1. The Central Axiom

Siman שי"ז in one sentence.
The twin melakhot kosher / matir (tying / untying) are classified by 2 crossed criteria: kesher shel kayama (durable) × maaseh uman (craftsman's). Durable + uman = chayav; only one of them = patur aval asur; neither = mutar. The aniva (bow/loop) is never a knot — always mutar.

2. Key concepts condensed

ConceptDefinitionApplication
קושר / מתירTo tie / to untieTwin melakhot of the 39
קשר של קיימאDurable knot1st criterion (day / 7 days / forever)
מעשה אומןCraftsman's knot2nd criterion
עניבהBow / loopNot a knot — always mutar
קשר על גבי עניבהKnot + bow (shoelace)Mutar (undone within the day)

3. Hierarchy of cases

1. Simple bow (aniva) → mutar freely.
2. Temporary knot + non-craftsman's → mutar.
3. Durable knot or craftsman's (only one) → patur aval asur.
4. Durable knot and craftsman's → chayav chatat.

4. Decision tree

Q1: Is it a simple bow (aniva)? → mutar.
Q2: Is the knot meant to remain (durable)?
Q3: Is the knot of craftsman's make?
Cross: durable+uman = chayav; one of them = patur aval asur; neither = mutar.

5. The two crossed criteria of the knot — durable × craftsman's

The difficulty of the siman is not to know the list of permitted or forbidden knots, but to grasp the grid that produces them. קושר and its twin מתיר are not judged by a single parameter but by two independent criteria that cross — and it is their combination, not each on its own, that determines the status.

First criterion: קשר של קיימא — is the knot durable?

A knot meant to be undone within the day does not have the permanence that characterizes the melakha; a knot one wishes to leave in place does have the intention of duration. It is a criterion of intention: what does one mean to do with this knot? The durable covers from the knot kept for several days up to the knot "forever".

Second criterion: מעשה אומן — is the knot craftsman's?

Independently of its duration, a knot can be of expert make — tight, elaborate, such as a craftsman would make — or of ordinary make. It is a criterion of form, which does not look at intention but at the very nature of the work.

The crossing: three levels from two axes

Durable?Craftsman's?Status
YesYesחייב חטאת — asur from the Torah
YesNoPatur aval asur — single criterion
NoYesPatur aval asur — single criterion
NoNoMutar

The borderline case: the aniva, which escapes the grid

The עניבה (bow) is not "a weak knot" that one would place at the bottom of the table: it is not a knot at all. It comes undone by a simple pull, without a true untying. That is why the shoelace — a knot topped with a bow, undone every day — remains mutar: the aniva is the structural way out of the entire siman.

The sevara to remember: never judge a knot on a single axis. And since matir follows exactly the same grid as kosher — a knot one would not have had the right to tie, one does not have the right to untie. Minhag note: Sefardim require both criteria for חייב, while for Ashkenazim a durable knot alone suffices to render חייב.

6. Mnemonic "קמ"ע"

קKayama (קשר של קיימא) — durable? 1st criterion.

מMaaseh uman (מעשה אומן) — craftsman's? 2nd criterion.

עAniva (עניבה) — bow: always mutar.

— Crossing the 2 criteria = the 3 levels. The bow is the way out.

7. Pitfalls to avoid

Pitfall 1 — The double knot: two knots one on the other = potentially craftsman's knot. The Rama recommends not to undo it — but in case of distress, mutar.
Pitfall 2 — Thinking that every knot is asur: no — a temporary amateur knot is mutar. And the bow always is.
Pitfall 3 — The "permanent" knot: tying something so it stays in place for a long time (mezuza cord, etc.) = durable knot, asur.
Pitfall 4 — Untying = tying: one forgets that matir (untying) follows the same rules. A knot one would not have the right to tie, one does not have the right to untie.

8. Modern practical cases

SituationPractice
Shoelaces (knot + bow)Mutar
Tight double knotTo avoid; in case of distress, untying mutar
Garbage bag knot (temporary)Mutar; prefer a bow
Tie knot (undone every day)Mutar
Robe / dress beltMutar (bow or temporary knot)
Tying a cord "forever"Asur (durable knot)

10. The practical commandments of Siman שי"ז

Tying on Shabbat — the checklist

  1. No durable knot (meant to remain a long time).
  2. Bow (aniva) = always mutar.
  3. Shoelaces (knot + bow) = mutar.
  4. Tight double knots = to avoid; in case of distress, untying mutar.
  5. Untying follows the rules of tying — same criteria.
  6. Sefardim: durable+uman = chayav. Ashkenazim: any durable = chayav.
  7. In case of safek → consult the Rav.
