And it contains one seif (סעיף אחד): afterwards, one goes to his affairs (אחר כך ילך לעסקיו), for any Torah that is not accompanied by work will in the end become void and lead to sin (כל תורה שאין עמה מלאכה סופה בטלה וגוררת עון) — poverty would cause a man to lose the knowledge of his Creator. Nevertheless, one does not make his work primary but temporary, and his Torah permanent (לא יעשה מלאכתו עיקר אלא עראי ותורתו קבע), and thus both are sustained. One does business honestly (וישא ויתן באמונה) ; and is careful not to mention the name of Heaven in vain (מלהזכיר שם שמים לבטלה), and not to swear, even truthfully (מלישבע אפילו באמת) — for a thousand cities belonged to King Yannai and all were destroyed because oaths were taken there, even when kept. And one is careful not to partner with a non-Jew (מלהשתתף עם עכו״ם), lest he come to an oath. Rama: some are lenient about partnership nowadays ; and trading with them without partnership is permitted according to all, except on the days of their festivals — see יורה דעה הלכות עבודה זרה סימן קמ״ז.
