Siman רי״א · Which one first?

דיני קדימה בברכת הפירות — the kind for which the land of Israel is praised (מין שבעה), the food one prefers (חביב), the more specific blessing (בפה״ע קודמת) and the order of the verse (כל הקודם בפסוק קודם לברכה)

✦ ❖ ✦

The preceding simanim said which blessing belongs to which food. This one takes that as settled and asks another question, one met at every meal: a bowl of fruit is in front of me — which do I start with? Four titles of precedence compete for first place, and the whole art of the siman is to say which yields to which. Hebrew text, English translation and an explanation of the ו׳ seifim, together with a section of practical cases.

One thing is settled from the preceding simanim: every food has its blessing. This siman starts from there and asks the next question, which is a question of order. And everything in its answer turns on a single hinge: do the two foods have the same blessing or not? If they do, one blessing is going to cover both, and he must choose which to say it over — that is where the seven species and the favourite food come into play. If they do not, two blessings will be needed in any case, and the siman brings two views on whether any order still applies. We study here at the level of principle; for personal practice one follows the ruling of one's Rav.

📑 Plan of the study

A. מין שבעה וחביב (seifim 1-2) — the seven species, the favourite food, and the Rambam's shitah
B. חשיבות הברכה (seif 3) — the specific blessing before the general one
C. המוקדם בפסוק (seifim 4-5) — the order of the verse, wine, bread, and the limits of it all
D. מעשה קדרה (seif 6) — the cooked grain dish and the full ladder
1-3. Practical cases and questions for review

A. מין שבעה וחביב — the seven species and the favourite fruit

מִין שִׁבְעָה — the seven products for which Scripture praises the land of Israel. The Mishna Berura lists them by citing the verse: ר״ל שנשתבחה ארץ ישראל בהן דכתיב ארץ חטה ושעורה וגפן ותאנה ורמון ארץ זית שמן ודבש (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:ג). And חָבִיב — what is dear to a man — is not the craving of the moment: the siman defines it itself, ונקרא חביב המין שרגיל להיו׳ חביב עליו אפי׳ אם עתה חפץ במין השני (שו״ע או״ח רי״א:א). The whole question of the siman is which of the two titles prevails, and in which case.

Seif 1: he had many kinds of fruit before him — if their blessings are the same and one of them is of the seven species, he gives precedence to the kind of the seven species, even though it is not as dear to him as the other kind; and if none of them is of the seven species, he gives precedence to the one that is dear to him. And if their blessings are not the same — even if one of them is of the seven species, such as a radish and an olive — he gives precedence to whichever he wishes, even to one that is not dear to him. And some say that here too he must give precedence to the one that is dear to him. And what is called dear is the kind that is habitually dear to him, even if now he desires the other kind.
The precondition that comes before everything. This siman speaks only of someone who intends to eat of both: ודוקא שגם דעתו היה לאכול מכולם הא אם אין כולם לפניו או שאין דעתו לאכול מכולם אין שייך בזה דין קדימה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:א). summary: if one of the two is not yet on the table, or if he does not intend to taste it, there is simply no question of order.
First case: the same blessing, and one kind is of the seven species. It adds that this title outweighs even the condition of the fruit: ואם שניהם ממין אחד משבעת המינים או ששניהם אינם מין שבעה מקדים השלם ואפילו אם החצי חביב יותר שלם עדיף (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:ד). summary: since one blessing is going to cover both, better that it be said over what the land of Israel is praised for.
Second case: the same blessing, and none of the seven species. ואם אין ביניהם ממין שבעה מקדים החביב (שו״ע או״ח רי״א:א), and dear here means, as the Mishna Berura specifies, היינו שרגיל להיות תמיד חביב עליו וכדלקמיה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:ו). summary: with no objective title in play, a man's settled taste decides.
Third case: two different blessings. It also specifies what the example is about: דוקא בזה דברכת הצנון בפה״א אבל אם היה דבר שברכתו שהכל בודאי מברך על הזית תחלה וכדלקמיה בס״ג (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:ח). summary: radish and olive do not share a blessing, and neither exempts the other — so for this first view there is nothing left to place ahead of anything.
And the second view, which is the one followed. וי״א שגם בזה צריך להקדי׳ החביב (שו״ע או״ח רי״א:א); the Mishna Berura sets it out: ס״ל דגם בזה שייך מעלת הקדימה לברך על מין אחד תחלה אלא דס״ל דלא מקדמינן בזה מין שבעה אלא החביב לו יותר יקדימנו לברך עליו ולאכול תחלה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:ט), אכן אם שני המינים חביבים אצלו בשוה אז מברך על מין שבעה תחלה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:ט), and the Beur Halacha goes so far as to put the two views back in their places: מה שכתב המחבר דעה זו בשם י״א אינו מדוקדק דאדרבה דעה ראשונה היא דעת איזה יחידאי (ביאור הלכה סימן רי״א), before concluding ולענ״ד למעשה טוב יותר לנהוג כדעת האחרונים בזה דחביב עדיף (ביאור הלכה סימן רי״א). summary: even where the blessings differ, one begins with the favourite fruit; and if both please him equally, with the kind of the seven species.
What dear means, and how one goes about it. ונקרא חביב המין שרגיל להיו׳ חביב עליו אפי׳ אם עתה חפץ במין השני (שו״ע או״ח רי״א:א); the Mishna Berura describes the manoeuvre: ומשמע מדברי הפוסקים דיתנהג כך יברך על המין שרגיל להיות תמיד חביב עליו ויטעום קצת ממנו ואח״כ יאכל המין שחפץ עכשיו לאכלו ואחר גמר אכילתו יחזור לאכול המין הראשון (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:י), while leaving room for the other reading: ומ״מ המברך על מה שחביב עתה בעיניו ג״כ יש לו על מי לסמוך דיש פוסקים שסוברים דחביב נקרא מה שהוא חביב עליו עכשיו (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:יא). summary: one blesses over the fruit one usually loves, tastes a little of it, and then eats the one he feels like today.

Seif 2: and according to the Rambam, if one kind is dearer to him — whether their blessings are the same or not, whether one of them is of the seven species or not — he gives precedence to the one that is dear to him then, at that hour. And if he does not want this one more than that one, if one of them is of the seven species, over it he blesses first.
The Mechaber brings a whole second shitah here. וכל הקודם בפסוק קודם בברכה (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק ח הלכה יג). summary: for the Rambam the favourite always comes first, and the seven species serve only to decide between two foods equally desired.
Two disagreements in one. The Mishna Berura separates them: פליג על דעה ראשונה וס״ל דחביב עדיף לעולם ואף דברכותן שוות ויש בהם מין שבעה חביב קודם לברך עליו (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:יב) — that is the first; and גם בזה פליג על דעה ראשונה וס״ל דאינו נקרא חביב מה שחביב עליו תמיד אלא מה שחביב עליו באותה שעה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:יג) — that is the second. summary: the Rambam differs both on the ranking (the favourite before the seven species) and on the very definition of favourite (today's appetite, not the habitual taste).
And the halacha? ואם אינו רוצ׳ בזה יותר מבזה אם יש ביניה׳ משבעת המינים עליו מברך תחלה (שו״ע או״ח רי״א:ב); but the Mishna Berura notes how the Mechaber wrote his siman: ומשמע מסתימת המחבר דהעיקר כדעה הראשונה שהיא דעת רוב הפוסקים (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:יג). summary: the first view, brought anonymously in seif 1, remains the main one; the Rambam's is not discarded for all that, and the Turei Zahav writes on this ולענין ההלכה אין כאן שום חשש דבכל הדרכים יש לו על מה לסמוך (ט״ז או״ח סימן רי״א).

B. חשיבות הברכה — the more specific blessing

Seif 3: they brought before him something whose blessing is borei pri ha-etz and something whose blessing is shehakol — borei pri ha-etz comes first, because it is the weightier one, exempting only one thing. And likewise with borei pri ha-adama and shehakol: borei pri ha-adama comes first. And if they brought before him borei pri ha-etz and borei pri ha-adama, he gives precedence to whichever he wishes; and some say that borei pri ha-etz comes first.
A title of precedence of an altogether different order. Here it is no longer the food that is weighed but the wording: הביאו לפניו דבר שברכתו בפה״ע ודבר שברכתו שהכל בפה״ע קודמת שהיא חשובה שאינה פוטרת אלא דבר אחד (שו״ע או״ח רי״א:ג), and the Mishna Berura explains the test: פי׳ דברכת בפה״ע מבוררת טפי על איזה מברך וחשובה היא מברכת שהכל שאינה רק ברכה כוללת לכל המינים (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:טו). summary: a blessing that names precisely what it blesses is worth more than a formula that covers everything; the Tur had already said of shehakol ושהכל כוללת כל הדברים (טור או״ח סימן רי״א).
This title does not even yield to the favourite food. And the same reasoning holds for ha-adama: וכן בפה״א ושהכל בפה״א קודמת (שו״ע או״ח רי״א:ג), חשובה נמי משהכל דמברר בהברכה רק מיני פה״א משא״כ שהכל דכוללת הכל (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:טז). summary: between the precise and the general, precision wins, and personal taste has no say here.
The table ruling the Mishna Berura draws from it. וע״כ כשמביאים לפניו יי״ש עם מרקחת יברך על המרקחת תחלה אף שהיי״ש חביב עליו יותר (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:טז). summary: faced with a glass of spirits and a fruit preserve, one blesses the preserve first — even though it is the glass one is waiting for.
And between tree and ground? The Mishna Berura specifies what is being discussed — ואין תלוי כלל בחביב לדעה הראשונה שבס״א דהא אין ברכותיהן שוות ולי״א שם מיירי הכא ששניהם חביבים עליו בשוה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:יז) — and rules: והסכימו האחרונים דנכון לנהוג כי״א הזה אם שניהם שוים בחביבות אכן אם פה״א חביב עליו יותר מברך על החביב כנ״ל בס״א (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:יח), as does the Turei Zahav: ונראה דיש לנו לפסוק בזה דאם חביב לו יותר בפ״הא יברך תחלה כדיעה ראשונה ואם שוים בחביבות יברך בפה״ע תחלה כדיעה בתרא (ט״ז או״ח סימן רי״א). summary: where both please him equally, ha-etz first; but if the produce of the ground is the favourite, it goes ahead.

C. המוקדם בפסוק — the order of the verse

הַמּוּקְדָּם בַּפָּסוּק — what comes first in the verse. The principle is amoraic: כל המוקדם בפסוק זה, מוקדם לברכה (ברכות מ״א ע״א). The verse in question is the one praising the land of Israel, which the Mishna Berura quotes in full: ר״ל שנשתבחה ארץ ישראל בהן דכתיב ארץ חטה ושעורה וגפן ותאנה ורמון ארץ זית שמן ודבש (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:ג). One peculiarity of its wording governs everything: the word ארץ occurs there a second time, in the middle of the list.

Seif 4 —

Seif 4: whatever comes first in the verse a land of wheat and barley comes first for the blessing. And the second land interrupted the sequence, and whatever is close to it is weightier than what is further from it to the first land. Therefore dates come before grapes, for the former is second to the latter land and the latter is third to the first land. Gloss: and this only where he eats grapes as they are; but if he made wine from them, which fixes a blessing of its own, borei pri hagafen is the weightier one and it comes first, to be blessed before. But a cooked dish of the five kinds of grain is weightier than the blessing over wine. Everything stated next to the first land comes before what is stated next to the second land, once it is equal to it in nearness to land (Tur).
The verse itself has ranked them. כל הקודם בפסוק ארץ חטה ושעור׳ קודם לברכה (שו״ע או״ח רי״א:ד), and the Mishna Berura gives the reason: דמקרא זה חושב המינים שנשתבחה בהן א״י וכל המוקדם בפסוק הוא יותר חשוב מהמאוחר לפיכך הוא קודם לברכה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:יט). summary: rank within the verse is a measure of weight, and that weight settles the order of blessing.
The break made by the second ארץ. וארץ בתרא הפסיק הענין וכל הסמוך לו חשוב מהמאוחר ממנו לארץ קמא (שו״ע או״ח רי״א:ד); the Mishna Berura unfolds it: דכן הוא סדר המקרא ארץ חטה ושעורה וגפן ותאנה ורמון ארץ זית שמן ודבש ומארץ שבאמצע הוי התחלת סדר וכל הסמיך לו חשוב יותר מהמאוחר שבארץ קמא (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:כא). summary: the list is not read straight through but in two starts, and one counts each fruit's distance from the land it belongs to.
Hence the best-known ruling of the siman. הלכך תמרי׳ קודמים לענבים שזה שני לארץ בתרא וזה ג׳ לארץ קמא (שו״ע או״ח רי״א:ד) — and one must know that the honey of the verse means dates: דדבש שבקרא הוא תמרים שיוצא מהן דבש (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:כב). The Mishna Berura also sets a limit: וכתבו האחרונים דחשיבות מין שבעה להקדים ראשון לשני הוא רק כשנגמר הפרי (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:כ). summary: the date is second after the latter land, the grape third after the first — and this ranking holds only for fruit that has ripened.
But grapes made into wine change rank. ודוקא שאוכל ענבים כמות שהן אבל אם עשה מהן יין שקובע ברכה לעצמו בפה״ג חשובה והיא קודמת לברך עליו תחלה (רמ״א או״ח רי״א:ד), and the Mishna Berura measures how far: היינו אפילו לזיתים שהיא ראשונה לארץ בתרא (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:כג). summary: wine has a blessing to itself, and that dignity lifts it above even the olive.
And above wine, the grain dish. The Tur had put it thus: ומיהו מעשה קדרה דחטין ושעורין קודמין ליין לפי שברכתן במ״מ שהיא ג״כ חשובה שמבוררת וגם קודמים לו בפסוק (טור או״ח סימן רי״א). summary: borei minei mezonot is a specific wording too, and wheat precedes the vine in the verse — two reasons for a single rank.
The last sentence of the gloss, and the discussion of it. כל הנאמר סמוך לארץ קמא קודם למה שנאמר סמוך לארץ בתרא לאחר ששוה לו בסמיכה לארץ (רמ״א או״ח רי״א:ד); but the Mishna Berura reports the other reading: אבל הלבוש כתב דברכת במ״מ היא קודמת לכל וכן הסכימו הרבה אחרונים (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:כה). summary: for the gloss, wheat's precedence holds only at equal distance from land; for the Levush, followed by many, mezonot comes ahead of everything.

Seif 5: what we said, that wheat and barley come first, is only where he made of them a cooked dish or bread; but one who chews raw wheat, whose blessing is borei pri ha-adama, it does not come before the blessing borei pri ha-etz. Gloss: the blessing hamotzi comes before the blessing borei minei mezonot, and all the more so before the other blessings (Agur), and that even though the second item is weighty or dear to him (and so it is to be inferred from the words of the Hagahot Maimoniot chapter 9, from the Semak brought by the Tur, from the Kol Bo and from the Beit Yosef in the name of the Rambam). And all that we say, that one comes before another, is where he wants to eat of both — which is why the dear or the weighty one is to be given precedence; but if he does not want to eat of both, he blesses only over the one he wants to eat, even though the second too is lying before him (Terumat haDeshen siman 33). And all this, that he must give precedence, is only in the first instance; but if he transgressed and blessed over the second, if the blessings are the same he has fulfilled his duty and need not go back and bless over the one he should have given precedence to, provided his intention was on it too in his blessing (Beit Yosef siman 206, and in this siman in the name of the Rashba).
Wheat prevails only once it has been worked. הא דחטה ושעורה קודמין דוקא כשעשה מהם תבשיל או פת אבל הכוסס חטה שברכתו ב״פ האדמה אינה קודמת לברכת בפה״ע (שו״ע או״ח רי״א:ה); and then, says the Mishna Berura, והם קודמים לשארי מינים אף אם הם חביבים אצלו יותר (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:כו). summary: it is bread and the cooked dish that the verse has in view; a grain chewed as it is falls back to the ordinary rank of ha-adama.
On the chewed grain, two readings. The Mishna Berura reports that of the Gaon of Vilna: אכן בביאור הגר״א משמע דלפי מה שמבואר לעיל בס״א דהיכא שאין ברכותיהן שוות לא אזלינן כלל בתר מין שבעה ה״ה הכא לא אזלינן כלל בתר מוקדם ועל איזה שירצה יברך תחלה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:כז). summary: if, where the blessings differ, we already do not follow the seven species, no more shall we follow the order of the verse — and the choice becomes free again.
Bread rules everything. ברכת המוציא קודם לברכת במ״מ וכ״ש לשאר ברכות (רמ״א או״ח רי״א:ה), ואע״ג שהדבר השני חשוב או חביב עליו (רמ״א או״ח רי״א:ה); the Mishna Berura gives the concrete case: מצוה שיטול ידיו ויברך המוציא תחלה על הפת דברכת המוציא חשובה ואח״כ יברך במ״מ על הלחמניות (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:כח), and specifies what weighty means here: כגון שהלחם משעורים והמזונות מחטים (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:כט), while ר״ל שבאמת אינו חשוב יותר מהראשון אך בעיניו הוא חביב יותר (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:ל). summary: with bread before him he washes his hands and says hamotzi first — neither weight nor preference changes that.
This whole question exists only if he eats of both. וכל הא דאמרינן דאחד קודם לחבירו היינו שרוצה לאכול משניהם לכן יש להקדים החביב או החשוב (רמ״א או״ח רי״א:ה), אבל אם אינו רוצה לאכול משניהם אינו מברך רק על זה שרוצה לאכול אע״פ שגם השני מונח לפניו (רמ״א או״ח רי״א:ה); and the Mishna Berura adds: ואפילו רוצה לאכול משניהם אך שלא הביאו עדיין החביב לפניו א״צ להמתין (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:לא). summary: what he does not intend to eat does not enter the reckoning, even lying under his eyes — and he need not wait for the favourite dish that has not yet been served.
Finally: all of this is לכתחלה, not בדיעבד.

D. מעשה קדרה — the cooked dish and the full ladder

Seif 6: he had before him a cooked dish of spelt, oat and rye flour, and grape, fig and pomegranate — since he blesses borei minei mezonot over the cooked dish, its blessing comes first, even though those are of the seven species and this is not of the seven species. Nevertheless, since they are weighty, for bread is made of them, and one blesses hamotzi over them and Birkat haMazon comes first, even though he did not make them into bread.
The limiting case of the siman. היה לפניו תבשיל מקמח כוסמין ושבולת שועל ושיפון וגפן ותאנה ורימון כיון דמברך על התבשיל בורא מיני מזונות ברכתו קודמת (שו״ע או״ח רי״א:ו). summary: on one side three of the seven species, on the other a cooked dish that is not one of them — and the cooked dish goes first.
Why spelt, oats and rye do not count here as seven species. אע״ג דכוסמין מין חטין ושבולת שועל ושיפון מין שעורים מ״מ כיון דאין נזכרין בהדיא בקרא אין בהם חשיבות מין שבעה כ״כ כמו המפורשים בהדיא בקרא (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:לד). summary: they do belong to the genera of wheat and barley, but the verse does not name them — and it is explicit mention that confers the title.
And why they nevertheless prevail. אע״ג דהנך ממין ז׳ ואיהו לאו ממין שבעה מ״מ כיון דחשיבי דעבדי מנייהו פת ומברך עלייהו המוציא וברכת המזון קודמת אע״ג דלא עבדינהו פת (שו״ע או״ח רי״א:ו); the Mishna Berura adds: וגם הם בכלל חטה ושעורה דקרא עכ״פ (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:לה). summary: they are bread-grains, included in the wheat and barley of the verse — their dignity comes from their being fit to become bread.
The Mishna Berura closes the siman with a ladder. היו שניהם חביבין אזלינן בתר מין זיי״ן (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:לה) — and ends with a rule that reaches beyond the siman: ברכת אכילה ושתיה אפילו ברכת שהכל קודמת לברכת הריח (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:לה). summary: hamotzi; then mezonot of wheat, barley, spelt; then wine; then the fruits of the verse in their order; then ha-etz and ha-adama; then shehakol — and any blessing over food or drink precedes a blessing over fragrance.
The siman in one sentence: when several foods are before you, begin with the weightiest — and weight is measured first by the blessing itself (specific before general), then by the verse praising the land of Israel, then by the seven species, then by the taste of the one eating; all of this only if he intends to eat of both, and only לכתחלה.

Practical cases

Case 1 — An apple and dates in the same bowl

Situation: a fruit bowl holding an apple and dates. Both take בורא פרי העץ. I much prefer apples. Which do I bless?
Practice: since the blessings are the same, one will cover both, and the date is of the seven species — היו לפניו מיני פירות הרבה אם ברכותיהם שוות ויש ביניהם ממין שבעה מקדים מין שבעה אע״פ שאינו חביב כמו המין האחר (שו״ע או״ח רי״א:א), because דמעלת מין שבעה עדיף (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:ה). And the Mishna Berura notes that the blessing said over the date exempts the apple of itself: ואם היה מונח לפניו אתרוג וזית אף דאתרוג היה חביב עליו יותר קיי״ל לעיל בס״א דמברך על הזית שהוא ממין שבעה ונפטר ממילא אף בסתמא האתרוג ואם הוא בירך על האתרוג בסתמא לא נפטר הזית (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:לג). summary: bless over the date, eat some of it, then take the apple. For practice, follow your Rav.

Case 2 — A glass of juice and a bunch of grapes

Situation: before me a glass of juice (blessing שהכל נהיה בדברו) and a bunch of grapes (blessing בורא פרי העץ). It is the glass I am waiting for. Which comes first?
The Mishna Berura gives this very case: וע״כ כשמביאים לפניו יי״ש עם מרקחת יברך על המרקחת תחלה אף שהיי״ש חביב עליו יותר (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״א:טז). summary: the wording that names precisely comes before the one that covers everything, and preference does not change it. For practice, follow your Rav.

Case 3 — Two dishes on the table, but I want only one

Situation: a salad and a cake have been served. I intend to eat only the salad; the cake will stay where it is. Must I still keep an order?
And if one took them in the wrong order while eating of both: וכל זה דצריך להקדים היינו דוקא לכתחלה אבל אם עבר ובירך על השני אם הברכות שוות יוצא וא״צ לחזור ולברך על זה שהיה לו להקדים (רמ״א או״ח רי״א:ה), ובלבד שיהא דעתו גם כן עליו בברכתו (רמ״א או״ח רי״א:ה). summary: the siman orders only two foods one is going to eat both of; and even then, the order is a requirement of the first instance. For practice, follow your Rav.

Questions for review

Test your understanding:
  1. Why does the question of whether ברכותיהן שוות govern the whole of seif 1?
  2. What does חביב mean for the Mechaber, and what does the Rambam say about it in seif 2 (מ״ב רי״א:יג)?
  3. Why does בורא פרי העץ come before שהכל, and why does personal preference count for nothing here (seif 3)?
  4. How does the second ארץ of the verse send dates ahead of grapes (seif 4)?
  5. Wheat is named first in the verse: why does it nevertheless not always come first (seif 5)?
