1. The central axiom
Siman רע"ה in one sentence.
No solitary reading by Shabbat lamplight — שֶׁמָּא יַטֶּה (fear of tilting the wick to see better). Exceptions: mutual "guard" (2 people same book, spouse, adam chashuv, students+master), familiarity with the text (Bameh Madlikin, Haggadah, known parashah), or awe of the Day (Yom Kippur).
2. The 4 key concepts condensed
| Concept | Meaning | Application |
|---|---|---|
| שֶׁמָּא יַטֶּה | "Lest he tilt" — preventive גזירה | No solitary reading by lamplight. Tilting the wick = מבעיר d'oraita. |
| "Guard" that neutralizes | Companion, spouse, אדם חשוב, אימת רבן/יום הכיפורים | Seifim 2-4, 6, 8 |
| Familiarity with the text | Knows by heart — does not need to see clearly | Bameh Madlikin (s.7), Haggadah (s.9), parashah (s.10) |
| אָדָם חָשׁוּב | Who is not used to handling lamps on weekdays | Permitted in all cases (s.4) |
3. Hierarchy of cases
General rule: no solitary reading by Shabbat lamplight (s.1).
↓
With a "guard": companion with same book OK (s.2-3); adam chashuv OK (s.4); children+master OK (s.6).
↓
Familiarity: Bameh Madlikin, Haggadah, Yom Kippur machzor — permitted (s.7-9).
↓
Stricter cases: bonfire (even 10 do not suffice, s.5); similar clothes/vessels (s.11-12).
4. Practical decision tree
Q1: I want to read by lamplight? → rule: forbidden (s.1).
↓
Q2: Is there a "guard"? Companion with same book, spouse, adam chashuv? → permitted (s.2-4).
↓
Q3: Familiar text (Bameh Madlikin, Haggadah, Yom Kippur machzor)? → permitted (s.7-9).
↓
Q4: Modern electric light? → no wick = no שמא יטה. Permitted per modern poskim.
5. The gezeirah שֶׁמָּא יַטֶּה and what neutralizes it
The entire siman רע"ה revolves around a single rabbinic concern: שֶׁמָּא יַטֶּה — "lest he tilt" the wick to revive the flame and see better, which constitutes a מַבְעִיר d'oraita. To understand the siman is to understand why this gezeirah is so broad — and through which precise mechanisms Chazal agree to lift it.
The delicate point — the absoluteness of the gezeirah. R. Yishmael ben Elisha (Shabbat 12b) declared: "I will read and I will not tilt" — and he tilted. The lesson: Chazal did not distinguish according to an individual's level of attention. The gezeirah therefore applies even to a lamp out of reach (high chandelier, elevated chanukiah): we do not reason "he could not tilt it even if he wanted to". The rule is uniform, which is what makes it so extensible.
Lever 1 — the "guard" (שְׁמִירָה). A third party present prevents tilting. But the Rema specifies (Hagahah): it is not enough to be two on the same subject — it must be the same book, otherwise each reads their own and no one watches. Hence the prohibition of piyutim in shul on the first night of Yom Tov falling on Shabbat: each has his own machzor.
↓
Lever 2 — familiarity with the text. Bameh Madlikin, the Haggadah, the well-known parashah: the reader knows them well enough not to need to see clearly. No reason to tilt → no gezeirah.
↓
Lever 3 — the person's status. The אָדָם חָשׁוּב is not used to handling lamps on weekdays: the reflex to tilt does not threaten him. Similarly, the אֵימַת יוֹם הַכִּפּוּרִים — awe of the Day — restrains the worshipper.
Modern consequence. An electric light has no wick: the feared act — tilting to revive — is physically impossible. The very engine of the gezeirah disappears, and modern poskim (Rav Feinstein, Rav Ovadia) permit reading. The Shulchan Aruch HaRav follows the Rema and extends the reasoning by הַרְחָקָה. The wick lamp, on the other hand, remains fully subject to the siman.
6. Mnemonic — S.G.F.
S — Shema yatteh (שמא יטה): fear of tilting. Solitary reading forbidden.
G — Guard that neutralizes: companion (same book), spouse, adam chashuv, students+master, awe of Yom Kippur.
F — Familiarity with the text: Bameh Madlikin, Haggadah, machzor — known by heart, permitted.
7. The 4 pitfalls to avoid
Pitfall 1 — Piyutim in shul on the first night of Yom Tov-Shabbat. Forbidden (Hagahah Rema s.2). Each has his own machzor — no mutual "guard". Unless there is adequate electric lighting.
Pitfall 2 — Sorting similar clothes by Shabbat lamplight. Forbidden (s.11). Under electric light: permitted.
Pitfall 3 — Believing that an inaccessible lamp (high chandelier) permits reading. Error (s.1) — the גזירה applies even to a lamp 10 stories high.
Pitfall 4 — Reading alone "because I am attentive". R. Yishmael ben Elisha said the same — and he tilted. Chazal did not distinguish.
8. Modern practical cases
| Situation | Conduct |
|---|---|
| Shabbat evening reading under electric light | Permitted (no wick). Modern poskim — Rav Feinstein, Rav Ovadia. |
| Shabbat reading by candle (countryside, no electricity) | Apply the siman — solo forbidden, with guard OK. |
| Shabbat-Pesach Haggadah by candlelight | Permitted (s.9) — familiar text. |
| Examining objects/medications on Shabbat by candle | Forbidden if sustained attention (s.11). Except emergency (פיקוח נפש). |
| Baby in front of Shabbat candles | Cover if naked (Hagahah Rema). |
| Student reads gemara alone on Shabbat by candle | Forbidden (s.1). Study with a chaver = OK (s.2, same book). |
9. Final synthesis table
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Subject | Forbidden things by Shabbat lamplight — שמא יטה |
| Number of seifim | 12 (Mechaber) + 3 הגהות (Rema) |
| Talmudic sources | Mishnah Shabbat 1:3; Shabbat 12b (R. Yishmael ben Elisha) |
| Mishnah Berurah | 27 entries |
| Concepts | שמא יטה — guard — familiarity — אדם חשוב |
| Modern practice | Electric light: permitted. Candles alone: apply the siman. |
