1. שורש האיסור — a Torah verse, or a fear?

↩ Detailed explanation (level 1)

The siman has only two seifim, yet it rests on a question that neither the Mehaber nor the Rama asks: whence does the prohibition draw its force? Two Acharonim answer in two incompatible ways — and one of the two is the Shakh writing under another title.

The Taz’s position: the verse, and nothing else The Taz rests his whole ס״ק א on the verse, and reads it whole:
The Nekudot HaKesef’s position: the fear, with the verse as support The Nekudot HaKesef — that is, the Shakh answering the Taz — overturn the basis:
Ḥakirah: is the prohibition of the feast a Torah prohibition, or a rabbinic safeguard? (א) A Torah prohibition. The verse says “he will call you and you will eat of his sacrifice”; the baraita derives the rule from it, Rava the starting point. The prohibition then rests on the distancing itself, and the motif of idolatry is only an explanation. (ב) A rabbinic safeguard resting on a verse. The real reason is that the non-Jew, gladdened by the Jew’s presence, will go and thank his idol — אזיל ומודי — and the verse is only an אסמכתא. The prohibition then rests on a fear, and follows the regime of fears.
The Nekudot HaKesef’s proof They do not merely assert: they produce a legal argument — lashes are not administered to one who eats at a non-Jew’s feast. Yet a Torah prohibition stated in a verse should in principle expose one to them. Then a textual argument: the baraita itself speaks of “servants of idolatry”, which shows that the object of the fear is idolatry.
Practical consequences Two, and they are the whole siman. (1) Enmity. If the prohibition is of the Torah and bears precisely on distancing, enmity cannot lift it — that is the Taz. If the prohibition is a safeguard against the non-Jew’s giving thanks, then it falls within the class of cases where enmity does permit — that is the Nekudot HaKesef. (2) The severity of doubt. A Torah prohibition is judged strictly in doubt; a rabbinic safeguard is not.
Two texts, two regimes — and the Ba’er Hetev, who abridges the Taz in four entries, does not report the Nekudot HaKesef here. A reader who saw only him would hear only one of the two voices.

📜 The text of the Shulchan Arukh — the two seifim

↩ Detailed explanation (level 1)

2. משעת קריאה — the reach of the invitation, and the Taz’s chiddush

↩ Detailed explanation (level 1)

Rava derives from the words “he will call you” the starting point of the prohibition. The Taz derives far more: he derives from it the nature of what is forbidden — and from that, a case the siman does not mention.

Rava’s derashah, and Rashi
The Taz’s step: not the place, but the invitation
Practical consequence — the chiddush From this the Taz concludes to a case written nowhere: a non-Jew who sends to several Jews something to eat or drink asking them to gather. The place is Jewish; the food is permitted; and yet, says the Taz, הוה קריאה ממש — it is a calling proper, and the prohibition returns. The remedy he indicates is equally clear: let each take his portion home.

It is this chiddush that the Ba’er Hetev records twice — at ס״ק ב and again at ס״ק ד, where he refers back to his own earlier entry:

And seif 2 becomes, on this reading, the counter-proof: what is sent without a summons summons no one, and that is why it is permitted.

3. אדם חשוב — piety, obviousness, or full legal standing?

↩ Detailed explanation (level 1)

The gemara removes Rav Yitzchak from the twelve-month permission in a single phrase: “he is a man of standing”. It does not say why, and neither the Rif nor the Rambam makes anything of it. Three Acharonim explain that silence in three ways, and the three do not arrive at the same place.

The incident, in the gemara
The Beit Yosef’s reading: a measure of piety
The Bach’s reading, as reported by the Shakh: they permit
The Shakh’s reading: it goes without saying
The Taz’s reading: full legal standing
The Taz’s difficulty with the Beit Yosef If it were piety, why would the gemara use that particular turn? The Taz notes that where piety really is at issue, the Talmud says אדם חשוב שאני — the reverse formula. Here it says “Rav Yitzchak is different, for he is a man of standing”, and Rashi explains that the non-Jew rejoices in him: it is therefore not a quality of the man but a fact about his host.
The Shakh’s resolution — without permitting The Shakh follows neither the Bach nor exactly the Beit Yosef. He says the Rif and the Rambam had no need to write the thing because it goes without saying, and he proves it from three other places where the same authors are silent in the same way: siman 113 on cooked food, siman 142 seif 20, and the end of siman 195. The silence is therefore not a permission; it is a habit of drafting.
Practical consequence The Tur gives the workable rule, and the Taz quotes it approvingly: it is not the title that counts but the fact — כל שהאדם יודע שהעובד כוכבים שמח בו אסור מן הדין, and each judges by his own estimate. On the Beit Yosef’s view, a man of standing who accepted would transgress nothing; on the Taz’s, he would; on the Bach’s, there would be no question at all.

4. איבה — the Perishah’s question and the two answers

↩ Detailed explanation (level 1)

The Perishah asks a question of six words, and it produced the two sharpest texts in the siman. She asks whether one may here, as at the end of siman 148, permit so as not to create hostility.

The question
The Taz’s answer: no — and the argument is structural
The Nekudot HaKesef’s answer: yes — and the argument is about the source
Difficulty — are the two answers even about the same thing? They are, and that is what makes them incompatible. The Taz reasons about the object of the commandment: if the Torah wanted distance, then enmity is not an accident of the commandment but its purpose; one cannot therefore use it to annul it. The Nekudot HaKesef reason about the source: if the real reason is אזיל ומודי, then we are in a category where enmity already permits elsewhere, and the verse is only a support.
Practical consequence It is direct: a case where refusal would create real hostility. On the Taz’s view it changes nothing. On the Nekudot HaKesef’s there is room for a consideration. The Ba’er Hetev (ס״ק א) reports the question and the Taz’s answer, and does not join the Nekudot HaKesef to them.
This level sets out a dispute; it does not decide one. On this very point two first-rank Acharonim — one of them the author of the Shakh — contradict each other head-on. A real case goes to a Rav.

5. מסיבה — the Beit Yosef’s inference in the Rambam, and its rejection

↩ Detailed explanation (level 1)

The Beit Yosef does something unusual: he draws a possible permission out of the Rambam, and then refuses it himself. The passage is worth reading for what it shows of a method.

The Rambam’s text
The inference
The rejection
Foundation — what this rejection establishes The Beit Yosef thereby establishes that the criterion is not the company but the place: once one eats in the feast-house, one is in the non-Jew’s company, whatever table one sits at. And the Taz, at ס״ק ב, will add the other half: once one eats by force of his invitation, one is in it too — even outside his house. The two together close the siman on both sides.
Practical consequence A wedding where the Jewish guests would have a separate room and their own service, in the same building. On the inference the Beit Yosef entertains: permitted. On his conclusion: forbidden, אין להקל. And on the Taz’s view the question would not even be put that way, since the invitation suffices.

6. יסוד הסימן — the calling is the prohibition

Three lines to take away. (1) What is forbidden is neither the food nor the place but the invitation — and it is Rava who fixes this, deriving from “he will call you” the starting point. (2) The Taz and the Nekudot HaKesef do not differ over a detail but over the source: a Torah verse, or a support for a safeguard against אזיל ומודי — and from that their disagreement over enmity is born. (3) On the man of standing, the Beit Yosef, the Bach, the Shakh and the Taz give four readings of one silence, and the Tur gives the workable rule: what counts is knowing that the non-Jew rejoices at your coming.
