1. The central axiom
Siman 280 in one sentence.
Marital relations are part of the taanugei Shabbos (delights of Shabbos) — not merely permitted but encouraged. The onah of talmidei chachamim is ideally Shabbos night. No issue of choveil (bi'as besulah = pesach sasum) and no issue of tza'ar (natural pain, not caused).
2. The 4 condensed key concepts
| Concept | Meaning | Application |
|---|---|---|
| עוֹנָה | Marital obligation (Shemos 21:10) | Talmidei chachamim: Shabbos night (s.1) |
| תַּעֲנוּגֵי שַׁבָּת | Delights of Shabbos (Yeshayahu 58:13) | Includes tashmish ha-mittah (s.1) |
| פֶּתַח סָתוּם | "Closed opening" | Bi'as besulah = opening of a natural passage, not choveil (s.2) |
| צַעַר נַעֲשֶׂה | Natural pain (not caused) | Not a "forbidden tza'ar" because not intentional (s.2) |
3. Hierarchy of rules
Encouraged: tashmish ha-mittah on Shabbos night — mitzvah + oneg.
↓
Standard: healthy couple. Onah of a talmid chacham = ideally Shabbos night.
↓
Adaptation: couples with fragile health — according to their strength.
↓
Permitted even in borderline cases: bi'as besulah on Shabbos — no choveil, no tza'ar (s.2).
4. Practical decision tree
Q1: Is the couple in good health? → Tashmish permitted and desired.
↓
Q2: When ideally? Shabbos night (talmidei chachamim) or leil tevilah.
↓
Q3: Honeymoon on Shabbos? → Permitted (s.2).
↓
Q4: Niddah? → Forbidden (niddah issue, not Shabbos).
↓
Q5: Shabbos–Yom Kippur? → Follow Yom Kippur (forbidden).
5. Bi'as besulah on Shabbos — פֶּתַח סָתוּם — the heart of the siman
The first seif — that tashmish ha-mittah is part of oneg — raises no difficulty. The real crux of Siman 280 is seif 2: why does the first union of a couple, on Shabbos night, raise no problem? Two melachos seem to be at issue, and the siman explains why neither applies.
First objection — חוֹבֵל. Bi'as besulah is accompanied by bleeding. Causing bleeding falls in principle under חוֹבֵל, a melachah of Shabbos. The siman's response: it is a פֶּתַח סָתוּם — the opening of a natural passage, already existing though closed. Nothing is "torn off" and no wound is "created": one opens what was meant to be opened. This is therefore not the חוֹבֵל the Torah forbade.
↓
Second objection — צַעַר. The union may be painful. But the pain here is not caused as a deliberate act: it is a צַעַר נַעֲשֶׂה, a natural pain that accompanies a permitted and desired act. Suffering that is not intentional, an inevitable consequence of a mitzvah, is not a "forbidden tza'ar."
The borderline case not to confuse. The central pitfall of the siman: to think the Mechaber only "tolerates bediavad" bi'as besulah on Shabbos night. False — he permits it לְכַתְּחִילָּה, fully and at the outset, since both objections fall away on analysis. Conversely, do not confuse the prohibitions of this siman with those of נִדָּה: a niddah remains forbidden on Shabbos night — but that is a Yoreh Deah prohibition, foreign to Shabbos, and in no way contradicts the principle of Siman 280.
In practice. Tashmish ha-mittah is a תַּעֲנוּג of Shabbos, encouraged — to defer out of false "reverence" for the day is to miss the mitzvah. The עוֹנָה of talmidei chachamim is ideally Shabbos night. The first union of a young couple on Shabbos night is permitted without reservation. For the SA HaRav and Chabad practice: like the Mechaber, with a kabbalistic dimension — see Level 4.
6. Mnemonic — T.O.P.
T — Tashmish ha-mittah = oneg Shabbat (s.1).
O — Onah of a talmid chacham = Shabbos night (Kesubos 62b).
P — Pesach sasum: bi'as besulah = natural opening, not choveil (s.2).
7. The 3 pitfalls to avoid
Pitfall 1 — Deferring out of "respect" for Shabbos. Error. Tashmish is part of the oneg. Deferring = missing the mitzvah.
Pitfall 2 — Hesitating with a besulah on Shabbos night (wedding case). Error. The Mechaber permits it "lechatchilah" (s.2).
Pitfall 3 — Confusing niddah prohibitions with Shabbos prohibitions. Siman 280 does NOT concern niddah questions — these follow their own framework (Yoreh Deah).
8. Modern practical cases
| Situation | Conduct |
|---|---|
| Healthy couple on Shabbos night | Recommended. Oneg Shabbat (s.1). |
| Honeymoon on Shabbos night | Permitted (s.2). No choveil, no tza'ar. |
| Niddah on Shabbos night | Forbidden (niddah, not Shabbos). Postponed until after tevilah. |
| Shabbos–Yom Kippur | Follow Yom Kippur (forbidden). |
| Elderly / fragile couple | Adaptation according to strength (MB s.k.2). |
| Leil tevilah falling midweek | Don't wait for Shabbos — leil tevilah comes first (MB s.k.3). |
9. Final synthesis table
| Element | Detail |
|---|---|
| Subject | Marital relations on Shabbos = oneg Shabbat |
| Number of seifim | 2 (Mechaber). No hagahah from the Rama. |
| Talmudic source | Kesubos 62b (onah of talmidei chachamim) + Shabbos 119b |
| Mishnah Berurah | 5 entries |
| Concepts | onah — taanugei Shabbos — pesach sasum — natural tza'ar |
| Unanimity | Mechaber/Rama fully agree |
10. The 3 practical directives of Siman 280
💍 The rule "tashmish ha-mittah on Shabbos" — in 3 directives
- Tashmish = oneg Shabbat — encouraged for healthy couples.
- Onah of a talmid chacham: Shabbos night ideal.
- Bi'as besulah on Shabbos permitted — no choveil, no tza'ar (s.2).
→ Niddah, contraception, etc.: their own simanim (Yoreh Deah).
