Our Sages taught that the place of prayer is no small matter. One does not pray on a height, שנאמר «ממעמקים קראתיך ה׳» — « from the depths I called You », for there is no « height » before the Creator; and one seeks to pray בבית הכנסת עם הציבור, for « ברב עם הדרת מלך ». The siman deals with the מקום הראוי (fitting place) and the תפילה עם הציבור. We study here at the level of principle; for personal conduct, one refers to the custom and to the ruling of the Rav.

📑 Study outline

1. Practical case — praying on a high place: לא יעמוד, except a זקן, a חולה or the שליח ציבור
2. Practical case — orienting כנגד ירושלים and avoiding the מקום פרוץ
3. Practical case — praying עם הציבור and the traveler who seeks a מנין

A. The place of prayer and the synagogue — the main themes

מָקוֹם הָרָאוּי לְהִתְפַּלֵּל — the place fitting for prayer — two requirements meet: the physical place of the one praying (neither on a height, nor in the open, but in a modest, enclosed place, turned כנגד ירושלים); and the communal framework — striving to pray בבית הכנסת עם הציבור, for « ברב עם הדרת מלך » and a person's prayer is fully accepted only in the synagogue. Hence the מקום קבוע, the merit of the מנין, and the law of the ההולך בדרך.

Séif 1 — לא יעמוד במקום גבוה: not praying on a height

Séif 1: one who prays should not stand on a bed, nor on a chair, nor on a bench — even if they are not three טפחים tall — nor on a high place (מקום גבוה), except if he is old (זקן) or sick (חולה), or if his intent is to make the congregation hear him (the שליח ציבור).
One prays below, not on a height, שנאמר «ממעמקים קראתיך ה׳» — for there is no « height » before the Creator, and prayer rises from a humble heart. Exceptions: the זקן or the חולה for whom descending is hard, and the שליח ציבור who must be heard — for him the height serves the congregation, not pride.

Séifim 5-6 — לא פרוץ ולא חורבה: an enclosed, modest place

Séifim 5-6: one should not pray in an open place (מקום פרוץ) like in a field, because when one is in a private place (מקום צניעות) the awe of the King (אימת מלך) falls upon him and his heart breaks; and one should not pray in a ruin (חורבה), because of suspicion (חשד), because of collapse (מפולת) and because of harmful spirits (מזיקים).
A modest, enclosed place helps כוונה: hidden from view, one feels the אימת מלך and the heart submits. But the חורבה is set aside for three reasons — חשד (lest one be suspected of entering for another purpose), מפולת (the danger of collapse), and מזיקים.

Séif 4 — כנגד ירושלים: orienting through the openings

Séif 4: one should open doorways or windows (פתחים או חלונות) facing Jerusalem, so as to pray toward them; and it is good that the synagogue have twelve windows (י״ב חלונות).
Prayer is oriented כנגד ירושלים — and toward the place of the מקדש. The פתחים וחלונות facing Jerusalem help direct the heart heavenward. It is good to have י״ב חלונות in the synagogue. This is the « communal » side of the principle: the whole place of prayer faces Jerusalem.

Séifim 9, 11 — בבית הכנסת עם הציבור: with the congregation

Séifim 9, 11: a person should strive to pray in the synagogue with the congregation (בבית הכנסת עם הציבור); and one who has a synagogue in his city and does not enter it to pray is called a « bad neighbor » (שכן רע) and causes exile for himself and his children.
The תפילה בציבור is the summit: « ברב עם הדרת מלך », and a person's prayer is אין נשמעת אלא בבית הכנסת. Conversely, one who has a synagogue yet neglects to enter is named שכן רע — a « bad neighbor » — to the point that it גורם גלות. This shows the gravity of forsaking the מנין when one can attend.

Séifim 14, 16, 19 — מקום קבוע, rising early and the ההולך בדרך

Séifim 14, 16, 19: one should rise early for the synagogue so as to be counted among the first ten (הי׳ הראשונים); one should fix a place (מקום קבוע) for one's prayer and not change it without need; and the traveler (ההולך בדרך) who reaches a city — if within four מילין ahead of him there is a place where they pray with ten, he must go there, and behind him he must return up to one מיל in order to pray with ten.
Three marks of attachment to the tzibbur: rising early (arriving early to count among the עשרה ראשונים), a מקום קבוע for prayer, and the effort of the ההולך בדרך — up to ד׳ מילין ahead and מיל behind to pray בעשרה. Praying with the מנין is worth turning aside from one's road.
The siman in one sentence: one prays in a fitting place — neither on a height (לא יעמוד במקום גבוה, except a זקן, חולה, שליח ציבור), nor in the open (לא פרוץ ולא חורבה), turned כנגד ירושלים; and one strives to pray בבית הכנסת עם הציבור, with a מקום קבוע, rising early for the מנין — the traveler himself turning aside up to ד׳ מילין to pray בעשרה.

Practical cases

Case 1 — Praying on a high place

Situation: may one pray standing on a chair, a bench or a raised platform?
One prays at ground level, in humility. Exceptions: the זקן or the חולה for whom descending is hard, and the שליח ציבור who must be heard. For the practical application (the synagogue platform, etc.), one follows one's Rav.

Case 2 — Orienting and avoiding the open place

Situation: one prays at home or while traveling — where to stand and which way to turn?
Conduct: one seeks an enclosed, modest place, not במקום פרוץ like in a field (privacy gives rise to the אימת מלך), and one opens פתחים או חלונות כנגד ירושלים to pray toward them. For the exact details of orientation, one follows one's Rav.

Case 3 — Praying with the tzibbur and the traveler

Situation: there is a synagogue in town, or one is traveling near a מנין — what is the duty?
Conduct: one strives to pray בבית הכנסת עם הציבור; one who has a synagogue and does not enter is a שכן רע. The ההולך בדרך turns aside up to ד׳ מילין ahead of him (and מיל behind) to pray בעשרה. For borderline cases (fatigue, safety, times), one follows one's Rav.

Comprehension questions

Check your understanding:
  1. Why does one not pray במקום גבוה, and which verse teaches it (séif 1)?
  2. Who is the exception to this rule, and why (séif 1)?
  3. Why avoid the מקום פרוץ and the חורבה (séifim 5-6)?
  4. In which direction does one open the פתחים וחלונות, and how many windows for the synagogue (séif 4)?
  5. What does it mean to be a שכן רע, and how far does the ההולך בדרך turn aside for a מנין (séifim 11, 16)?
