  9. The practical imperatives

1. The central Axiom

Siman רפ"א in one sentence.
Remarkable case where the Mechaber writes a single technical sentence (no bowing at "וְאָנוּ" of Modim deRabbanan) and the Rema writes 5 practical rules in one Hagaha that structure all of Shabbat morning: late arrival, extended zemiros, forgetting "לאל אשר שבת", permitted extension, chatzos limit.

2. The 5 key concepts condensed

ConceptMeaningApplication
שִׁחְיָהBowing in the Amidah — only 4 placesNot at "וְאָנוּ" of Modim deRabbanan (Mechaber)
Late arrival on ShabbatMinhag — "ביום השבת" suggests delayPermitted (Mordechai, Rema)
Morning zemirosPiyutim added to pesukei dezimraPermitted, no rebuke (Or Zarua)
לָאֵל אֲשֶׁר שָׁבַתCritical passage of Yotzer OrOnly "structural" forgetting: one goes back (Rema)
שעה ששית (chatzos)Halachic limit of the morning mealNot to exceed for seudas shacharis

3. Hierarchy of the rules

Technical rule: no bowing at "וְאָנוּ" (Mechaber).
Legitimate minhag: arriving later on Shabbat morning (Rema).
Permitted: extend the zemiros — each according to his rite.
Critical: "לָאֵל אֲשֶׁר שָׁבַת" — structural passage not to forget.
Limit: not to exceed chatzos for the seudas shacharis.

4. Practical decision tree

Q1: During Modim deRabbanan — bow at "וְאָנוּ"? → NO.
Q2: Arriving later than the week? → Legitimate minhag (Rema).
Q3: Long zemiros? → Permitted. No rebuke.
Q4: Forgetting "לאל אשר שבת"? → MB s.k. 3: say after the Amidah without berachah.
Q5: Tefilah exceeding chatzos? → Avoid. Better to shorten.

5. Forgetting לָאֵל אֲשֶׁר שָׁבַת — the heart of the siman

Of the five rules of siman רפ"א, four are quiet permissions: one may arrive later, one may extend the zemiros, one must not bow at "וְאָנוּ". Only one requires corrective action — and it is the heart of the siman: what to do when one has omitted the passage לָאֵל אֲשֶׁר שָׁבַת in the berachah of Yotzer Or?

Why this passage is "structural". לָאֵל אֲשֶׁר שָׁבַת is not a liturgical ornament: it is the proper mention of Shabbat inserted in the morning berachah. To omit it is to deprive the berachah of its character of the day. Hence the reflex: one should restart Yotzer Or from the beginning.
The exact rule — one does not repeat the berachah. The Mishnah Berurah (s.k. 3) rules: one continues and completes the berachah as is. The forgotten passage is made up after the Amidah, by reciting it alone, without a berachah. Repeating Yotzer Or would entail a repeated berachah — a בְּרָכָה לְבַטָּלָה — worse than the omission.
The borderline case to understand. The pitfall: equating this omission with that of an essential word of a berachah (where one repeats). The difference: לָאֵל אֲשֶׁר שָׁבַת is an addition of Shabbat, not the obligatory framework of the berachah. The berachah of Yotzer Or, valid on weekdays, remains valid without it; only the coloring of the day is missing, which is supplied separately. The golden rule: one corrects the omission by the least means — never by creating a superfluous berachah.
In practice. Omission noticed mid-Yotzer Or → do not stop, complete the berachah, then say the passage after the Amidah without berachah. And keep the framework of the siman: only 4 bows (not at "וְאָנוּ"), late arrival and extended zemiros permitted (do not rebuke long singers — בִּטּוּל תּוֹרָה), seudas shacharis before חֲצוֹת. For the SA HaRav and Chabad practice — tendency to shorten the piyutim; see Level 4.

6. Mnemonic — A.Z.O.

AArrival later on Shabbat morning (legitimate, Rema).

ZZemiros extended permitted (no rebuke).

OOmission of "לאל אשר שבת" = only case of repetition. Eat before chatzos.

7. The 4 pitfalls to avoid

Pitfall 1 — Bowing at "וְאָנוּ" out of enthusiasm. Error. Chazal established only 4 places.
Pitfall 2 — Repeating Yotzer Or because of forgetting "לאל אשר שבת". Error (MB s.k. 3). Say the passage after the Amidah without berachah.
Pitfall 3 — Eating after chatzos on Shabbat morning. To avoid. Better to shorten the tefilah.
Pitfall 4 — Censuring the long singers. The Or Zarua explicitly forbids reproaching them (bitul Torah).

8. Modern practical cases

SituationConduct in practice
Shul with long melodies — when does the meal begin?Ideally before chatzos. Adapt the length according to the calendar.
Forgetting "לאל אשר שבת" in the middle of Yotzer OrContinue the berachah. After the Amidah, say the passage without berachah.
Bar mitzvah — additional piyutimPermitted (Rema). But watch out for chatzos.
"Brisk" yeshiva that removes piyutimLitvish tradition — reduced to the basic pesukim. Legitimate tradition.
Chazan who bows 5 times during ModimRemind him of the halachah (Mechaber).

10. The 5 practical imperatives of Siman רפ"א

🕊️ The rules of Shabbat morning — in 5 imperatives

  1. Only 4 bows in the Amidah — not at "וְאָנוּ" of Modim deRabbanan.
  2. Late arrival permitted on Shabbat morning (Rema). But not to exceed zman Shema.
  3. Extended zemiros = permitted. No rebuke for long singers.
  4. Forgetting "לאל אשר שבת": say after the Amidah without berachah.
  5. Eat the seudas shacharis before chatzos midday. Limits the extension.
