1. The Central Axiom

Universal principle of Siman ה׳:

A blessing is not a formula recited out of habit: it is a word addressed to a present Master. Thus the Mechaber opens with יְכַוֵּן בַּבְּרָכוֹת פֵּרוּשׁ הַמִּלּוֹתin the blessings, intend the meaning of the words one pronounces. And when the speech touches the divine Names, the kavana sharpens: at the הוי״ה, to intend its reading אדנותאדון הכל, Master of all — and its writing in yod-hé — היה הוה ויהיה, He was, is, and will be; at the אלהים, to intend that He is תקיף בעל הכחות, the Mighty One, Master of all the forces. The single seif of this siman thus unfolds a ladder of kavana: from the meaning of the words up to the awareness of Whom one blesses.
💡 The universal key: to bless is to stand before Hashem knowing to Whom one speaks. יכוין בברכות פירוש המלות.
  • The meaning of the words → intend what one pronounces
  • The Name הוי״האדון הכל (reading) + היה הוה ויהיה (writing)

⚖ The structure of the seif at a glance

The single seif of the Mechaber holds in a three-rung ladder: (1) the meaning of the words — the base kavana, in every blessing פירוש המלות; (2) the Name הוי״ה — a double intention: its reading אדון הכל and its writing היה הוה ויהיה; (3) the Name אלהיםתקיף בעל הכחות, the Mighty One, Master of all forces. The Shulchan Aruch HaRav (the Alter Rebbe) unfolds this same seif into 3 seifim: adding the conduct when the Name is written א-ד (intention "אדון הכל" only) and the דקדוק of the vocalization of the aleph (חטף פתח / שבא).

📚 The yesod of the siman: the entire kavana rises by degrees. First the words (to understand what one says); then the Names, where one no longer stops at the literal sense but at what the Name reveals of Hashem: הוי״ה, the Master above time (transcendence, אדון הכל + היה הוה ויהיה), and אלהים, the Master of all the forces (the power deployed in the world, בעל הכחות). To bless thus becomes an act of knowledge — דעת — and of service of the heart.

4. The Name הוי״ה — reading and writing

Q: What must one bear in mind when saying the Name הוי״ה?
🟢 The reading (אדנות) — One reads אד-ני: intend אדון הכל, that He is the Master of all (Kingship, malchut).
🟢 The writing (יו״ד ה״א) — The Name is written in yod-hé: intend היה הוה ויהיה, He was, is, and will be (eternity, above time).
🟢 Both together — The kavana of the הוי״ה unites reading and writing: the present Master and the Being above time.
🔴 Do not pronounce the Name as it is written — One always reads אד-ני; the writing is only an object of thought.

Why two intentions?

The Name הוי״ה carries a double treasure. As it is read (אד-ני), it speaks of Kingship: Hashem is אדון הכל, the Master of all, to Whom everything belongs — this is the near aspect, the one before Whom I stand. As it is written (yod-hé), it speaks of eternity: היה הוה ויהיה, He who was, is, and will be, above time — this is the transcendent aspect. The blessing unites the two: I address the present Master who is also the eternal Being. For the deepening of this relation (transcendence / immanence, הוי״ה and אלהים), the path of the שער היחוד והאמונה of the Tanya illuminates the principle — one will study it with a Chabad Rav.

5. The Name אלהים — בעל הכחות

Q: What must one bear in mind when saying the Name אלהים?
🟢 תקיף — Intend that He is the Mighty, the Strong (the Mechaber: תקיף; the SA HaRav adds ואמיץ).
🟢 בעל הכחות — Master of the capacity (בעל היכולת) and of all the forces (בעל הכחות כולם).
🟢 בעליונים ובתחתונים — The SA HaRav specifies: to Whom belongs the capacity in the upper and lower worlds.

הוי״ה and אלהים — the principle

Where הוי״ה speaks of the Being above time (transcendence), אלהים speaks of the power deployed in the world, בעל הכחות — all the forces of creation have their source in Him. Jewish thought teaches that these two Names are not two powers, but a single unity: the יחוד of הוי״ה and אלהים. This is precisely the subject of the שער היחוד והאמונה of the Tanya, to be studied in principle with a Chabad Rav. For the practical kavana of this siman, it suffices to retain: at אלהים, intend that He is תקיף בעל הכחות כולם.

6. The kavana of the meaning — מעכבת or למצוה

#CaseConductMarker
The meaning of the words, everywhere Ideally, to have the kavana of the meaning in every blessing. The seif · פירוש המלות
The 1st berakha / the 1st verse The kavana is more demanding where it is מעכב (1st berakha of the Amida, 1st verse of the Shema) — see simanim 60–63, 101. See simanim 60, 61, 101
One missed the kavana Depending on the case (and whether the kavana was מעכב or not) — for the practical conduct, study Level 4 and consult the Rav. Level 4 · the Rav
The kavana of the Names The intention of the Names (הוי״ה, אלהים) belongs to the ideal of service — to aim for it, without turning it into a scrupulous obstacle. The seif
📚 The overall logic: the kavana of the meaning of the words is the goal of every blessing. Apart from that, certain places make it מעכב (the 1st berakha, the 1st verse of the Shema — simanim 60–63, 101). For the case where one pronounced a blessing without kavana, one distinguishes according to the place: one studies Level 4 and consults the Rav for the practical conduct.

7. Golden rules — Memory Aid

The 5 golden rules of Siman ה׳
  • The meaning of the wordsפירוש המלות: to understand what one pronounces.
  • הוי״ה readingאדון הכל: Master of all (Kingship).
  • הוי״ה writingהיה הוה ויהיה: He was, is, and will be (eternity).
  • אלהיםתקיף בעל הכחות: the Mighty One, Master of all forces.
  • Aim, without blocking — the kavana is the ideal everywhere, מעכב in certain places (simanim 60, 101) → the Rav.

8. Mnemonic — Memory Aid

Acrostic: M-R-W-P — the 4 aims of the kavana
  • Meaning — of what one pronounces (פירוש המלות).
  • Reading of the הוי״ה — אדון הכל, Master of all.
  • Writing of the הוי״ה — היה הוה ויהיה, above time.
  • Power (אלהים) — תקיף בעל הכחות, Master of all forces.
3 foundational principles to memorize:
  • פירוש המלות — the kavana of the meaning of the words, in every blessing
  • אדון הכל + היה הוה ויהיה — the double intention of the Name הוי״ה
  • בעל הכחות — the intention of the Name אלהים, the Mighty One

9. Pitfalls to Avoid

❌ Pitfall 1: Reciting the blessings mechanically, without thinking of the meaning.
→ The seif: יכוין בברכות פירוש המלות — the kavana of the meaning of the words is the very heart of the blessing.
❌ Pitfall 2: Believing there is a single intention for the Name הוי״ה.
→ The seif: two intentions — the reading אדון הכל and the writing היה הוה ויהיה.
❌ Pitfall 3: Confusing the kavana of the Name הוי״ה with that of the Name אלהים.
הוי״ה = above time (היה הוה ויהיה, אדון הכל); אלהים = תקיף בעל הכחות, the Master of all forces.
❌ Pitfall 4: Wanting to pronounce the Name as it is written.
→ One always reads אד-ני; the writing in yod-hé is only an object of thought, never of pronunciation.
❌ Pitfall 5: Turning the kavana into a scrupulous block that paralyzes prayer.
→ The kavana is the ideal everywhere, מעכב in certain places only (1st berakha, 1st verse of the Shema — simanim 60, 101). For the case where one missed the kavana, consult the Rav.
