This siman teaches the laws of מודים (the blessing of thanksgiving in the עמידה): one bows at מודים at the beginning and the end (שוחין במודים תחלה וסוף); one who repeats « מודים מודים » is silenced (משתקין אותו), for it resembles two powers; and the individual (יחיד) praying alone does not say the ברכת כהנים. Hebrew text, fluent English translation and explanation of the ג׳ seifim, with a section of practical cases.

Our Sages taught (ברכות ל״ד.): אלו ברכות שאדם שוחה בהן — באבות תחלה וסוף, ובהודאה תחלה וסוף — these are the blessings in which one bows: at אבות at the beginning and the end, and at ההודאה (that is, מודים) at the beginning and the end. The siman gathers the laws particular to מודים: the bowing, the ban on repeating « מודים מודים », and the case of the individual at the ברכת כהנים. We study here at the level of principle; for personal conduct, one refers to the custom and to the ruling of the Rav.

A. The laws of מודים — the ג׳ seifim

מוֹדִים — the blessing of thanksgiving — this is the ברכת ההודאה of the עמידה, in which one thanks Hashem « מודים אנחנו לך ». Three laws concern it: the bowing done at its beginning and its end (as at אבות, סימן קי״ג); the repetition « מודים מודים » that is suppressed (for it has the appearance of two powers, כאומר « שמע שמע »); and the individual (יחיד) who does not say the ברכת כהנים, since it was instituted for the ציבור, corresponding to the נשיאות כפים which occurs only with ten.

Séif 1 — שוחין במודים: bowing at מודים

שוחין במודים תחלה וסוף.
Séif 1: one bows at מודים at the beginning and at the end (תחלה וסוף).
At the two ends of מודים one bows: at the beginning (saying « מודים אנחנו לך ») and at the end (toward the closing « הטוב שמך ולך נאה להודות »). This is one of the בְּרָכוֹת in which bowing is instituted (together with אבות — סימן קי״ג). One straightens up when pronouncing the Name (« ברוך אתה ה׳ »), and does not bow more than needed (until the vertebrae protrude).

Séif 2 — מודים מודים: not repeating

האומר מודים מודים משתקין אותו.
Séif 2: one who says « מודים מודים » — they silence him (משתקין אותו).
Repeating the word « מודים » twice — one silences him, exactly like one who says « שמע שמע » (סימן ס״א). Why? Because the repetition gives the appearance of acknowledging two powers (כשתי רשויות), which is intolerable in a praise addressed to the One. He is therefore stopped, even in the middle of the תפילה.

Séif 3 — יחיד וברכת כהנים: the individual and the priestly blessing

Séif 3: the individual (יחיד) should not say the ברכת כהנים. Rama: and this is the essential view (וכן עיקר), and so it seems right to me to conduct oneself; but the widespread custom is not so — rather, even the individual says it whenever it is fit for the נשיאות כפים; and this (that custom) does not seem correct.
The ברכת כהנים here is the paragraph « אלהינו ואלהי אבותינו ברכנו בברכה המשולשת… ». For the Mehaber, an individual (praying alone, or outside the fitting time) does not say it, since it was instituted in ציבור, corresponding to the נשיאות כפים that requires ten. The Rama upholds the principle (« וכן עיקר »), but notes that the widespread custom is that even the individual says it when the time is fit — a custom he deems not recommended.
The siman in one sentence: at מודים one bows at the beginning and the end; one who repeats « מודים מודים » is silenced (appearance of two powers); and the individual does not say the ברכת כהנים for the Mehaber — the Rama upholding the principle while noting the widespread custom to the contrary.

Practical cases

Case 1 — Where to bow at מודים

Situation: at which moment of מודים does one bow, and how far?
Conduct: one bows at the beginning of מודים (at « מודים אנחנו לך ») and at the end, then straightens up when pronouncing the Name. One does not bow to excess. For the details (the exact posture, the case of מודים דרבנן with the ציבור), one follows one's Rav.

Case 2 — He said « מודים מודים »

Situation: someone, distractedly, repeats « מודים מודים ». How to react?
Conduct: one silences him (משתקין אותו), for the repetition evokes two powers, like « שמע שמע » (סימן ס״א). For the concrete course of action (to continue, to resume), one follows one's Rav.

Case 3 — The individual and the ברכת כהנים

Situation: a person prays alone (or outside the fitting time): does he say « אלהינו ואלהי אבותינו ברכנו… »?
Conduct: for the Mehaber, the יחיד does not say it (instituted in ציבור, corresponding to the נשיאות כפים with ten). The Rama retains this principle as the essential view, but reports the widespread custom in which even the individual says it at the fitting time. In practice, each follows the custom of his community and his Rav.

Comprehension questions

Check your understanding:
  1. At which two moments of מודים does one bow, and whence is it learned (séif 1)?
  2. Why does one silence the one who says « מודים מודים », and what other case does it resemble (séif 2)?
  3. Why does the individual not say the ברכת כהנים according to the Mehaber (séif 3)?
  4. What does the Rama uphold and what does he note about the widespread custom (séif 3)?
  5. What common principle links the bowing at מודים and the ban on « מודים מודים »?
