The preceding simanim said which blessing to say, and over what. This one asks something quite different: when several people eat together, must each of them bless? A platter of fruit goes round; five people share it — does one blessing suffice? And if so, on what terms: must they be seated, must the one who blesses eat too, must the others answer amen? Hebrew text, English translation and an explanation of the ג׳ seifim, with a section of practical cases.
Subject: On what terms one blessing covers many — קביעות, ברכה ראשונה ואחרונה, and the conditions of listening

A blessing is not merely a text: it is an act, and one act can serve several people at once — provided those people form a single body. That is the whole business of seif 1: the Shulchan Aruch looks for the visible sign that turns a set of eaters into a table. For the Sages that sign was הסיבה, the reclining posture of the meal; for us it is simply ישיבה — sitting down together. Seif 2 adds a condition that flows from the very nature of these blessings, and seif 3 sets out what is required of the listener. We study here at the level of principle; for personal practice, one follows the ruling of one’s Rav.
📑 Plan of the study
A. קְבִיעוּת (seif 1) — what joins those who eat, and the limit of the ברכה אחרונה
B. הַמְבָרֵךְ צָרִיךְ לֶאֱכֹל עִמָּהֶם (seif 2) — why ברכות הנהנין are the exception
C. תְּנָאֵי הַשְּׁמִיעָה (seif 3) — beginning to end, and the two intentions
1-3. Practical cases and comprehension questions
A. קביעות — what joins those who eat
קְבִיעוּת — “settling in”. What allows one blessing to cover many is not physical closeness but the fact that the diners have settled together to eat. The Talmud gave the sign of its own day: הסבו, אחד מברך (ברכות מ״ג ע״א) — once they reclined, one blessed for all. The Mishna Berura translates that sign into our usage:
Seif 1: over all fruits and everything else, apart from bread and wine — if those eating were two or more, one covers his fellow even without hasseiba; still, they must at least be seated. For it is bread and wine alone that require hasseiba, and for us being seated is worth what hasseiba was worth for them. Accordingly, for us who have no hasseiba, there is no longer any difference between bread and wine and everything else: seated, even over bread and wine one blesses for all; and not seated, even over other things each blesses for himself. And what we said — that one blesses for all, over things other than bread — holds only for the blessing before; but for the blessing after, they must separate and each blesses for himself, since there is no zimmun over fruit. Gloss: and there are those who say that for everything apart from bread and wine hasseiba is of no avail — nor, for us, is sitting (Beit Yosef siman 174 in the name of the Raavad); and therefore the custom nowadays with fruit is that each blesses for himself.
The rule, and its minimum condition. «על כל פירות ושאר דברים חוץ מפת ויין אם היו האוכלים שנים או יותר אחד פוטר את חבירו אפי׳ בלא הסיבה» (שו״ע או״ח רי״ג:א) — but the Mechaber does not leave the door open: «ומיהו ישיבה מיהא בעי» (שו״ע או״ח רי״ג:א). summary: they must at the very least be seated together; standing, each is left with his own blessing.
Why bread and wine stood apart. «דדוקא בפת ויין דחשיבי היה דרכם לאכול בהסיבה על המטות וזה היה דרך קביעותם והתחברותם יחד לפיכך אין אחד מברך לכולם להוציאם עד שיסובו דאז מינכר דדעתם להתחבר ולהצטרף ביחד משא״כ בפירות» (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״ג:ד). summary: over costly fare the sign of the group was the reclining posture; over fruit no such thing was expected.
And why that difference has lapsed for us. «ר״ל לפי שאין דרכנו בהסיבה לפיכך מה שאנו מתועדין לישב יחד בשלחן אחד ולאכול נחשב לקביעות כמו הסיבה לדידהו ומהני אפילו בפת ויין» (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״ג:ו) — hence the conclusion of the seif: «דבישיבה אפילו פת ויין אחד מברך לכולם ושלא בישיבה בשאר דברים נמי כל אחד מברך לעצמו» (שו״ע או״ח רי״ג:א). summary: the table replaces the banqueting couch, and it holds for everything.
This is no second best. «ר״ל אפילו יודע כ״א בעצמו לברך אפ״ה אחד מברך ומוציא חבירו לכתחלה והוא שחבירו ישמע הברכה מתחלה ועד סוף ויכוין לצאת» (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״ג:ג), «והכי עדיף טפי דברוב עם הדרת מלך» (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״ג:ג). summary: even one who knows the blessing perfectly does better to be discharged by another — the King’s majesty shows in a multitude.
The boundary: before and after. «והא דאמרינן דאחד מברך לכולם בשאר דברים חוץ מן הפת ה״מ בברכה ראשונה» (שו״ע או״ח רי״ג:א); «אבל בברכה אחרונה צריכין ליחלק וכל אחד מברך לעצמו דאין זימון לפירות» (שו״ע או״ח רי״ג:א). The Mishna Berura gives the reason: «והטעם משום דברכה ראשונה כל אחד מרויח באותה ברכה שעי״כ מותרין לאכול וליהנות לפיכך מצטרפין לה אבל בברכה שלאחר אכילה שכבר אכלו ודעתם להפרד אין מצטרפין ואפילו ביין» (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״ג:ח). summary: before eating, all gain something by the blessing, and that joins them; afterwards they have finished and are already parting.
And why bread is the exception even at the end. «הא דהזכיר המחבר פת הכא משום דבפת קי״ל דאם הם שלשה מזמנין ומוציא אחד את חבירו בברהמ״ז משא״כ בשארי דברים בברכה אחרונה אפי׳ בשלשה אינו מוציא» (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״ג:ז). summary: over bread there is zimmun, which still gathers the diners after the meal; over fruit there is nothing of the kind.
The gloss, and the custom. «וי״א דבכל הדברים חוץ מפת ויין לא מהני הסיבה וה״ה ישיבה לדידן» (רמ״א או״ח רי״ג:א); «ולכן נהגו עכשיו בפירות שכ״א מברך לעצמו» (רמ״א או״ח רי״ג:א). The Mishna Berura describes what became of it: «וכמדומה שכעת המנהג פשוט ברוב המקומות שאין מוציאין אחד את חבירו כמעט בשום דבר מאכל אף שהוא נגד הדין ואפשר משום שאין הכל בקיאין להתכוין לצאת ולהוציא» (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״ג:יב). summary: the custom drifted from the strict law, perhaps because few people know how to form the required intentions.
Seif 2: the one who blesses does not cover the others unless he eats and drinks with them; and then they are discharged by their listening, when they direct themselves toward him — even if they do not answer amen.
A condition no other blessing carries. «אין המברך מוציא אחרים אא״כ יאכל וישתה עמהם» (שו״ע או״ח רי״ג:ב); and then «ואז יוצאים בשמיעתן שמכוונין אליו אפי׳ לא יענו אמן» (שו״ע או״ח רי״ג:ב). summary: knowing the blessing is not enough — he must himself be enjoying the food.
The reason lies in the kind of blessing. «בברכת הנהנין דדוקא בברכת המצות שכל ישראל ערבין זה בזה וכשחבירו אינו יוצא ידי המצוה כאלו הוא לא יצא לכן יכול לברך אפילו מי שאינו חייב בברכה זו» (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״ג:יד) — «משא״כ בברכת הנהנין שאינו חוב המוטל עליו כשאר מצות דלא ליתהני ולא לבריך ואפילו אם אינם יודעים בעצמן לברך» (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״ג:יד). summary: in blessings over mitzvot all Israel stand surety for one another, so one may bless for another without being bound oneself; a blessing of enjoyment falls only on the one who enjoys — let him abstain, and he owes nothing.
And if the reciter does not taste? «ואם אינו אוכל ושותה עמהם אף בדיעבד לא יצאו דהא ברכתו הוי לבטלה כיון שאינו אוכל בעצמו ואיך יצאו על ידו ואפילו ענו אמן על הברכה» (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״ג:טו). summary: his blessing would be said in vain, and a blessing said in vain covers nobody. Where the failure was involuntary, it is otherwise: «אם לא שמה שלא אכל ושתה המברך היה בשוגג או באונס כגון שנשפך הכוס אחר הברכה וכה״ג דבעת הברכה לא היה לבטלה אז יוצאין אחרים על ידו» (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״ג:טו).
The scope of the rule. «וזה הסעיף שייך בין לברכה ראשונה ובין לברכה אחרונה» (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״ג:יד). The beraita from which all this flows is in Rosh Hashanah: «כל הברכות כולן, אף על פי שיצא — מוציא. חוץ מברכת הלחם וברכת היין, שאם לא יצא — מוציא, ואם יצא — אינו מוציא» (ראש השנה כ״ט ע״א). summary: over bread and wine — that is, in the blessings of enjoyment — one who has already been discharged discharges nobody. That is where the siman takes its name.
C. תנאי השמיעה — מתחלתה ועד סופה and the two intentions
Seif 3: one does not discharge his obligation by hearing the blessing, even if he answers amen, unless he heard it from beginning to end, intended thereby to discharge his obligation, and the one who blessed likewise intended to discharge him.
Hearing the whole blessing. «אין יוצא ידי חובתו בשמיעת הברכה אפי׳ יענה אמן אא״כ שמעה מתחלתה ועד סופה» (שו״ע או״ח רי״ג:ג). And “from beginning to end” is meant literally: «והיינו גם תיבת ברוך שבתחלתה דלא עדיף ממברך בעצמו כשמדלג איזה תיבה מעיקר הברכה דלא יצא ידי חובתו דהוי משנה ממטבע שטבעו חכמים» (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״ג:יט). summary: to miss a word is as if he had dropped it himself, and a truncated blessing is no longer the formula the Sages fixed.
The two intentions. «ונתכוין לצאת בה ידי חובתו והמברך נתכוין ג״כ להוציאו ידי חובתו» (שו״ע או״ח רי״ג:ג). The Mishna Berura had already noted the reciter’s side in the previous seif: «והוא ג״כ יכוין להוציאם» (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״ג:טז). summary: two wills must meet; being within earshot is not enough.
And this holds even for rabbinic blessings. «מדסתם משמע דאכל ברכות קאי ואפי׳ ברכות שהם דרבנן בעינן דוקא שיכוין לצאת ידי המצוה» (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״ג:יח). summary: one might have thought intent required only where the obligation is biblical; the Shulchan Aruch speaks without distinguishing.
Amen is not the condition — yet it is said. «דקי״ל דשומע כעונה והרי הוא כמברך בעצמו» (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״ג:יז). And even so: «עוד יותר יש חיוב לכתחלה לענות אמן בברכה שמתכוין לצאת בה כדי להורות בפועל שמסכים לברכת המברך» (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״ג:יז). summary: what discharges is the listening; amen shows outwardly that one subscribes to what was just said.
The siman in one sentence: a blessing can serve a whole table, provided the table really is one — ישיבה מיהא בעי; that joining ends with the meal, since there is no zimmun over fruit; the one who blesses must eat with them, because a blessing of enjoyment cannot be lent; and the listener is discharged only if he heard it all, wanted to be discharged, and was meant to be.
Practical cases
Case 1 — A platter of fruit for five
Situation: we are seated around a table and a platter of fruit is brought. Must each of us say בורא פרי העץ, or may one bless for all?
Practice: by the letter of the Mechaber, one blesses for all — «על כל פירות ושאר דברים חוץ מפת ויין אם היו האוכלים שנים או יותר אחד פוטר את חבירו אפי׳ בלא הסיבה» (שו״ע או״ח רי״ג:א) —, on condition that «ומיהו ישיבה מיהא בעי» (שו״ע או״ח רי״ג:א), that is «דאין אחד יכול להוציא חבירו בהברכה אלא א״כ ישבו לאכול ולשתות ביחד ולא במעומד דקביעות קצת עכ״פ מיהו בעי» (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״ג:ה). But the gloss records the contrary usage: «ולכן נהגו עכשיו בפירות שכ״א מברך לעצמו» (רמ״א או״ח רי״ג:א). summary: both practices have solid ground; one follows one’s Rav and the custom of one’s place. For practice, follow your Rav.
Case 2 — The one who blesses is not eating
Situation: one of the company knows the blessings well but takes nothing from the platter. May he say the blessing for the others?
The reason: «משא״כ בברכת הנהנין שאינו חוב המוטל עליו כשאר מצות דלא ליתהני ולא לבריך ואפילו אם אינם יודעים בעצמן לברך» (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רי״ג:יד). summary: in blessings of enjoyment there is no mutual surety; one who does not enjoy has nothing with which to discharge others. For practice, follow your Rav.
Case 3 — I was distracted and missed the opening
Situation: someone blessed for the table; I only heard from מלך העולם onward, but I answered amen. Am I discharged?
Both intentions are needed besides: «ונתכוין לצאת בה ידי חובתו והמברך נתכוין ג״כ להוציאו ידי חובתו» (שו״ע או״ח רי״ג:ג). summary: amen does not stand in for listening; it goes with it. For practice, follow your Rav.
