This siman teaches with which vessel one washes the hands and how the water must come onto them. One washes only with a vessel (אין נוטלים אלא בכלי) — any vessel is valid — provided it holds a רביעית. The water must come by the force of the one who pours it (כח גברא). Anyone may pour the water (הכל כשרים ליתן מים), and one may also immerse the hands (טבילת ידים). Hebrew text, fluent English translation and explanation of the כ׳ seifim, with a section of practical cases.

After the previous siman (קנ״ח), which teaches when and over what one washes, this siman teaches the how: with which vessel and by what water. Its thread is a single principle — צריך שיבואו המים מכח נותן, that the coming of the water be by human force. We study here at the level of principle; for personal conduct (measures, particular cases, today's tap), one refers to the custom and to the ruling of the Rav.

A. The vessel and the water for netila — the כ׳ seifim

בְּאֵיזֶה כְּלִי נוֹטְלִין — with which vessel one washes — the netila requires a vessel (כלי) that pours the water over the hands, and this water must come by human force (כח גברא). This siman fixes which vessels are valid (all, if they hold a רביעית and keep their status of vessel), how the water must arrive (מכח נותן), who may pour it (הכל כשרים) and the possibility of immersing the hands in place of the netila (טבילת ידים).

Séif 1 — אין נוטלים אלא בכלי · one holding a revi'it

Séif 1: one washes the hands only with a vessel, and all vessels are valid — even a vessel of dung (כלי גללים), of stone (כלי אבנים) or of clay (כלי אדמה) — and it must hold a רביעית. And if it was holed "in the entry of liquid" (כונס משקה) — that is, so that, placed upon a liquid, it would seep in through the hole — it loses its status of vessel and one no longer washes from it, even if it still holds a רביעית below the hole.
The vessel and its measure. The netila requires a vessel (כלי) — of any material — that holds a רביעית (about a quarter of a log). A vessel holed "in the entry of liquid" (ניקב בכונס משקה) has lost its status of vessel: one no longer washes from it. This is the first gader of the siman: without a valid kli, no netila.

Séifim 2-5 — the gedarim of the vessel

Séif 3: a vessel that holds a רביעית only when propped up, but from which the water would spill without a prop, is not a vessel — hence a barrel-stopper (מגופה של חבית), pointed, that does not hold a רביעית unpropped, is not used for netila. Séif 4: an udder-skin and a leather vessel (חמת וכפישה) to which one made a base to sit — one washes from them. Séif 5: a vessel that, from the outset, cannot stand without support and is used only with support — is indeed a vessel
What is a valid "kli". The vessel must hold the water (a רביעית) by itself — an object that holds it only when propped, like a pointed מגופת חבית, is not a kli. But a vessel designed from the outset to be used only with support (a skin, a חמת וכפישה with a base) is a valid kli. All depends on its purpose.

Séif 6 — לא יתן בחפניו: one washes from a vessel

Séif 6: one does not pour water onto his fellow with the hollow of his hands (בחפניו), for one washes only from a vessel (אין נוטלים אלא מן הכלי).
The water comes out of a vessel. One cannot pour the water from one's hands onto those of another: the netila is done only from a kli. (The seif also cites the opinion of Rabbenu Tam, who is lenient in a particular case, and the custom that follows him.)

Séif 7 — כח גברא: the water comes by human force

Séif 7: the water must come by the force of the one who pours it (מכח נותן). Therefore a channel (צינור) where one draws water from the river and pours it in, the water then flowing off to irrigate the field — one cannot put his hands into it so that the water pours over them, because it does not come by human force: the force of the one who poured it has already ceased (שכבר פסק כח השופך).
The central principle of the siman. The netila is valid only if the coming of the water results from human force Water that flows on its own — because it was poured earlier and "the force has ceased" — does not count as netila. All that follows (channel, barrel, tap) flows from this yesod.

Séifim 8-10 — the fixed vessel and the חבית

Séif 8: if he put his hands into a vessel of water and stirred them in it — if the vessel is fixed to the ground (מחובר לקרקע), it is not a valid netila; if it is not fixed, יש אומרים that it is valid and יש אומרים that it is not. Séif 9: a barrel (חבית) with water in it, one places on his knees and washes from it. Séif 10: if one tilted a barrel full of water and went and sat down, and the barrel pours water all day because of its tilting — one who washes from it has a valid netila.
Fixed to the ground, barrel, tilting. A vessel fixed to the ground is problematic (it does not "pour" by hand). But a barrel held, or whose flow comes from a tilting done by a person, remains attached to his initial force — hence a valid netila even if the water keeps flowing afterward. Everywhere one recognizes the same criterion: כח גברא.

Séifim 11-13 — who pours the water, and the כוונה

Séif 11: anyone may pour the water onto the hands — even a deaf-mute, an impaired person and a minor (חרש שוטה וקטן), a non-Jew (עכו״ם) and a nidda. Séif 12: if a monkey (קוף) pours the water onto the hands, יש פוסלים and יש מכשירים — and their words (of the lenient) appear correct. Séif 13: and a priori, the one who washes should intend (יכוין) a netila that renders fit to eat.
The pouring and the intent. The pouring (כח נותן) is valid from anyone — even from those not themselves obligated. It is the one who washes who must, a priori, have the intent (כוונה) of a netila that renders fit to eat. For the monkey, one follows those who validate (with reservation).

Séifim 14-20 — טבילת ידים: immersing the hands

Séif 14: if he immersed his hands in spring water (מי מעיין), even without forty se'ah, the immersion is valid, as long as his hands are covered by it at once. Séif 17: one does not take water from a river with one hand to pour onto the other, for there is here neither netila nor immersion Séif 18: one hand by netila and one hand by immersion — the hands are pure. Séif 19: one who immerses needs neither two times, nor drying, nor to raise the hands. Séif 20: one who immerses does not bless "al tevilat yadaïm" but "al netilat yadaïm".
Immersion in place of pouring. Instead of pouring the water, one may immerse the hands in a spring (מעיין) or a mikvé — the immersion stands in for the netila. One may even do one hand by netila and the other by immersion. The one who immerses need neither repeat, nor dry beforehand — and he still recites the blessing "al netilat yadaïm".
The siman in one sentence: one washes only with a vessel (any vessel is valid, if it holds a רביעית and keeps its status of kli); the water must come by human force (כח גברא, מכח נותן); anyone may pour it (חרש שוטה וקטן, עכו״ם ונדה); and one may also immerse the hands in a spring or a mikvé, blessing "al netilat yadaïm".

Practical cases

Case 1 — Which vessel and what measure

Situation: one has only a chipped cup or a small vessel. Is it valid for the netila?
Conduct: one needs a vessel (כלי) that holds a רביעית and keeps its status of kli: a vessel holed "in the entry of liquid" (ניקב בכונס משקה) is no longer valid. All materials are valid (glass, metal, plastic…). For the exact measure of the רביעית and the borderline cases, one follows one's Rav.

Case 2 — The water by human force

Situation: may one wash under water that flows on its own, or must a person pour it?
Conduct: the water must come by human force Water whose "pourer's force has already ceased" and which flows on its own does not count. That is why pouring from a vessel (or opening a tap by hand) attaches the water to human force. For the application to today's tap and the details, one follows one's Rav.

Case 3 — Who pours the water, and immersion

Situation: may a child pour the water onto my hands? And may one immerse the hands in a mikvé instead of pouring?
Conduct: anyone may pour the water (הכל כשרים ליתן מים לידים) — even a child, provided that the one who washes has the required intent. And one may also immerse the hands in a spring or a mikvé (טבילת ידים): without two times, without drying beforehand, blessing "al netilat yadaïm". For the details, one follows one's Rav.

Comprehension questions

Check your understanding:
  1. Which vessels are valid for the netila, and what measure must they hold (séif 1)?
  2. Why is a pointed מגופת חבית not valid, whereas a skin with a base is (séifim 3-5)?
  3. What does כח גברא mean — that the water must come מכח נותן (séif 7)?
  4. Who may pour the water, and who must have the כוונה (séifim 11, 13)?
  5. How does the טבילת ידים work, and which blessing does one recite (séifim 14, 20)?
