  9. Final flashcard

1. The axiom: the manner of use dictates the manner of kashering

The starting point:

Siman 121 does not ask whether the vessel is permitted, but how to make it permitted. Its master rule is stated in the very first line of seif א: « כדרך שנשתמש בהן העובד כוכבים כך הוא הכשרן » — the channel through which the forbidden taste entered dictates the channel through which it is driven out. The Rama restates it in seif ו in its classic form: « כבולעו כך פולטו ». Hence three rungs: what was used only cold needs only a הדחה with שפשוף and then שטיפה; what was used hot through a liquid needs הגעלה; what was used at the fire without liquid — the מחבת — needs ליבון. A fourth act, of an entirely different nature, joins them for metal: the tevila of siman ק״כ · 120.
ActMechanismWhen
הדחה · שפשוף · שטיפהRemoving and scouring the issur that lies on the wallA vessel whose use was cold (seif א)
הגעלהExpelling with boiling water the taste that entered through a liquidA metal, wood or stone vessel used hot (seif ב)
ליבוןBurning out the taste that entered through fire, with no liquid mediumThe מחבת and every dry-fire vessel (seif ד)
טבילהRemoves no taste at all: it moves the vessel from tumah to taharaMetal (and glass) — siman ק״כ · 120; here seifim א-ב
💡 The handle: do not confuse this siman with siman ק״כ · 120. The 120 deals with טבילה, which removes no taste, does not depend on prior use, and applies only to metal (and glass) — the Shach says so here itself: « דוקא כלי מתכת צריך טבילה » (ש״ך יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק ב). The 121 deals with הכשר, which expels the absorbed taste, depends entirely on prior use, and applies to every material. A metal vessel bought second-hand from a non-Jew needs both.

2. The 3 reflex questions

■ HOW DID HE USE IT? (צונן / חמין / אור) — this is the question of the siman. Cold → הדחה with שפשוף and then שטיפה (seif א). Hot through a liquid → הגעלה (seif ב). At dry fire, like the pan one fries in → ליבון (seif ד).
↓ then
■ WHAT IS IT MADE OF? (מתכת · עץ · אבן · חרס) — metal, wood and stone are all three kashered by הגעלה (seif ב). Earthenware cannot be kashered: if it was used only cold, the Rama holds that since הגעלה is impossible we are effectively בדיעבד, and a careful מריקה ושטיפה suffices (Rama, seif ה).
↓ then
■ AND THE TEVILA? (טבילה · order · berakha) — only metal requires it. Normal order: kasher and then immerse (seif ב). Immersed first, it is still valid — but a yesh omrim requires re-immersion, and the Shach specifies: without a berakha (ש״ך יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק ה).

⚖ The basic grid (seifim א, ב, ד)

Cold → הדחה (cups and צלוחיות: scour well, rinse, immerse). Hot through a liquid → הגעלה (metal, wood, stone), then tevila for metal. Dry fire → ליבון: the מחבת one fries in, which for Pesach hametz needs only הגעלה, requires ליבון for other prohibitions. Two reasons in the Shach: for hametz « כיון דהתירא בלע » — it absorbed while the substance was still permitted (ש״ך יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק ח, and likewise ט״ז יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק ג); or, in the name of the Menachem Azaria, because a non-Jew's frying pan is mostly used without water, with oil — from which it would follow that a milk or meat frying pan also requires ליבון.

3. Master table — the use dictates the hekhsher (seifim א, ב, ד, ה, ז)

To be memorized. Base: Mehaber seifim א to ז, read with the Rama, the Shach and the Taz.

SituationDeciding factorResult
Second-hand vessel used cold (כוסות וצלוחיות) The issur lies on the wall, not inside it 🟢 הדחה with שפשוף היטב, then שטיפה, then tevila (seif א)
Metal, wood or stone vessel used hot Taste that entered through a boiling liquid 🟡 הגעלה, then tevila if it is metal (seif ב)
מחבת — the pan one fries in Dry fire: hametz needs only הגעלה, other prohibitions do not 🔴 ליבון (seif ד)
הגעלה was done where ליבון was required The absorbed issur remains 🔴 Hot use forbidden, even off the fire (seif ה) — and here even בדיעבד (ט״ז יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק ה)
That same vessel, used cold occasionally דרך עראי (in the non-Jew's house) or בדיעבד 🟢 Permitted even לכתחילה, by הדחה ושפשוף היטב (Rama, seif ה)
That same vessel, used cold on a permanent basis (בקבע) גזרה שמא ישתמש בו חמין 🔴 יש מחמירים require הגעלה or ליבון — « והכי נוהגין » (Rama, seif ה)
Earthenware (כלי חרס) used cold הגעלה is impossible → deemed בדיעבד 🟢 מריקה ושטיפה היטב suffices, and afterwards one may put in even דברים חריפים (Rama, seif ה)
Metal vessel where the issur touched only part חם מקצתו חם כולו forbids, but does not kasher 🔴 The hekhsher must cover the whole vessel (seif ו)
The same, where it is known that only part was used כבולעו כך פולטו 🟢 Kashering that part suffices — but only בדיעבד (Rama seif ו; ש״ך יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק י״ח)
Old knife without גומות, for cold use נעיצה ten times, each time in hard ground and in a fresh spot 🟢 Permitted, even to cut a דבר חריף such as a radish (seif ז)
Knife with גומות, or for hot, or for שחיטה נעיצה no longer suffices 🔴 ליבון, or השחזה on a smiths' whetstone over its whole surface (seif ז)
📌 The key reading: to choose the act, ask through what the taste entered — nothing else. Through a cold wall → scour. Through a boiling liquid → scald. Through dry fire → burn. And remember that the Mehaber himself sends you elsewhere for the technique: « דיני הגעלה וליבון הלא הם כתובים בהלכות פסח » (seif ג) — the how is learned in או״ח סימן תנ״א-תנ״ב, the when is learned here.

4. Hekhsher and tevila: order, material, berakha (seif ב)

Seif ב lays two distinct obligations one on the other and fixes their order. It is the passage of the siman most often misremembered.

CaseRulingSource
הגעלה then טבילה (the normal order)🟢 Valid, and this is how it is done לכתחילהMehaber, seif ב
טבילה then הגעלה🟢 « ואם הטבילן ואחר כך הגעילן מותרים » — valid according to the MehaberMehaber, seif ב
The same case according to the yesh omrim🟡 « ויש אומרים שצריך לחזור ולהטבילן »Mehaber, seif ב
The reason of the yesh omrim🟡 « דה״ל כטובל ושרץ בידו » — immersing a vessel still holding issurש״ך יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק ד; ט״ז יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק א
That second immersion — with or without a berakha?🟢 « ונראה דיש לחזור ולהטבילן בלא ברכה »ש״ך יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק ה
Which vessels need tevila at all?🟢 « דוקא כלי מתכת צריך טבילה » — the wood and stone of seif ב are exemptש״ך יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק ב (cf. siman ק״כ · 120)
Why does the order matter so little to the Mehaber?🟢 « דאין הטבילה צורך ההגעלה אלא שיצא בטבילה מטומאה לטהרה »ט״ז יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק א
💡 Worth remembering: the Taz gives the key to the whole dispute — tevila is not a stage of the hekhsher; they are two registers that do not speak to each other. Hence: for the Mehaber the inversion spoils nothing; for the yesh omrim it jars, because the immersion was performed on a vessel still holding issur. In practice one re-immerses — without a berakha, since the doubt bears on an immersion already performed.

5. The 6 golden rules

  1. « כדרך שנשתמש בהן העובד כוכבים כך הוא הכשרן ». The whole remainder of the siman is nothing but an application of that sentence in seif א; the Rama restates it in seif ו: « כבולעו כך פולטו ».
  2. No הגעלה on a vessel that is בן יומו. « אין להגעיל שום כלי כל זמן שהוא בן יומו » (Rama, seif ב, in the name of the Tur). The Taz adds, in the name of the Tur, the way out that the Rama did not copy: « ואין מגעילין הכלי עד שלא יהא ב״י או שיהיו במים שמגעילין בו ס׳ כנגדו » (ט״ז יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק ב).
  3. One does not use the הגעלה water. « ואין להשתמש במי הגעלה » (Rama, seif ב, in the name of the Arokh).
  4. Scraping does not replace הגעלה. « לא מהני אם קלפו לכלי בכלי אומנות » (Rama, seif ב, in the name of the Terumat HaDeshen, the Mordechai and the Hagahot Shaarei Dura).
  5. The hekhsher must cover the whole vessel — « בין לענין הגעלה בין לענין ליבון » (seif ו). The Rama's partial hekhsher (כבולעו כך פולטו) is only a בדיעבד: « אבל לכתחלה ג״כ צריך להכשיר כולו » (ש״ך יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק י״ח).
  6. A הגעלה where a ליבון was required repairs nothing. Hot use stays forbidden even off the fire (seif ה), and here the Taz is categorical: « אפילו דיעבד אסור וזה פשוט » (ט״ז יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק ה).

6. Mnemonics — the ladder of hekhsher and the 4 ways a הגעלה fails

The ladder of hekhsher — five rungs, in the order of the siman
The 4 failures that void a הגעלה

7. The 4 classic pitfalls

❌ Pitfall 1 — Taking Pesach as the measure of everything: seif ד says exactly the opposite. The מחבת one fries in needs only הגעלה for Pesach hametz, but « לענין שאר איסורים צריכה ליבון ». The reason given by the Taz and the Shach: for hametz the absorption took place while the substance was still permitted — « כיון דהיתרא קא בלע » (ט״ז יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק ג); here the absorption is forbidden from the start. Never carry a Pesach leniency over to the prohibitions of Yoreh De'ah.
❌ Pitfall 2 — Blurring hekhsher into tevila: they are two acts, two reasons, two scopes. Tevila applies only to metal (ש״ך יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק ב), removes no taste, and « אין הטבילה צורך ההגעלה » (ט״ז יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק א). Hence the consequences: the wood and stone of seif ב are kashered and never immersed; and if one immersed before kashering, the Mehaber permits while the yesh omrim require re-immersion — without a berakha (ש״ך יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק ה).
❌ Pitfall 3 — Thinking that “cold” always exempts from everything: the Rama in seif ה distinguishes two regimes. דרך עראי — in the non-Jew's house, or בדיעבד — even a vessel holding issur may be used cold after הדחה ושפשוף היטב. But for permanent use, « יש מחמירים ואומרים דאפילו להשתמש בו צונן צריך הגעלה או ליבון », lest one end up using it hot, and the Rama concludes: « והכי נוהגין ». He adds two extensions drawn from life: silver vessels, where one suspects wine was warmed in them, and even chests and tables bought from non-Jews, which are customarily scalded — but only לכתחילה, since « אבל בדיעבד אין לחוש » (and the Taz, ט״ז יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק ה, stresses that this last leniency bears on the gloss and not on the Mehaber's own ruling).
❌ Pitfall 4 — Treating the knife casually: the נעיצה of seif ז is an exacting procedure, not a symbolic gesture. Ten times, each time into hard ground, and never twice in the same place: « לפיכך לא ינעוץ במקום שנעץ נעיצה אחרת ». It permits only cold use, and only if the blade has no גומות. With גומות, or to cut hot, or for שחיטה: ליבון or השחזה over the whole blade — and the Rama narrows it further: « וי״א דהשחזה מהני רק לחתוך בה צונן אבל לא לענין חמין », « והכי נהוג לכתחלה ». The Shach is lenient בדיעבד: after a thorough השחזה, hot use does not forbid, even if the knife is בן יומו (ש״ך יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק כ).

8. Recap of the 7 seifim — one line each

SeifSubjectThe essential
א · 1The master rule and the cold-use vessel« כדרך שנשתמש בהן העובד כוכבים כך הוא הכשרן ». Therefore one who buys old utensils that were used cold — cups, צלוחיות and the like — rinses them, and must scour them well in water at the time of rinsing so as to remove and scrape off the issur on their surface, then washes them in water and immerses them: they are permitted. Rama: in some places the custom is to permit putting wine in vessels whose staves are stuck together with fat (חלב), because the nature of wine is to flee from the fat, while the fat congeals and stands on its own and does not touch the wine at all (ריב״ש סימן קמ״ט).
ב · 2Hot-use vessel: הגעלה, then tevilaIf he took from them vessels used with hot — of metal, of wood or of stone — he scalds them (מגעילן), then immerses them if they are metal, and they are permitted. If he immersed them before scalding them, they remain permitted; yesh omrim: he must re-immerse. Rama: for bone vessels see או״ח סימן תנ״א; no הגעלה on a vessel that is בן יומו (Tur); one does not use the הגעלה water (Arokh); scraping with a craftsman's tool does not replace הגעלה (ת״ה סי׳ ק״ל, Mordechai, Hagahot Shaarei Dura); and see above סימן ק״ח on the baker's peel of issur.
ג · 3Where the technique is found« דיני הגעלה וליבון הלא הם כתובים בהלכות פסח » — the Mehaber refers to או״ח סימן תנ״א-תנ״ב. The Shach refers there too and recalls, in the name of the Tur, the order of a הגעלה: one scours the vessel well to remove the rust on it and only then scalds it (ש״ך יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק ג, ס״ק ז).
ד · 4The מחבת requires ליבוןA frying pan, although for Pesach hametz הגעלה suffices for it, requires ליבון for other prohibitions. Reason: for hametz « היתרא קא בלע » (ט״ז ס״ק ג; ש״ך ס״ק ח); the Shach also brings the reason of the Menachem Azaria — a non-Jew's frying pan is generally used without water, with oil — from which it follows that a milk or meat frying pan would likewise require ליבון.
ה · 5הגעלה instead of ליבון; cold useIf he scalded a vessel that required ליבון, it is forbidden to use it hot « אפילו שלא על ידי האש » (we fear it will expel still more into a second-vessel hot — ט״ז ס״ק ד). Rama: cold, by contrast, it is permitted even לכתחילה through הדחה ושפשוף היטב, but only דרך עראי or בדיעבד; for permanent use יש מחמירים require הגעלה or ליבון — « והכי נוהגין ». So too for silver vessels in which wine may have been warmed, and for chests and tables bought from non-Jews (לכתחילה only). And earthenware used cold: since הגעלה is impossible it is deemed בדיעבד and מריקה ושטיפה היטב suffices — and afterwards one may put in it even sharp things such as vinegar (see סימן צ״א).
ו · 6Partial or whole kasheringMetal vessels: although some say that if issur was used in part of it the whole becomes forbidden, since חם מקצתו חם כולו — « אבל לענין הכשרו לא עלה לו הכשר עד שיכשיר כולו », both for הגעלה and for ליבון. Rama: and that is only where he used all of it; but where it is known that he used only part — « כבולעו כך פולטו » (Tur). The Shach: this partial hekhsher is only a בדיעבד (ס״ק י״ח); and the Taz wonders at the Rama for presenting the Tur as though it agreed with the Mehaber's wording (ס״ק ז).
ז · 7The knife bought from a non-JewAn old knife, whether large or small: for cold use, if it has no גומות, he thrusts it ten times into hard ground, each thrust into hard ground and never where he has already thrust (טור בשם הרמ״ה) — and that suffices even to cut a דבר חריף such as a radish. (And to use it permanently is no better than other vessels that are customarily scalded even for cold use.) If it has גומות, or he wishes to cut hot with it or to slaughter with it — he heats it white, or sharpens it well on a smiths' whetstone over its whole surface. Rama: וי״א that sharpening helps only for cold — « והכי נהוג לכתחלה »; and if he cannot do a proper ליבון because of the handle, he does ליבון and then הגעלה; however ליבון without הגעלה, or הגעלה without ליבון where there are no גומות, do not forbid hot food that was cut, even if the knife is בן יומו; and a thorough השחזה followed by הגעלה helps even לכתחילה like a ליבון, if he can clean out the גומות.

⚖ The reflex in 3 questions

  1. Through what did the taste enter? Cold → הדחה ושפשוף. Hot through a liquid → הגעלה. Dry fire → ליבון. Nothing else decides.
  2. What is the vessel made of? Metal, wood, stone → הגעלה. Earthenware → cannot be kashered; used cold, מריקה ושטיפה, deemed בדיעבד.
  3. And the tevila? Metal only, after the hekhsher; if the order is reversed it is valid, but the practice is to re-immerse without a berakha.
