📑 Study outline
1. The Shulchan Aruch text
Siman שי״ז contains seven seifim of the Mechaber (Rabbi Yosef Karo) which codify the rules of tying and untying (kesher / aniva) on Shabbos.
Seif א — The categories of knots
- One who ties a lasting knot that is ALSO a craftsman’s knot: liable.
- The seif’s examples: the cameleers’ knot, the sailors’ knot, and the strap-knots of shoe and sandal the cobblers make in fashioning them.
- But a lasting knot that is not a craftsman’s — the siman pursues the distinction.
Seif ב — Replacing shoe straps
- The straps of a shoe or sandal have come loose, or most of the foot has slipped out:
- permitted to put the straps back — provided he does not tie.
- Rama: and only if he can replace them without effort; if effort is needed — forbidden, lest he tie.
Seif ג — Untying the launderer's knot; sewing
- One may undo the neck-opening from the knot the launderer tied — it is no lasting knot.
- But one does not open it anew — for that is מתקן מנא.
- Rama: even if it was already opened, but the craftsman retied or resewed it as craftsmen do; hence it is forbidden to tear or cut a pair.
Seif ד — Tying a bucket
- One ties a bucket with a cord or a belt and the like — but not with a rope.
- And this for buckets fixed at the cistern; our buckets, not so fixed — it is no lasting knot.
Seif ה — Aniva
- A bow is permitted — it is not a knot.
- Rama: and even if he makes a single knot beneath it, the practice is to permit.
Seif ו — Rope before a cow
- One ties a rope before the cow that it not go out — and even at both ends of the opening.
- And we do not fear he will untie one end to lead it out there, leaving the other tied.
Seif ז — The weaver's rope
- One may handle a weaver’s rope to tie it to the manger and the cow — and we do not fear he will untie one end and leave the other.
- But an ordinary rope — no.
- And this to tie it to manger AND cow; but if it was already tied to one and he wishes to tie it to the other — the siman continues.
2. The general context — keshira and hatara
What is this siman about?
Siman שי״ז deals with the twin melachos קושר (kosher — tying) and מתיר (matir — untying), which are among the 39 melachos. In the Mishkan, they used to tie and untie the threads of the chilazon fishing nets (for the tcheilles dye) and the cords of the curtains.
- קשר של קיימא (kesher shel kayama, permanent knot) — meant to remain (vs a temporary knot).
- מעשה אומן (ma'aseh uman, kesher d'omanin — craftsman's knot) — a professional, skilled knot (vs a laymen's knot, ma'aseh hedyot).
- חייב חטאת — permanent and craftsman (the most severe).
- פטור אבל אסור — permanent or craftsman (only one of the two).
- מותר לכתחילה — neither permanent nor craftsman (freely permitted).
Place within Hilchos Shabbos
Siman שי״ז is very everyday: shoelaces, bags, ties, all sorts of knots. It also introduces the great permitted alternative — עניבה (aniva — a bow / loop) — which is the main practical recourse.
3. The key halachic concepts
4. Mapping the 7 seifim
| Seif | Theme | Central concept |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The 3 categories of knots (permanent × craftsman) |
| 2 | Replacing shoe straps | Without tying; without effort |
| 3 | Untying the launderer's knot; sewing | מתקן מנא; opening the neck opening |
| 4 | The bucket knot, the halter — temporary | Permitted knots |
| 5 | Aniva (making a loop) — permitted |
| 6-7 | Shoelaces, belt, daily borderline cases |
- Is the knot meant to remain (permanent) or to be untied soon?
- Is it a craftsman's knot or a laymen's knot?
- Combine the two criteria → chayav / patur aval assur / permitted
- A simple aniva (loop) is always permitted
5. The Mishnah Berurah — opening entries
The Mishnah Berurah of Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan (the Chofetz Chaim) counts 35 entries on this siman. Here are the opening ones — for a better grasp of the seifim:
For the full text of the 35 entries, see Sefaria: Mishnah Berurah 317.
6. The Rema's position
The Rema enriches the siman with important practical glosses:
- Seif 1 — Holds (with Rashi, Rosh) that any permanent knot, even of a layman, is chayav. And proposes the "seven days" definition of "permanent."
- Seif 1 — Advises not to untie a double knot (two knots one on top of the other) — since we no longer recognize what counts as a craftsman's knot. But in case of pain (a shoe tied too tight) — permitted (rabbinic prohibition only).
- Seif 3 — Forbids cutting the stitching that joins a pair of new shoes (in craftsman fashion), even though the stitching is not permanent.
- Mechaber → a permanent layman's knot = patur (not chayav).
- Rema → every permanent knot = chayav; caution on double knots.
- Chabad → Shulchan Aruch HaRav siman
7. Modern practical cases
| Situation | Halachic analysis |
|---|---|
| Shoelaces | Permitted — a single knot + a bow (aniva), untied each day. Standard practice. |
| Tight double knot | Tying/untying = to be avoided (Rema) — we no longer recognize what is a craftsman's knot. If uncomfortable → untying is permitted. |
| Knot of a garbage bag | Temporary knot (untied that day) + laymen's = permitted. But a tight double knot → be cautious. |
| Necktie | The tie's knot (undone each day) = permitted. But one does not make a "permanent" tie knot. |
| Tying a bag for the day | Permitted (temporary). Preferable to use a loop. |
| Bathrobe belt | Permitted — a temporary layman's knot. |
| Undoing a string-tied gift wrap | Permitted if temporary knot. Cutting the string → a separate question (mechatech). |
8. Practical synthesis of the siman
- Kosher / matir (tying / untying) — twin melachos among the 39.
- 2 criteria: permanent (shel kayama) × craftsman (ma'aseh uman).
- 3 levels: permanent + craftsman = chayav; only one = patur aval assur; neither = permitted.
- Aniva (loop) = always permitted — the basis for shoelaces.
- Rema: every permanent knot = chayav; caution on double knots.
- In case of pain: untying is permitted (rabbinic prohibition only).
9. Comprehension questions
- What are the two twin melachos of this siman?
- Name the 2 criteria that classify a knot, and the 3 resulting levels.
- What is kesher shel kayama? How is "permanent" defined?
- What is the aniva? Why is it permitted?
- Why does the Rema advise caution on double knots?
- May one tie one's shoelaces on Shabbos? Why?
- A shoe with a painful tight double knot — may one untie it on Shabbos?
