1. The central Axiom
The haftarah is a twin-city of the Torah reading on Shabbos: it lives through and after the Torah, preserves the memory of an era of persecution where the Neviim replaced the Torah, and counts 21 pesukim minimum (3 × 7 olim) + 7 brachos (2 before, 5 after) — always mei-inyana shel parashah (in thematic connection with the parashah).
2. Key concepts condensed
| Concept | Definition | Application |
|---|---|---|
| הפטרה | "That which concludes" — reading of the Neviim | Follows the Torah on Shabbos, Yom Tov, fast days |
| מעניינה של פרשה | "From the topic of the parashah" | Criterion for choosing the haftarah |
| כ"א פסוקים | 21 pesukim = 3 × 7 olim | Minimum required on Shabbos (15 on Yom Tov) |
| ז' ברכות | 2 before + 5 after | Conclude בא"ה הבוחר בתורה ובמשה / על התורה ועל העבודה |
| תרי קלי לא משתמעי | Two simultaneous voices inaudible | Not two maftirim together (Megillah 21b) |
| מאה ברכות | 100 daily brachos (Dovid HaMelech) | Complete via Amen on Shabbos |
| קטן מפטיר | A minor may do the maftir | Halachic foundation of Bar Mitzvah |
3. Hierarchy of the cases of the Siman
4. Decision tree — Maftir on the day
5. The heart of the siman — the haftarah as indivisible unit
The most subtle point of siman רפ"ד is neither the number of brachos nor the calendar of the haftaros, but a structural idea which governs several halachos of seif ה: the haftarah is read as a single block, analogous to a complete aliyah. Three borderline cases flow from this and must be resolved by this single principle.
| Borderline case | Application of the "indivisible unit" principle |
|---|---|
| The maftir is interrupted in the middle (nishtatek) | The replacement does not start where the other stopped: he restarts from the first pasuk. A haftarah "half said by one, half by the other" is not a haftarah — just as one does not split an aliyah between two olim. |
| Two people want to read together (to "help") | Assur: תְּרֵי קָלֵי לָא מִשְׁתַּמְעֵי (Megillah 21b) — two simultaneous voices are inaudible. The haftarah must come from one mouth, otherwise the tzibbur is not yotzei anything. |
| How many pesukim: 21, or less? | 21 pesukim (3 × 7 olim) are the standard; but if the prophetic topic concludes earlier (slik inyana), one stops — because what makes the unit is the closed thematic content, not a mechanical count. |
6. Mnemonic — "21 · 7 · 7"
21 — minimum pesukim on Shabbos (3 × 7 olim). On Yom Tov: 15 (3 × 5).
7 — brachos of the haftarah: 2 before + 5 after.
7 — seifim of the Mechaber: structure, R"Ch, Amen, Katan, Nishtatek, Golel, Mechubaros.
Mnemonic of the Rama's 4: 15 · אחר · יחיד · יקום
15 — 15 pesukim ביו"ט (instead of 21).
אחר — another may read for the one who does not know.
יחיד — one maftir at a time (trei kali).
יקום — Yekum Purkan + Av HaRachamim (Ashkenazi minhag).
7. Pitfalls to avoid
8. Modern practical cases
| Situation | Reference | Conduct in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Bar Mitzvah at maftir | Seif ד | The new bar mitzvah reads with the 7 brachos; halachic entry into adulthood |
| Bas Mitzvah | Outside siman (cf. minhag) | No traditional maftir; according to contemporary minhagim |
| Shabbos-R"Ch | Seif ב | Haftarah "HaShamayim kis'i" (Yeshayahu 66); do not mention R"Ch |
| Shabbos Mevarchim | Seif ז (Rama) | Many minhagim do not say Av HaRachamim that day |
| Chasan in the kehillah | Seif ז (Rama) | Do not say Av HaRachamim (day of simchah) |
| Printed Chumash without Neviim | MB (א) | B'di'eved yes; lechatchilah complete Neviim |
| Travel / no minyan | Seif א (Rama) | Read haftarah without brachos |
| Minor error in middle | Seif ה | If not substantial → continue; if substantial → reread |
9. Final synthesis table
| Element | Detail |
|---|---|
| Topic of the siman | The haftarah and its 7 brachos |
| Number of seifim | 7 |
| Mishnah Berurah | 18 entries |
| Talmudic source | Megillah 21a-23b; Rivash §36 |
| Historical origin | Gezeirah prohibiting Torah (Antiochus according to Levush), kept after |
| Liturgical structure | 2 brachos before + reading (≥21 p. Shabbos / ≥15 p. Yom Tov) + 5 brachos after |
| Link to the Torah | Mei-inyana shel parashah + after the public Torah reading |
| Practical decision | Follow the minhag of the kehillah; in borderline cases consult a Rav |
10. The 7 practical commandments of Siman רפ"ד
For the maftir and the kehillah
- Choose a haftarah mei-inyana shel parashah — according to the luach of the kehillah.
- Read at least 21 pesukim on Shabbos (15 on Yom Tov), unless the topic concludes earlier.
- Always after the Torah reading — no brachos without Torah read.
- On Shabbos-R"Ch: do not modify the brachos to mention Rosh Chodesh.
- Answer Amen with kavanah to the brachos of the olim and of the maftir — to complete the 100 brachos.
- In case of nishtatek: one single replacement who restarts from the beginning; never in two voices.
- Wait until the golel has finished rolling the sefer Torah before starting.
