Summary & mnemonics for review
📑 Plan of the synthesis
1. The central axiom
Siman 313 in one sentence.
To close a window, to lock a door — is this building (boneh) or merely using? Answer: if the object has the status of a k'li (תורת כלי), its use is not "building." And the more the object resembles building, the greater the demand to confer this status: plug → prior thought; reed → preparation; peg-bolt → attachment.

2. Key concepts condensed
| Concept | Definition | Application |
|---|---|---|
| בונה | Build | Melachah — assemble, fasten, "add to the building" |
| סותר | Demolish | Twin melachah |
| תורת כלי | K'li status | A k'li — its use is not "building" |
| ציר | Pivot/hinge | Reseating a pivot = boneh |
| מחשבה מערב שבת | Prior thought | Confers k'li status on the plug |
3. Hierarchy of cases
1. Installed door/window, normal use → muttar.
↓
2. Plug (less like building) → muttar if thought of the day before.
↓
3. Reed-bolt (more like) → muttar if prepared.
↓
4. Peg-bolt (very like) → muttar only if tied.
↓
5. Bolt piercing the ground / reseating a pivot → boneh, assur.
4. Decision tree
Q1: Is the object installed for regular use (door, window)?
↓
If YES → using it = muttar.
↓
If NO (removable object): does it have k'li status?
↓
Check the required level: thought (plug) / preparation (reed) / attachment (bolt).
↓
Q2: Does the act pierce the ground / reseat a pivot? → boneh, assur.
5. The ladder of toras k'li — three levels
The heart of the siman: a removable object closing an opening is not in itself a k'li. For its use to stop being "building," it must be granted the k'li status. The siman lays down a graduated rule: the more an object resembles building, the greater the effort required to give it that status.
| Object | Resemblance to building | Required act for k'li status |
|---|---|---|
| פקק החלון — plug | Weak | Prior thought (machshavah me-erev Shabbos) |
| קנה — reed-bolt | Medium | Preparation — shaped, ready to serve |
| נגר — peg-bolt | Strong | Attachment — tied to the door, not touching ground |
Edge: where the ladder stops
Beyond the last rung, no act "saves" the object. A peg-bolt that pierces the ground, or reseating a hinge in its socket, are actual boneh: one no longer uses a k'li, one adds to the building itself.
The reasoning to remember: never just ask "is this a movable object?", but "has this object received, at the level its nature demands, its k'li status?".
6. Mnemonic "פק"נ"
פ — Pekak (פקק החלון) — plug: prior thought suffices.
ק — Kaneh (קנה) — reed: preparation required.
נ — Neger (נגר) — peg-bolt: attachment required.
— The more it resembles building, the higher the demand.
7. Pitfalls
Pitfall 1 — Reseating a door on its hinges: a door off its hinges — putting it back = boneh. Don't on Shabbos.
Pitfall 2 — Assembling furniture: setting up a bookshelf, screwing parts together = building. Assur.
Pitfall 3 — Bolt piercing the ground: a peg-bolt sinking into the earth = actual building.
Pitfall 4 — Electric shutter / door: beyond boneh, it's electricity — absolute issur.
Pitfall 5 — Thinking any removable object is muttar: it must have k'li status.
8. Modern practical cases
| Situation | Conduct |
|---|---|
| Open/close a door on fixed hinges | Muttar (normal use) |
| Put back a door off its hinges | Assur (boneh) |
| Manual roller shutter | Generally muttar |
| Electric shutter / door | Assur (electricity) |
| Lock/unlock an ordinary lock | Muttar |
| Electronic lock / padlock | Assur |
| Unfold a folding bed designed for it | Muttar (use) |
| Assemble furniture from pieces | Assur (boneh) |
| Peg-bolt piercing the ground | Assur (boneh) |
9. Final summary table
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Topic | Doors, windows, locks on Shabbos — boneh/soser applied |
| Number of se'ifim | 10 |
| Mishnah Berurah | 56 entries |
| Talmudic sources | Shabbos 125b-126a (pekak ha-chalon; neger) |
| Melachos | Boneh and soser |
| Pivotal concept | Toras k'li |
| Practical ruling | Normal use of installed objects = muttar. Assembly / pivot / piercing bolt / electricity = assur. |
10. Practical mandates of Siman 313
Doors and windows on Shabbos — the checklist
- Normal use of an installed door / window / shutter = muttar.
- Do not reseat a door on its hinges (boneh).
- Do not assemble furniture from pieces.
- Peg-bolt: ensure it does not pierce the ground.
- Removable object serving as closure: must have k'li status.
- Electric shutter/lock: assur (electricity).
- In doubt → consult the Rav.
