✦ ❖ ✦

This siman teaches the place fitting for prayer and the importance of praying עם הציבור: not standing במקום גבוה (on a bed, a chair, a bench), except a זקן, a חולה or the שליח ציבור; not praying במקום פרוץ like in a field, nor בחורבה; opening פתחים וחלונות כנגד ירושלים; striving to pray בבית הכנסת עם הציבור and fixing a מקום קבוע there; and the law of the ההולך בדרך. Hebrew text, fluent English translation and explanation of the main themes, with a section of practical cases.

Our Sages taught that the place of prayer is no small matter. One does not pray on a height, שנאמר «ממעמקים קראתיך ה׳» — « from the depths I called You », for there is no « height » before the Creator; and one seeks to pray בבית הכנסת עם הציבור, for « ברב עם הדרת מלך ». The siman deals with the מקום הראוי (fitting place) and the תפילה עם הציבור. We study here at the level of principle; for personal conduct, one refers to the custom and to the ruling of the Rav.

+ Comprehension questions and going further

A. The place of prayer and the synagogue — the main themes

מָקוֹם הָרָאוּי לְהִתְפַּלֵּל — the place fitting for prayer — two requirements meet: the physical place of the one praying (neither on a height, nor in the open, but in a modest, enclosed place, turned כנגד ירושלים); and the communal framework — striving to pray בבית הכנסת עם הציבור, for « ברב עם הדרת מלך » and a person's prayer is fully accepted only in the synagogue. Hence the מקום קבוע, the merit of the מנין, and the law of the ההולך בדרך.

Séif 1 — לא יעמוד במקום גבוה: not praying on a height

Séif 1: one who prays should not stand on a bed, nor on a chair, nor on a bench [gloss (Rama): and even if they are not three טפחים tall — Beit Yosef in the name of the מהרי״א], nor on a high place (מקום גבוה), except if he is old (זקן) or sick (חולה), or if his intent is to make the congregation hear him (the שליח ציבור).
One prays below, not on a height, שנאמר «ממעמקים קראתיך ה׳» — for there is no « height » before the Creator, and prayer rises from a humble heart. Exceptions: the זקן or the חולה for whom descending is hard, and the שליח ציבור who must be heard — for him the height serves the congregation, not pride.

Séifim 2-3 — שיעור מקום גבוה: the measure of a high place; craftsmen at the top of a tree

Séif 2: the measure of the « high place » that was spoken of is three טפחים. If it was three high and had four amot by four amot, it is like an upper storey (עלייה) and one may pray on it; likewise, if it was surrounded by partitions (מחיצות), even though it is not four by four, one may pray on it, for its height is not noticeable, since it forms a separate domain (שחלק רשות). Séif 3: craftsmen doing work for the householder may pray at the top of an olive tree or at the top of a fig tree, and this does not fall under « one should not stand on a high place and pray »: since they went up to do their work, it is as though one went up to an upper storey. But in other trees they must come down. The reason the olive differs from other trees is that they have many more branches than other trees, and there is great effort in climbing them and coming down, and they would lose working time; therefore it was said that he prays there. But in other trees, where there is no loss, they come down. And the householder, even from the top of the olive or the fig tree, must come down to pray, for he is not bound to the work, being his own master; and if leniency was granted to the workers because of the loss of work, it was not granted to the householder.

Séif 4 — כנגד ירושלים: orienting through the openings

Séif 4: one should open doorways or windows (פתחים או חלונות) facing Jerusalem, so as to pray toward them; and it is good that the synagogue have twelve windows (י״ב חלונות).
Prayer is oriented כנגד ירושלים — and toward the place of the מקדש. The פתחים וחלונות facing Jerusalem help direct the heart heavenward. It is good to have י״ב חלונות in the synagogue. This is the « communal » side of the principle: the whole place of prayer faces Jerusalem.

Séifim 5-6 — לא פרוץ ולא חורבה: an enclosed, modest place

Séifim 5-6: one should not pray in an open place (מקום פרוץ) like in a field, because when one is in a private place (מקום צניעות) the awe of the King (אימת מלך) falls upon him and his heart breaks; and one should not pray in a ruin (חורבה), because of suspicion (חשד), because of collapse (מפולת) and because of harmful spirits (מזיקים).
A modest, enclosed place helps כוונה: hidden from view, one feels the אימת מלך and the heart submits. But the חורבה is set aside for three reasons — חשד (lest one be suspected of entering for another purpose), מפולת (the danger of collapse), and מזיקים.

Séifim 7-8 — אחורי בית הכנסת: behind the synagogue; passing its door

Séif 7: nor [should one pray] behind the synagogue, if he does not turn his face toward the synagogue. « Behind the synagogue » is the side in which the door opens, which is the opposite of the side toward which the congregation faces when praying; and some explain the reverse, and it is proper to take both views into account. And also when one prays on the other sides, outside the synagogue, one should be strict to turn his face toward the synagogue. All this is when it is noticeable that he turns his back to the synagogue; but if he prays in a house adjoining the synagogue, his face toward ארץ ישראל as is proper and his back to the wall of his house, which is the wall of the synagogue, it is permitted, for it is not noticeable that he turns his face away from the synagogue. Séif 8: it is forbidden to pass outside the synagogue, on the side where the door opens, at the time the congregation is praying, because he appears like a denier (ככופר), since he does not go in to pray. But if he is carrying a load, or is wearing תפילין, or there is another synagogue in the town, or this synagogue has another door [gloss (Rama): or he is riding an animal], it is permitted [Beit Yosef in the name of רי״ו].

Séifim 9-11 — בבית הכנסת עם הציבור: with the congregation

Séif 9: a person should strive to pray in the synagogue with the congregation (בבית הכנסת עם הציבור); and if he is prevented (אנוס) and cannot come to the synagogue, he should aim to pray at the time the congregation prays [gloss (Rama): the same applies to people living in settlements (ישובים) who have no מנין — they should nevertheless pray שחרית and ערבית at the time the congregation prays — Semag]; and likewise, if he was prevented and did not pray at the time the congregation prayed, and he prays alone, he should nevertheless pray in the synagogue. Séif 10: when he stands with the congregation, he is forbidden to put his prayer before the congregation's prayer, unless the time [for prayer] is passing and the congregation is not praying, because they prolong the פיוטים or for another reason. Gloss (Rama): but if the time is not passing, he should say the פיוטים and the supplications (תחינות) with the congregation and not separate himself from the congregation, even to engage in words of Torah; and see above, siman 68. Séif 11: one who has a synagogue in his city and does not enter it to pray is called a « bad neighbor » (שכן רע) and causes exile for himself and his children.
The תפילה בציבור is the summit: « ברב עם הדרת מלך », and a person's prayer is אין נשמעת אלא בבית הכנסת. Conversely, one who has a synagogue yet neglects to enter is named שכן רע — a « bad neighbor » — to the point that it גורם גלות. This shows the gravity of forsaking the מנין when one can attend.

Séifim 12-13 — מצוה לרוץ: running to the synagogue; spitting in the synagogue

Séif 12: it is a mitzva to run when going to the synagogue, and likewise for any matter of mitzva — even on Shabbat, when it is forbidden to take long strides (פסיעה גסה); but when leaving the synagogue it is forbidden to run. Séif 13: it is permitted to spit in the synagogue, and one rubs it with one's foot or covers it with reeds (גמי).

Séifim 14-19 — מקום קבוע, rising early and the ההולך בדרך

Séif 14: one should rise early for the synagogue so as to be counted among the first ten (הי׳ הראשונים). Séif 15: if a person is left alone praying in a synagogue in the fields, or even in a synagogue in town if it is the ערבית prayer [gloss (Rama): which is prayed at night], his fellow must wait for him until he finishes his prayer, so that he not be confused in his prayer [gloss (Rama): and some are stringent even by day, and in our synagogues which are in town — Tur and Mordekhai in the name of ר״י and הר״י, first chapter of Berakhot]; and if he lengthens with requests and supplications, [his fellow] need not wait for him. Séif 16: the traveler (ההולך בדרך) who reaches a city and wishes to lodge there — if within four מילין ahead of him there is a place where they pray with ten, he must go there, and behind him he must return up to one מיל in order to pray with ten. Séif 17: some say that all the more so one should not rise early to leave a city where they pray with ten, if he can reach his destination while the day is still long and will not have to travel alone after the prayer. Séif 18: a fixed בית המדרש is holier than a synagogue, and it is a mitzva to pray in it more than in a synagogue — provided he prays there with ten. Gloss (Rama): some say that even without ten it is preferable to pray in the בית המדרש fixed for him — but only one whose Torah is his occupation (תורתו אומנתו) and who does not otherwise interrupt [his study] (ואינו מתבטל בלאו הכי) [תר״י, first chapter of Berakhot]; and even so, he should not make a habit of it, lest the unlearned (עמי הארץ) learn from him and neglect the synagogue [Responsa of the Rosh, kelal 4, and the Tur]; and all the more so, he should not study Torah in the synagogue at the time the congregation is saying סליחות and supplications [Hagahot Alfasi hahadashim]. Séif 19: one should fix a place (מקום קבוע) for one's prayer and not change it without need; and it is not enough to fix a synagogue for oneself to pray in: even in the synagogue where he is fixed, he must have a fixed place.
Three marks of attachment to the tzibbur: rising early (arriving early to count among the עשרה ראשונים), a מקום קבוע for prayer, and the effort of the ההולך בדרך — up to ד׳ מילין ahead and מיל behind to pray בעשרה. Praying with the מנין is worth turning aside from one's road.

Séifim 20-22 — שיעור שני פתחים and חציצה: entering the synagogue; nothing between oneself and the wall

Séif 20: one enters the measure of two doorways (שיעור שני פתחים), and then prays. Some explain: the measure of two doorways, that is, eight טפחים; he should go inside so as not to sit by the door, for it would look as if staying in the synagogue were a burden to him (כמשאו); and according to this, if he has a designated place by the door, it does not matter. And some explain that the reason is that he looks outside and cannot concentrate; and according to this, if [the door] does not open onto the public domain, it does not matter. And some explain that he should not hurry to pray as soon as he enters, but should wait the time of [passing] two doorways; and it is proper to take all the explanations into account. Séif 21: there must be nothing interposing (חוצץ) between him and the wall; and a fixed object, such as a cabinet (ארון) or a platform (תיבה), does not interpose [gloss (Rama): and only a large object, ten high and four wide, counts as an interposition, but a small object is not considered a separation — Abudarham and Orhot Hayyim in the name of the Raavad]; and likewise living beings do not interpose — even a person does not interpose. Gloss (Rama): it seems to me that living beings do interpose and a person does not, and so appears to be the reasoning of the פוסקים; and perhaps an error has crept into the books. Séif 22: and some say that one should take care not to pray behind any person at all, and it is good to take his view into account.

Séifim 23-25 — בגדים מצויירים and רבו: images facing one; one's place relative to one's teacher

Séif 23: garments decorated with images — even if [the images] are not raised — it is not proper to pray facing them; and if he happens to pray facing a garment or a wall decorated with images, he should veil his eyes (יעלים עיניו). Gloss (Rama): therefore it is also forbidden to draw images in books in which one prays, so that concentration (כוונה) is not nullified [Mordekhai, beginning of the chapter Kol hatselamim]; but garments on which indecent things (דברי תפלות) are depicted — even to sit on them in the synagogue is forbidden [Responsa of the Rosh, siman 2, kelal 5]. Séif 24: one should not pray beside one's teacher (רבו), nor behind one's teacher, nor in front of him [gloss (Rama): some say that all this refers only to praying individually, but in a congregation, if that is the order of his seating, there is no concern whether he prays in front of him or behind him — Beit Yosef in the name of the מהרי״א and the Ohel Moed; and although it is good to be stringent, the custom is to be lenient]; if he has moved four amot away, it is permitted. [Gloss (Rama): and see Yoreh De'ah, siman 242, séif 16.] Séif 25: a disciple-colleague (תלמיד חבר) may pray behind his teacher.

Séifim 26-27 — מקום שאין קורין בו ק״ש: a clean place for prayer

Séif 26: any place where one does not read קריאת שמע, one does not pray there; and just as one distances oneself from excrement, urine, a bad smell, a corpse and the sight of nakedness (ערוה) for קריאת שמע, so one distances oneself for prayer. Séif 27: if he was standing in prayer and a small child urinated in the synagogue, he should be silent until water is brought to pour over the urine, or walk four amot ahead, or to his sides, or leave the synagogue, and finish his prayer. Gloss (Rama): it is better to go to another place rather than be silent, lest he pause long enough to finish all of it and have to return to the beginning [Beit Yosef in the name of the Rokeah, siman 224; and see above, siman 79].
The siman in one sentence: one prays in a fitting place — neither on a height (לא יעמוד במקום גבוה, except a זקן, חולה, שליח ציבור), nor in the open (לא פרוץ ולא חורבה), turned כנגד ירושלים; and one strives to pray בבית הכנסת עם הציבור, with a מקום קבוע, rising early for the מנין — the traveler himself turning aside up to ד׳ מילין to pray בעשרה.

Practical cases

Case 1 — Praying on a high place

Situation: may one pray standing on a chair, a bench or a raised platform?
One prays at ground level, in humility. Exceptions: the זקן or the חולה for whom descending is hard, and the שליח ציבור who must be heard. For the practical application (the synagogue platform, etc.), one follows one's Rav.

Case 2 — Orienting and avoiding the open place

Situation: one prays at home or while traveling — where to stand and which way to turn?
Conduct: one seeks an enclosed, modest place, not במקום פרוץ like in a field (privacy gives rise to the אימת מלך), and one opens פתחים או חלונות כנגד ירושלים to pray toward them. For the exact details of orientation, one follows one's Rav.

Case 3 — Praying with the tzibbur and the traveler

Situation: there is a synagogue in town, or one is traveling near a מנין — what is the duty?
Conduct: one strives to pray בבית הכנסת עם הציבור; one who has a synagogue and does not enter is a שכן רע. The ההולך בדרך turns aside up to ד׳ מילין ahead of him (and מיל behind) to pray בעשרה. For borderline cases (fatigue, safety, times), one follows one's Rav.

Comprehension questions

Check your understanding:
  1. Why does one not pray במקום גבוה, and which verse teaches it (séif 1)?
  2. Who is the exception to this rule, and why (séif 1)?
  3. In which direction does one open the פתחים וחלונות, and how many windows for the synagogue (séif 4)?
  4. Why avoid the מקום פרוץ and the חורבה (séifim 5-6)?
  5. What does it mean to be a שכן רע, and how far does the ההולך בדרך turn aside for a מנין (séifim 11, 16)?
