם עד שיכסה ערותו במה דברים אמורים באיש אבל באשה יושבת ופניה טוחות בקרקע ומברכת (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק א הלכה ט).
And clothing is not always enough: ואפילו אם אינו ערום אם לבו רואה את הערוה או שראשו מגולה אסור לברך (שו״ע או״ח ר״ו:ג). summary: the blessing asks not only for a mouth that articulates, but for a bearing that suits what is about to be said.
C. אחיזה בימין ולפניו — the right hand and presence
Seif 4: anything over which one blesses in order to eat it or to smell it, he must hold it in his right hand while he blesses.
The right hand holds what it blesses: The Beit Yossef derives it from a baraita:
Two reasons, and a limited scope: טעם האחיזה כדי שיכוין לבו על מה שמברך והוא רק לכתחלה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ו:יז), and as to the right side — הטעם משום חשיבות (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ו:יח). summary: to hold is already to turn the heart towards the object; the right hand is to honour it.
Seif 5: one does not bless over food or over drink until it is brought before him. If he blessed and then it was brought before him, he must bless another time. But one who blessed over fruits that were before him, and afterwards more of the same kind was brought to him, or of another kind whose blessing is like that of the first, need not bless. Gloss: and it is good to be careful from the outset to have in mind everything that will be brought to him (Beit Yossef, Tour Yoreh Deah siman 19).
Nothing is blessed before it is there: אין מברכין לא על אוכל ולא על משקה עד שיביאוהו לפניו (שו״ע או״ח ר״ו:ה), and therefore בירך ואח״כ הביאוהו לפניו צריך לברך פעם אחרת (שו״ע או״ח ר״ו:ה). The Rambam writes the same:
And good intention is no substitute: ואפי׳ כוון דעתו עליהם בשעת ברכה ג״כ לא מהני כיון שאז לא היו לפניו ולא היה להברכה על מה לחול (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ו:יט). summary: it is not a question of distraction but of grip — a blessing needs an object to settle on.
But what arrives afterwards is already covered: The Beit Yossef defines the scope:
D. נפל מידו ונאבד — the lost fruit and the Name uttered
Seif 6: he took a fruit in his hand in order to eat it and blessed over it, and it fell from his hand and was lost, or became repugnant — he must bless again, even though more of that kind was before him when he blessed over the first. Gloss: only if he did not intend to eat it (Haggahot Maimoniyot chapter 4, Kol Bo, Agur, Abudarham and a responsum of the Maharil siman 92). And he must say “Baruch shem kevod malchuto le’olam va’ed”, for having uttered the Name of Heaven in vain. And if, when it fell, he had said “Baruch ata Hashem” and had not said “Elokeinu”, let him finish and say “lamdeni chukecha”, so that it appears as reading a verse and there is no Name of Heaven uttered in vain. But one who stands at a water channel blesses and drinks, even though the water he drinks was not before him when he blessed, because such was his intention from the start. Gloss: and see above, seif 1, what the law is if he blessed in error.
What disappears takes the blessing with it: נטל בידו פרי לאכלו ובירך עליו ונפל מידו ונאבד או נמאס צריך לחזור ולברך (שו״ע או״ח ר״ו:ו), and this אף ע״פ שהיה מאותו מין לפניו יותר כשבירך על הראשון (שו״ע או״ח ר״ו:ו). The Rambam says the same: נטל אכל וברך עליו ונפל מידו ונשרף או שטפו נהר נוטל אחר וחוזר ומברך עליו אף על פי שהוא מאותו המין (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק ד הלכה י); and the Beit Yossef widens the case: וכתב ה״ר מנוח דלאו דוקא נפל מידו ונאבד אלא ה״ה אם נפל ונמאס לאכילה ופשוט הוא (בית יוסף או״ח סימן ר״ו).
The gloss narrows it: רק שלא היה דעתו עליו לאכלו (רמ״א או״ח ר״ו:ו), which the Mishna Berura explains: ר״ל שלא היה דעתו בפירוש בשעת ברכה על כולם רק בסתמא דאם היה בדעתו בשעת ברכה לאכול גם השאר א״צ לחזור ולברך (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ו:כו). summary: if the other fruits were already in his mind, the blessing still holds them.
And what of the Name already uttered?וצריך לומ׳ ברוך שם כבוד מלכותו לעולם ועד על שהוציא ש״ש לבטלה (שו״ע או״ח ר״ו:ו) — this is the word of the Yerushalmi brought by the Beit Yossef: א״ר תנחום צ״ל בשכמל״ו שלא להזכיר ש״ש לבטלה (בית יוסף או״ח סימן ר״ו), and the Rambam writes it too: וצריך לומר ברוך שם כבוד מלכותו לעולם ועד על ברכה ראשונה כדי שלא להוציא שם שמים לבטלה (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק ד הלכה י).
And if he stopped in time, there is a better way: ואם אמר כשנפל ברוך אתה ה׳ ולא אמר אלהינו יסיים ויאמר למדני חוקיך שיהא נראה כקורא פסוק ואין כאן מוציא ש״ש לבטלה (שו״ע או״ח ר״ו:ו). summary: the first three words of every blessing are also the opening of a verse in Psalms; whoever completes that verse has uttered nothing in vain.
And one exception that lights up the whole rule: The Yerushalmi itself sets up the comparison: Finally the gloss points back:
The siman in one sentence: a blessing holds to its object by three fastenings — the word (בורא פרי האדמה stays true of a tree fruit, בורא פרי העץ is not true of a vegetable, and שהכל covers everything), continuity (no stray speech, no silent mouth, no indecent body, no empty hand between the blessing and the bite) and presence (nothing is blessed before it is there, and what disappears takes the blessing with it — except the water of the channel, which one knew would come).
Practical cases
Case 1 — I said “borei pri ha-adama” over an apple
Situation: absent-mindedly I recited בורא פרי האדמה over an apple. Must I bless again? And what if it were the reverse — בורא פרי העץ over a carrot?
Practice: in the first case no — בירך על פירות האילן בורא פרי האדמה יצא (שו״ע או״ח ר״ו:א) — because the ground carries the tree: מאן תנא דעיקר אילן ארעא היא (ברכות מ׳ ע״א). In the second, yes: And had one said שהכל over either, one would be quit of both: ועל הכל אם אמר שהכל יצא ואפילו על פת ויין (שו״ע או״ח ר״ו:א) — but only after the fact, since וכ״ז דיעבד אבל לכתחלה צריך לברך על כל דבר ברכתו המיוחדת לו (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ו:ה). For practice, follow your Rav.
Case 2 — More fruit is brought after the blessing
Situation: I blessed over a bowl of strawberries set before me; then cherries are brought, and after them a fruit platter that had not yet left the kitchen when I blessed.
But one does not bless in advance over what is not there: אין מברכין לא על אוכל ולא על משקה עד שיביאוהו לפניו (שו״ע או״ח ר״ו:ה), and ואפי׳ כוון דעתו עליהם בשעת ברכה ג״כ לא מהני כיון שאז לא היו לפניו ולא היה להברכה על מה לחול (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ו:יט). Hence the gloss’s advice: For practice, follow your Rav.
Case 3 — The fruit fell from my hand right after the blessing
Situation: I have just blessed, the fruit slips from my hand and rolls on the floor; it is lost, or soiled. What of the blessing — and of the Name I have already uttered?
Finally, if the fruit is only slightly spoiled, the Mishna Berura teaches that For practice, follow your Rav.
Comprehension questions
Check your understanding:
Why does בורא פרי האדמה discharge the duty over a tree fruit, and why does the reverse not work (seif 1)?
What is the difference between the doubt resolved by בורא פרי האדמה and the doubt the Mishna Berura refuses to let pass (seif 1)?
Why does the blessing of seif 2 exempt the tree fruit only if that was intended (seif 2)?
What counts as an interruption between the blessing and the bite — and what does not (seif 3)?
Why does good intention not replace the presence of the food (seif 5), and why is the man at the water channel an exception (seif 6)?
