1. הדין העולה — the line of ruling of the siman

The whole practice of this siman is one sentence: what was said decides, and what was meant decides only afterwards. The first question before an undertaking is therefore never “what did he mean?” but “which words exactly?” — demonstrative, possessive, verb, or species name.
And that is why this siman does not apply itself. The decisive variable is a fact of language: the exact formula, in the exact order, as it was uttered. Nobody recalls his own sentence with that precision — and the siman hangs opposite consequences on it. For application to your situation, consult your Rav.

2. Designation — when the thing is designated, the prohibition travels

Three ways of designating, and all are effective: the demonstrative, their presence before him, and mention of the owner or place. The consequence is the same: the prohibition passes to exchanges, growths and liquids, and — where the seed persists — to growths of growths.
Two reservations for practice. First, the Rosh and Tosafot restrict the prohibition on exchanges to the one who exchanged — the Mehaber follows the Ran, but it is not unanimous. Second, the limit of seif 12 is strict: naming a species is not designating, and nothing then passes. Telling the two apart in a real case requires a Rav.

3. The verb — when the vow bears on an act

The verbal formula narrows the vow: it aims only at those fruits, in the act of eating them. But it does not release everything — the liquids remain forbidden, and the growths become forbidden again as soon as the seed persists, for then he still eats the object itself.
The criterion — זרעו כלה or not — is a question of fact, and does not transpose from an ancient to a modern product by mere analogy. On the liquids, moreover, the Rambam leaves a doubt where the Shulchan Arukh rules. Consult your Rav.

4. Your house or this house — two formulas that cross exactly

The result crosses exactly. “Your house”: sale lifts the prohibition, rebuilding maintains it. “This house”: sale lifts nothing, destruction lifts everything. Two sentences the ear barely distinguishes, with opposite consequences.
And if both are said together — “this house of yours” — the siman reports three positions: both stringencies, the first term, the last term. The Mehaber opens with both stringencies; the Shakh, at ס״ק ט״ו to י״ז, sums up each in a line.
In practice these distinctions are too fine to apply from memory, and they bear on weighty situations — a house, an inheritance, a family member barred from entry. The Shakh himself, on seif 8, concludes with וצ״ע. Ask your Rav.

5. אין אדם משים אל לבו — what the formula does not carry of itself

The Taz introduces here a reasoning practice cannot ignore: the reach of a formula is measured also by what a man ordinarily pictures in saying it. One who forbids his house to another has his lifetime in mind, not after his death — whence, for the Tur, the need to specify בחיי ובמותי.
But the Taz himself concludes that the halakha does not follow this requirement: the Shulchan Arukh does not demand the specification, and “this house” forbids forever. Take the method, then, and not the conclusion — and note that reasoning about “what people ordinarily have in mind” is exactly the kind of argument only a Rav can handle.

6. Taste in a dish — the commonest case, and the most conditioned

The default: a general formula does not reach a dish that has only the taste; a designating or verbal formula does. This is the rule to know, and it settles most cases.
But three layers come on top. (1) The Shakh, at ס״ק כ״ה: if the taste distresses him, we follow his intention and the taste becomes forbidden. (2) The Shakh, at ס״ק כ״ו: where the taste is forbidden, one may rely on a Jew’s tasting, and failing that one measures in sixty — but outside the kind only, for within the kind אפילו באלף לא בטיל. (3) The Pit’hei Teshuva, at ס״ק ד: the pot, נ״ט בר נ״ט, and what was cooked before the vow.
None of these three layers applies from memory: the first requires establishing a state of mind, the second a measure, the third a chain of cooking. This is the siman’s typical case for asking one’s Rav.

7. דבר שיש לו מתירין — the drop, and its limit

The rule is severe and clean: a drop of the vowed wine in a barrel of the same wine forbids the whole barrel, because a vow can always be released. But the Taz at once sets the limit: outside the kind — in vinegar — the rule ceases and nullification applies.
A practical consequence to state plainly: the ordinary solution is the opposite of nullification. Since the vow can be released, one does not seek to dilute — one goes and has the vow released. The Pit’hei Teshuva refers for this rule to siman 102, where it is treated in its own right. Consult your Rav.

8. The moment of the vow — the moment fixes the word’s reach

A rule of general reach, easy to remember: the word catches what it denoted at the moment it was said. What was wine remains wine for the vow, even having become vinegar; what was already vinegar was never aimed at. The same logic as the rebuilt house of seif 4 — the object remains what it was at the time of the vow.
This rule applies most often today, because products change name and state. Knowing what a thing was at the time of the vow is a fact, and it can be established. Ask your Rav.

9. The species name — what the name does not say

The last seif closes the siman with its sharpest rule: we follow the name. Oil is not an olive, wine is not a grape — even where the taste is identical. The Shakh says it in five words:
But adding a verb or a demonstrative overturns everything — and that is exactly what makes the siman unworkable from memory: the same intention, two words apart, two opposite results. The next siman, 217, will add on top the question of local usage. For application to your situation, consult your Rav.

10. Contemporary cases — and the limit of this page

1. A dietary resolution taken upon oneself. “I forbid myself this product” or “I forbid myself to eat of it” — two sentences, two reaches. The first reaches what comes from it, the second stops at the act. The first thing to do is to recall the sentence, not the intention.
2. A dish containing only the taste. Seif 9 gives the default, the Shakh reverses it if the taste is distressing, and the Pit’hei Teshuva adds the question of the pot. Three conditions to check before any conclusion.
3. An undertaking made for someone else. Seif 2 treats it, and the Pit’hei Teshuva at ס״ק א shows the reasoning is not the same as for oneself: the other has no power to release. The question has remained open among the A’haronim.
4. A collective undertaking whose formula names two things. The Rama’s gloss on seif 7 and the Shakh’s ס״ק כ״ב give the rule of reading; the Rabbi Eliya Mizrahi disputes it in the name of usage, and R. Akiva Eiger forbids using it to be lenient. Responsa matter.
This page is a study exposition, not a decision. Three reasons forbid it: the decisive variable is the exact formula, which cannot be reconstructed at a distance; several points of the siman remain open among the A’haronim, the Shakh himself concluding twice with צ״ע; and the next siman will add on top the weight of local usage. For application to your situation, consult your Rav.
