This siman teaches what may be interrupted between the end of the שמונה עשרה and יהיו לרצון: since יהיו לרצון is part of the Amida, one does not answer קדיש וקדושה between them (אינו פוסק), but after it, before the תחנונים, שפיר דמי; where to place the תחנונים (אלהי נצור) — מיד יאמר יהיו לרצון after the י״ח; and the ד׳ דבריםעשה למען שמך — whose regular reciter מקבל פני שכינה. Hebrew text, fluent English translation and explanation of the ג׳ seifim, with a section of practical cases.

Our Sages instituted saying, after the שמונה עשרה, the verse יהיו לרצון אמרי פי והגיון לבי לפניך ה׳ צורי וגואלי (תהלים י״ט), just as דוד said it after י״ח מזמורים. Since this verse מכלל התפלה הוא — it is part of the Amida — one does not interrupt between it and the י״ח, even to answer קדיש וקדושה. The siman clarifies what is permitted after the verse, where to place the supplications, and the ד׳ דברים at the end. We study here at the level of principle; for personal conduct, one refers to the custom and to the ruling of the Rav.

A. Between the Amida and יהיו לרצון — the ג׳ seifim

יִהְיוּ לְרָצוֹן — a continuation of the Amida — the verse יהיו לרצון said after the eighteen blessings is not an ordinary supplication: מכלל התפלה הוא, it is part of the prayer itself. Hence one does not interrupt between the י״ח and it, whereas after it, between it and the תחנונים (אלהי נצור), interrupting for a דבר שבקדושה is permitted. From this follow three teachings: the interruption, the place of the תחנונים, and the ד׳ דברים.

Séif 1 — the interruption

Séif 1: one who wishes to interrupt to answer קדיש וקדושה between the eighteen blessings and יהיו לרצון — he does not interrupt (אינו פוסק), for יהיו לרצון is part of the prayer (מכלל התפלה הוא); but between יהיו לרצון and the other supplications, it is permitted (שפיר דמי). Hagaha: and this only where the custom is to say יהיו לרצון immediately after the Amida; but where the custom is to say the תחנונים before יהיו לרצון — one also interrupts for קדיש וקדושה. In those places, the custom is to say אלהי נצור before יהיו לרצון, and therefore one also interrupts for קדושה, קדיש and ברכו. However, one accustomed to say the תחנונים after his prayer — if the שליח ציבור has begun his repetition and reached the קדיש or the קדושה — shortens and rises (מקצר ועולה); and if he did not shorten, he may interrupt as one interrupts in a blessing of the ק״ש, even in the middle.
As long as one has not said it, he is still "inside" the Amida — so he does not interrupt, even for a קדיש or a קדושה. After the verse, before the תחנונים, he may answer (שפיר דמי). The Hagaha adds the Ashkenazi minhag: one first says אלהי נצור and the תחנונים, and only then יהיו לרצון; since these תחנונים are merely a custom, one interrupts for a דבר שבקדושה (קדושה, קדיש, ברכו). Ideally, מקצר ועולה — shorten in order to answer in time.

Séif 2 — the place of the

Séif 2: it is not proper to say the תחנונים before יהיו לרצון; rather, after finishing the eighteen blessings one says יהיו לרצון immediately; and if one wishes to say it again a second time after the תחנונים, he is permitted.
Since יהיו לרצון closes the Amida, it is more proper to say it immediately after the eighteen blessings, before adding one's personal supplications. One who follows this practice may nonetheless repeat it a second time after אלהי נצור and the תחנונים — הרשות בידו — closing his prayer once more with this verse. (This is the recommended conduct le-maaseh in many communities: יהיו לרצון once immediately, then again after the תחנונים.)

Séif 3: one who is accustomed to say these four things merits to receive the face of the Shechina (מקבל פני שכינה): "act for Your Name" (עשה למען שמך), "act for Your right hand" (עשה למען ימינך), "act for Your Torah" (עשה למען תורתך), "act for Your holiness" (עשה למען קדושתך).
At the end of the prayer, before stepping back, one adds these four requests that rest not on our merits but on those of Heaven: His Name, His right hand, His Torah, His holiness. The Shulchan Aroukh promises the one who is regular (הרגיל) a great reward: זוכה ומקבל פני שכינה. They are usually said at the end of אלהי נצור, near the second יהיו לרצון and the three steps back.
The siman in one sentence: יהיו לרצון is מכלל התפלה: one does not interrupt between the י״ח and it (even for קדיש וקדושה), but after it, before the תחנונים, שפיר דמי; where אלהי נצור is said before יהיו לרצון (Hagaha), one interrupts even for a דבר שבקדושה, the ideal being מקצר ועולה; after the י״ח one says יהיו לרצון immediately, and may repeat it after the תחנונים; and one who is regular with the ד׳ דברים (עשה למען שמך) מקבל פני שכינה.

Practical cases

Case 1 — Answering קדיש / קדושה after the Amida

Situation: he has finished the eighteen blessings but has not yet said יהיו לרצון, and the צבור says קדיש or קדושה. May he answer?
Conduct: as long as he has not said יהיו לרצון, he is still inside the Amida — אינו פוסק. He first says יהיו לרצון, then answers (שפיר דמי after the verse). But in places where אלהי נצור and the תחנונים are said before יהיו לרצון (Hagaha), he interrupts for a דבר שבקדושה — ideally shortening the תחנונים (מקצר ועולה) to answer in time. For practice, one follows one's Rav.

Case 2 — Where to say אלהי נצור and the תחנונים

Situation: he wishes to add אלהי נצור and personal requests after the Amida. Before or after יהיו לרצון?
Conduct: according to the Mechaber (séif 2), it is more proper to say יהיו לרצון immediately at the end of the י״ח, and then the תחנונים. He may afterwards repeat יהיו לרצון after אלהי נצור (הרשות בידו). The Ashkenazi minhag (Hagaha) places אלהי נצור before יהיו לרצון instead. Each follows the custom of his community and the ruling of his Rav.

Situation: he wishes to strengthen the end of his prayer. What should he say, and what is its merit?
Conduct: he takes on the practice of saying the four requestsעשה למען שמך, עשה למען ימינך, עשה למען תורתך, עשה למען קדושתך — before stepping back. The Shulchan Aroukh (séif 3) teaches that the one who is regular with them They appear at the end of אלהי נצור in most rites; for the exact text and order, one follows one's siddour and one's Rav.

Comprehension questions

Check your understanding:
  1. Why does one not answer קדיש וקדושה between the י״ח and יהיו לרצון (séif 1)?
  2. What is meant by יהיו לרצון מכלל התפלה הוא, and what is permitted after the verse?
  3. According to the Hagaha, why, where אלהי נצור is said before יהיו לרצון, does one interrupt for a דבר שבקדושה?
  4. Where is it more proper to place יהיו לרצון, and may one repeat it (séif 2)?
  5. What are the ד׳ דברים and what reward does the Shulchan Aroukh promise the regular reciter (séif 3)?
