  9. The practical rulings

1. The central axiom

Siman רפ״ו in one sentence.
The tefilah of Musaf on Shabbos — the 4th tefilah of the day, established in correspondence with the additional Shabbos korban (Bamidbar 28:9-10) — is davened immediately after Shacharis, up to the end of the 7th hour. Beyond this = "poshea" but valid. Missed for the entire day, no tashlumin — unique among the tefilos.

2. The key concepts condensed

ConceptDefinitionApplication
תפלת מוסף4th tefilah of ShabbosCorresponds to the korban musaf
סוף שבע שעות≈ 1:00 PM zmanios"Lechatchilah" limit
פושע"Negligent"Status of one who delays beyond
אין לה תשלומיןNo compensationUnique property of Musaf
תדיר קודםThe more frequent comes firstMinchah before Musaf in conflict (except in public)
לסעוד הלב"To sustain the heart"Permits tasting before Musaf
נשיאת כפיםBirkas KohanimExists at Musaf (Seif Alef)

3. Temporal hierarchy of Musaf

★★★★ Lechatchilah: immediately after Shacharis (before the 7th hour ≈ 1:00 PM)
★★★ Bedi'eved: after 1:00 PM until sunset — "poshea" but valid
★ No tashlumin: if the entire day passes without Musaf → the mitzvah is missed definitively
Bedi'eved of the Rema: davened Musaf before Shacharis → yotzei (exceptional)

4. Decision tree — Minchah vs Musaf when delayed

Q1: What time is it?
↓ Before six and a half hours (chatzos) → Musaf only
↓ After six and a half hours → possible conflict
Q2: Am I alone (yachid) or in public?
↓ Yachid → Minchah first (tadir kodem)
↓ Public → Musaf after Shacharis (shelo yit'u)
Q3: If you reversed the order → yatza yedei chovaso (Rashba/Rema).
Q4: If Minchah ketanah has arrived (9.5 zmanios hours) → Minchah first even in public (Yerushalmi/Rema).

5. The heart of the siman — Musaf, the tefilah without tashlumin

The property that distinguishes Musaf from all other tefilos — and which constitutes the true heart of Siman רפ״ו — is captured in four words: אֵין לָהּ תַּשְׁלוּמִין, "it has no compensation". One must understand why, since this governs all practical halachah.

The mechanism of ordinary tashlumin: one who misses Shacharis makes it up at Minchah; one who misses Minchah makes it up at Maariv. A missed tefilah is "replayed" at the following tefilah, because the daily tefilos follow one another in a chain.
↓ why Musaf escapes the rule
Musaf does not correspond to any chain: it is established corresponding to the korban musaf of the day (Bamidbar 28:9-10), a korban that can only be offered on that very day. Once the time has passed, the korban is lost — and with it the "content" that Musaf came to represent. There is nothing to defer.

The decisive borderline case follows from this: one who, thinking to "make up" Musaf, would daven a second Amidah at Minchah, utters a berachah levatalah — he fulfills no mitzvah and utters Hashem's Name in vain. Missed for the entire day, Musaf is missed definitively; one accepts this and does better the following week.

The principle to take away. The rest of the siman is derived from this uniqueness: one davens Musaf right after Shacharis (before the 7th hour) precisely because no safety net exists downstream; and the severity of the term "פּוֹשֵׁעַ" for one who delays beyond this is understood in light of this irreparability.

6. Mnemonic — "7.0.M"

77th hour = "lechatchilah" limit for Musaf (≈ 1:00 PM zmanios).

0Zero tashlumin: Musaf missed for the entire day = irreparable mitzvah.

MMinchah tadir → kodem in case of time conflict (except in public).

"TPK" mnemonic for the 3 specificities of Musaf:

TTadir: must be davened before Minchah which is tadir.

PPasse over: no tashlumin — irreparable.

KKorban: zecher to the korban musaf of Shabbos.

7. Pitfalls to avoid

Pitfall 1 — Voluntarily delaying Musaf past 1:00 PM: though valid, one is called "poshea". Do not make this a habit.
Pitfall 2 — Thinking that a missed Musaf is made up at Minchah: false. No tashlumin. If one davens Minchah twice thinking to make up Musaf — it is a berachah levatalah.
Pitfall 3 — Full meal between Shacharis and Musaf: seudah = forbidden. Only "liso'ad halev" (fruits, a little bread).
Pitfall 4 — Reversing the order in public: in shul one always follows Shacharis → Musaf → ... → Minchah, even if technically Minchah is tadir and should come first. "Shelo yit'u."
Pitfall 5 — Believing that Musaf requires a minyan: false. Individual chiyuv (Seif Beis), like any Amidah. With a minyan, chazaras hashatz is added.

10. The 5 practical rulings of Siman רפ״ו

To daven Musaf Shabbos properly

  1. Daven Musaf immediately after Shacharis — at the latest before the 7th zmanios hour (≈ 1:00 PM).
  2. Never eat a true meal before Musaf — fruits, cake, pas k'beitzah OK, seudah no.
  3. Even alone, daven Musaf — it is an individual chiyuv, not dependent on a minyan.
  4. If delayed past Minchah gedolah (6.5 hours): as a yachid, daven Minchah first; in public, follow the usual order.
  5. If missed for the entire day: no tashlumin — accept the loss and do better the following week.
