The Siman — Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim siman קס״ב (י׳ סעיפים) · summary, seif by seif
And it contains ten seifim (י׳ סעיפים): one who washes his hands must raise them (להגביה ידיו) — the fingertips (ראשי אצבעותיו) — upward, so that שלא יצאו מים חוץ לפרק ויחזרו ויטמאו את הידים : the water does not flow past the wrist joint, return, and defile the hands. He pours first a little of the revi'it (קצת מהרביעית) to remove dirt and anything that interposes, then a second and a third time to purify the water on the hands ; but if there is no dirt or interposition, he pours על שתי ידיו רביעית בבת אחת — a revi'it over both hands at once — and needs no second waters. One must rub the hands one against the other (לשפשפם זו בזו). אין נטילה לחצאין — there is no washing by halves ; yet one may wash both hands together, for שתיהן נחשבות כיד אחת, they are counted as a single hand. One must take care not to leave a pebble or a splinter (צרור או קיסם) on the hand. And one who has a wound with a bandage (מכה … ורטיה) washes the rest of the hand outside the place of the bandage.

Detail
א׳
raising the hands
✦ להגביה
One raises the fingertips so the water does not flow past the wrist and return to defile the hands ; not so when pouring a revi'it at once.
ב׳
order of pourings & rubbing
two / three pourings
Pour a little to remove the dirt, then a second and a third time ; if there is no dirt, pour a revi'it at once ; and rub the hands זו בזו.
ג׳
washed part of the hand
אין נטילה לחצאין
Washed part, then added the rest — the hand is impure ; but if still טופח על מנת להטפיח, it is pure ; in the first waters.
ד׳
rubbed on the other first
✦ invalid
Poured on one hand and rubbed it on the other — the washing is invalid ; let another pour, or a revi'it at once.
ה׳
both hands as one
as one hand
Wishing to wash both hands together — they count as one hand and do not defile each other ; even four or five.
ו׳
changed mind and joined them
hands impure
Washed each hand alone then joined them for the second waters — the hands are impure ; dry and wash both as one.
ז׳
where one rubs
only where wet
When rubbing the hands together, take care not to touch beyond where the water fell, for they defile each other there.
ח׳
rubbed on the head then touched
impure
Rubbed on the head or a wall then touched that water — impure ; but pouring a revi'it at once leaves no impure water.
ט׳
pebble or splinter
✦ take care
Take care to leave no pebble or splinter on the hand, for the water only purifies the water on the hand itself ; not so with a revi'it at once.
י׳
a wound with a bandage
the rest of the hand
One with a wound and a bandage washes the rest of the hand outside the bandage, taking care not to touch it ; or pours a revi'it at once.

Frequently asked questions — Siman קס״ב
Why must one raise the hands during netila according to Siman 162?
According to the Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim 162:1, הנוטל צריך להגביה ידיו למעלה שלא יצאו מים חוץ לפרק ויחזרו ויטמאו את הידים — one who washes his hands must raise them upward (the fingertips, ראשי אצבעותיו) so that the water does not flow past the wrist joint and return to defile the hands. But if one poured a revi'it over both hands at once (רביעית בפעם אחת), since there is no impure water at all, there is no need to raise the hands.
Must one rub the hands together during netila according to Siman 162?
According to the Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim 162:2 (in the Rama's gloss), הנוטל ידיו צריך לשפשפם זו בזו — one who washes his hands must rub them one against the other, so that the water reaches the entire surface of the hand.
What is the rule that there is no washing by halves (אין נטילה לחצאין) according to Siman 162?
According to the Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim 162:3, נטל מקצת ידו וחזר והוסיף ונטל הנשאר מידו הרי ידו טמאה כמו שהיתה דאין נטילה לחצאין — if one washed part of his hand and then added and washed the rest with the same water, his hand remains impure as it was, since there is no washing by halves. This applies to the מים ראשונים (first waters).
