1. The two directions of the vow

First marker, and it governs all of seif 1: does the vow run from him to them, or from them to him? אסר עצמו מהם — he must not benefit from them, so he loses. אסר הנאתו עליהם — they must not benefit from him, so they lose, and their consent is needed.
The reservation אם ישמעו לו is no courtesy formula: it is the vow’s legal limit. A man binds himself; he binds no one else. When the rule requires a loss on the partner’s side, it can only propose it to him.

2. The three kinds of goods, and where the benefit lies

A sale between him and them
▼
Which kind of goods is it?
▼
מציעא — benefit on both sides → correct on both sides
▼
חריפא — buyer’s benefit only → correct on the buying side, even price on the selling side
▼
דרמי באפיה — seller’s benefit only → correct on the selling side, even price on the buying side
▼
Then: who must not benefit? he → he loses · they → they lose, if they consent

3. The six branches of seif 1

One rule generates all six: where there is benefit for the party not entitled to it, shift the price; where there is none for that party, an even price suffices. And the Shakh adds the negative check: an even price is never permitted by default.

4. Lending, and the decree not made

Mind the direction of the comparison: in siman 221, on a vow against one person, the decree does exist — one does not lend lest one borrow. Here it does not. The rule therefore does not carry from one siman to the other without first establishing the reach of the vow.

5. The kohanim, the poor, and the value of the choice

Two regimes, one idea. “The kohanim”: he has nothing to withhold from them, since terumah is worth nothing but in their hands — to forbid it is to reduce it to nothing with him, and they take it. “These kohanim”: he withholds from them the right to be chosen, which has value — טובת הנאה — and the vow holds.

6. Every clause, in the order of the book

Three seifim, sixteen clauses — ten of them in seif 1 alone. The table restores the exact order of the Shulḥan Arukh.

7. The points that require a Rav

Siman 227 is not crossed by great disputes as 226 is; but four points there are decided outside the text, and none settles itself.

1. Buying on credit. The Pitḥei Teshuva reports from the Noda BiYehuda that buying at more does not suffice if the purchase is on credit: the credit is itself a benefit, and one must pay cash. Nothing in the seif foreshadowed it.
2. A vow on the benefit or a vow on the property? The Shakh, in the Ran’s name, shows the two formulas have neither the same reach in time nor the same effects on price. Establishing which was used is the first task.
3. How far does the absence of a decree reach? The Shakh extends it to any whole nation, and confines it to vows not aimed at an individual. The border between “a body” and “many individuals” is not in the text.
4. The vow on one’s own property. The Ran extends the terumah argument to one who forbade himself his own property; the Maharshal sets the limit. The Shakh reports both and concludes with the second.

8. Vocabulary of the siman

TermSense
זבינא מציעאan average sale: the object is worth its price, and both sides benefit
זבינא חריפאsought-after goods, “that dealers jump at”: the benefit is the buyer’s
זבינא דרמי באפיהunsalable goods, “lying on his face”: the benefit is the seller’s
שוה בשוהat an even price — never neutral: permitted only where the bound party gains nothing
אם ישמעו לו“if they listen to him”: the loss asked of the partner cannot be imposed on him
משאילן ומלוהhe lends objects and lends money — they benefit, which his vow does not forbid
גזירהa precautionary decree: forbidding the permitted to protect the forbidden — not made here
טובת הנאהthe value of the right to choose to whom to give an offering
מתנות ענייםthe gifts due to the poor — לקט, שכחה, פאה, מעשר עני
כופין על הצדקהthe court compels on tzedaka, and may distrain to enforce it

9. Recap — to remember

The siman in three questions: which goods? (where the benefit is) · which direction of vow? (who must lose) · does the other consent?
Golden rules. (1) Identify the goods before speaking of the price. (2) An even price is never permitted by default. (3) A vow binds only the one who uttered it: as soon as the loss falls on the other, his consent is needed. (4) Lending and borrowing follow the direction of the vow, and the decree of siman 221 does not carry over here.
Classic pitfalls. (a) Thinking a sale at an even price is always neutral — the Shakh forbids it wherever there is benefit for the bound party. (b) Applying here the decree of siman 221 on lending, which this siman expressly refuses. (c) Confusing the vow on benefit with the vow on property: the latter knows no price that undoes it, but seizes only the present. (d) Reading in seif 3 that טובת הנאה is not property — which is exactly what Rava refuses.
In practice. This page is a study tool, not a ruling. A vow framed “against everyone” is uttered faster than one thinks, and its effects touch everyday trade. Record the exact wording, the direction of the vow, the nature of the transaction at issue — then bring it all to your Rav. And remember the tractate provides another road, in siman 228: dissolution.
