✦ ❖ ✦

This siman teaches how to break the bread and recite the המוציא: one breaks it at the best-baked spot (בְּצִיעַת הַפַּת), places both hands on the bread, does not break it until salt is brought, and eats at once without speaking (לא ישיח בין ברכה לאכילה) ; then who is the בוצע — the greatest or the host — the order of tasting and distribution, and the principle that one who does not eat cannot exempt the others. Hebrew text, fluent English translation and explanation of the כ׳ seifim, with a section of practical cases.

After treating netilat yadayim (simanim 158-165) and its link to the blessing (166), the Choulhan Aroukh reaches the central act of the meal: breaking the bread and reciting the המוציא. This siman describes everything surrounding that moment — where to break, what size, how to hold the bread, the salt, the prohibition of speaking between the blessing and the food, then, when several are present, who breaks the bread (הבוצע) and in what order one tastes and distributes. We study here at the level of principle; for personal conduct, one refers to the custom and to the ruling of the Rav.

1-3. Practical cases and comprehension questions

A. מקום וזמן הבציעה — where and when to break the bread

בְּצִיעַת הַפַּת — to "break" the bread over which one recites the המוציא. The slice of the breaking (פרוסת הבציעה) is the one the בוצע separates after the blessing to eat and distribute. The whole siman revolves around this act: where to break, what size, how to hold the bread, and — when several are present — who breaks it and in what order.

Séif 1 — במקום שנאפה היטב: the best-baked spot

Séif 1: one breaks the bread at the best-baked spot ; one cuts a little into the slice of the breaking, so that if one grasps the slice, the rest of the loaf rises with it ; one leaves it attached to the bread and begins to bless, and after finishing the blessing one separates it, so that the blessing is completed while the bread is still whole. One does not cut a slice too small, for it looks stingy (כצר עין), nor larger than an egg (מכביצה), for it looks greedy (כרעבתן). Gloss of the Rama: on Shabbat, one does not cut into the loaf before the blessing, so the loaves remain whole ; yet, if one forgot and cut as on a weekday, it does no harm.
The act of breaking. One chooses the best-baked spot (שנאפה היטב). One cuts a little without detaching, blesses on a still-whole bread, and separates it after the blessing. The slice is neither too small (stinginess) nor larger than an egg (greed). On Shabbat, one does not cut before the blessing, keeping the loaves whole (לחם משנה).

B. ברכת המוציא — the blessing on bread

Séif 2 — the formula and the ריוח between לחם and מן

Séif 2: one recites "המוציא לחם מן הארץ." (And if many are seated at the table, they should direct their hearts to hear the blessing and answer amen, and the מברך directs his intent to the amen they say.) One makes a pause (ריוח) between לחם and מן.
The formula. The blessing is המוציא לחם מן הארץ. One makes a slight pause between לחם and מן (ריוח בין לחם ובין מן) so the words do not run together. If many are seated, they listen and answer amen, and the מברך intends to exempt them.

Séif 3 — קודם שיתפוס הלחם: grasping the bread first

Séif 3: one does not bless before grasping the bread.
Hold before blessing. One grasps the bread first, then recites the blessing — so that the blessing falls upon the object already held in hand, ready to be eaten.

Séif 4 — שתי ידים: both hands and the ten fingers

Séif 4: one places both hands on the bread during the blessing, for they have ten fingers corresponding to the ten mitzvot bound up with bread ; and this is why there are ten words in the blessing of the המוציא, ten words in the verse "מצמיח חציר לבהמה," ten in "עיני כל אליך ישברו," ten in "ארץ חטה ושעורה" and ten in "ויתן לך."
Ten fingers, ten mitzvot. One holds the bread with both handsten fingers that recall the ten mitzvot attached to bread (from sowing to challah). The siman also notes the groups of ten words in the blessing and in several verses connected with bread.

C. מלח, אכילה מיד והפסק — salt, eating at once, no interruption

Séif 5 — מלח או ליפתן: salt or a condiment

Séif 5: one does not break the bread until salt or a condiment is brought before him (ליפתן — Rashi: anything eaten with bread) to dip the slice of the breaking in it ; but if the bread is fine (נקייה), or seasoned with spices or salt like ours, or if he intends to eat plain bread, he need not wait. Gloss of the Rama: nevertheless, it is a mitzva to bring salt onto every table before breaking bread, for the table resembles the altar and the eating a sacrifice, and it is said "on all your offerings you shall offer salt" ; and it protects from misfortune.
Salt on the table. Ideally one does not break the bread until salt or a condiment (מלח או ליפתן) is before him, to dip the slice. Our breads, already fine and salted, exempt this ; but the Rama recalls that it is a mitzva to have salt on the table — the table is like the altar (דומה למזבח) — and it protects from misfortune.

Séif 6: one eats immediately and does not speak between the blessing and eating ; and if he spoke, he must repeat the blessing — unless the speech was of the matter concerning what he blesses: for example, if he blessed on the bread and, before eating, said "bring salt or a condiment," "give so-and-so to eat," "give food to the animal" and the like — he need not repeat the blessing.
No interruption. Between the המוציא and the first bite, one says nothing: extraneous speech obliges one to repeat the blessing. The only exception: speech of the immediate need of the meal (asking for salt, having a guest served) is not an interruption. The Rama adds that, lekhatehila, one does not speak at all.

Séif 7 — ראובן ויעקב: netila after another's blessing

Séif 7: Reuven was washing his hands to eat while Yaakov recited the המוציא, intending to exempt those who listen ; and afterward Reuven dried his hands and recited the blessing over netilat yadayim — this is not an interruption: he is exempted by Yaakov's blessing and need not repeat the המוציא.
A measured exception. The blessing over netila (על נטילת ידים), which is itself part of the meal, does not count as an interruption between Yaakov's המוציא and Reuven's food. Reuven is exempted by Yaakov's blessing, for it is of the meal's need.

Séif 8 — שכח ולא בירך: forgetting the blessing

Séif 8: if he forgot and ate without reciting the המוציא — if he recalls during the meal, he blesses ; but if he does not recall until he has finished his meal, he does not bless.
Making it up in time. As long as the meal is before him, the blessing still applies to what he will eat: he blesses. Once the meal is finished, there is nothing left to cover: one does not bless a blessing that has become purposeless.

D. ספק וטעות בנוסח — doubt and a wrong formula

Séif 9: if he is in doubt — did he recite the המוציא or not — he does not bless again.
Doubt over a blessing. The general rule ספק ברכות להקל (in doubt, one refrains from blessing) applies: the המוציא is rabbinic, and one does not repeat it, for fear of a blessing in vain (ברכה לבטלה).

Séif 10 — נוסח אחר: a different formula

Séif 10: if, in place of the blessing of the המוציא, he recited "שהכל נהיה בדברו," or said "בריך רחמנא מלכא מארי דהאי פיתא" (blessed is the Merciful One, King, Master of this bread), he has fulfilled his obligation.
The essence is recognized. The blessing שהכל covers any food, hence bread too bediavad ; and even a formula in Aramaic that mentions "this bread" suffices — for it expresses gratitude to the One who gives bread. The ideal formula remains the המוציא.

E. אחד מברך לכולם — קביעות: one blesses for all

Séif 11 — הסבה וקביעות: the fixity of the meal

Séif 11: if there were two or more, one blesses for all — but only if they reclined (הסבו), which is a manner of fixity (קבע) (or a host with the members of his household, which is like reclining) ; but if they were sitting without reclining, since they are not fixed together, each blesses for himself… And nowadays, when we are not accustomed to recline (הסבה), our sitting at one table, or on one cloth without a table, is a fixity… and for us it only helps if they sat at one table or one cloth.
Fixity makes the group. One may exempt all — but only if the group is fixed (קבע). In the past this was the הסבה (reclining together) ; nowadays, sitting at one table or on one cloth suffices. Without this fixity, each blesses for himself.

Séif 12 — רוכבים: riding and on the move

Séif 12: if they were riding and said "let us eat" — even though each eats from his own loaf, as long as they have not dismounted, they join, since they halted in one place ; but if they were eating while walking, no. And if they were eating in a field, scattered and separated — even though they all eat at one time and from one loaf — since they did not fix a place and eat scattered, they do not join.
One common place. The decisive point is having halted together in one place: on horseback but stationary, they join ; but on the move or scattered in a field, even around one loaf, they form no group. The fixity is of place, not only of time.

Séif 13 — כוונה להוציא: the intent to exempt

Séif 13: where they did not fix a place — the case in which we say that each blesses for himself — if the one who blesses intended to exempt them and they intended to be exempted, they have fulfilled their obligation.
Intent can supply. Even without קביעות, if the two intentions meet — the מברך wishes to exempt and the listeners wish to be exempted — the blessing counts for all. Fixity facilitates, but the mutual intent is the essence of exemption.

F. מי הוא הבוצע וסדר הבציעה — who breaks and the order of tasting

Séif 14 — גדול או בעל הבית: who breaks the bread

Séif 14: if the guests are many, the greatest among them breaks the bread (בוצע). Gloss of the Rama: if they are equal and one of them is a kohen, it is a mitzva to give him precedence ; and if the kohen is an ignorant person (עם הארץ), the talmid hakham precedes him… And if there is a host (בעל הבית) with them, he breaks the bread, even if the guest is greater [and the מברך says first "with the permission of my masters and teachers" — ברשות מורי ורבותי].
The greatest — except at home. As a rule, the greatest (גדול שבכלם) breaks the bread. But at a host's home, it is the host (בעל הבית) who breaks it, even before a greater guest — for he breaks it with a generous hand. Out of courtesy, the בוצע first says "ברשות מורי ורבותי."

Séif 15 — אין המסובין רשאים לטעום: tasting after the בוצע

Séif 15: the guests may not taste until the בוצע has tasted (but it is permitted to give each his portion before he himself eats, and they wait until he eats). And if each eats from his own loaf and they do not all depend on the loaf in the hand of the בוצע, they may taste before. And if it is Shabbat, there must be before the guests the lechem mishneh, apart from what is before the בוצע, and then they may taste before the בוצע.
One waits for the בוצע. Since all are exempted by his blessing and his slice, one does not taste before him — this is the honor of the blessing. Exceptions: when each has his own bread, or on Shabbat when each guest has his lechem mishneh — then they may taste before.

Séif 16 — עד שיכלה אמן: waiting for the amen to end

Séif 16: the בוצע may not break the bread until the amen is completed from the mouths of the majority who answer.
Let the amen finish. The amen is part of the blessing and completes it. The בוצע therefore waits until the majority (רוב העונים) have finished answering before breaking the bread and eating — so the amen still accompanies the blessing, not the act of eating.

Séif 17 — פושט ידו תחלה: the first hand to the dish

Séif 17: the בוצע extends his hand first to the dish to eat ; and if he comes to give honor to one greater than himself, he may.
Priority of the בוצע. Since he recited the blessing, the בוצע begins — he extends his hand first to the dish. He may nevertheless yield the honor to one greater than himself, if he wishes.

Séif 18: the בוצע places a slice before each one, and each takes the slice with his own hand ; the בוצע does not put it into the hand of the one eating, unless he was a mourner (אבל) ["פרשה ציון בידיה" — an allusion to the slice of the המוציא that is placed in the hand at a time of mourning].
Before, not in the hand. The בוצע places the portion before each one, who takes it himself. One puts the slice into the hand only for a mourner (אבל) — a distinguishing sign of mourning, supported by a verse. At an ordinary time it would be a sign of ill omen.

G. המברך שאינו אוכל — one who does not eat

Séif 19 — מי שאינו אוכל: does not exempt adults

Séif 19: one who does not eat cannot recite the blessing of the המוציא to exempt those who eat ; but for children (קטנים) he may bless, even though he does not eat with them, in order to train them in the mitzvot.
One must eat to exempt. The המוציא is a ברכת הנהנין (blessing of enjoyment): only one who eats may recite it for others. Exception: for young children (קטנים), one may bless even without eating, for it is a mitzva of chinuch (to train them).

Séif 20 — אף בשבת: even on Shabbat

Séif 20: even on Shabbat, when one is obligated to eat bread, his fellow does not recite for him the blessing of the המוציא if he does not eat ; and it is only permitted to bless for others without tasting the המוציא of the matza on the first night of Pesach and the blessing of the wine of kiddush, both of the night and of the day. Gloss of the Rama: and one should eat the slice on which he broke bread before eating other bread, so that it is eaten with appetite — and this is out of love of the mitzva (חבוב מצוה).
The only two exceptions. Even the obligation to eat bread on Shabbat does not allow exempting another without eating. The only blessings one may recite for others without tasting are the המוציא of the matza on the first night of Pesach and the wine of kiddush (an obligation, day or night). Finally, one eats the slice of the breaking first, out of חבוב מצוה.
The siman in one sentence: the בציעת הפת wants a proper gesture — breaking at the well-baked spot (שנאפה היטב), holding the bread in both hands for the המוציא, bringing the salt, and eating at once without speaking (לא ישיח בין ברכה לאכילה) ; then, when several are present, the בוצע is the greatest — or the בעל הבית — the guests do not taste before him, and one who does not eat does not exempt adults (except children לחנכם).

Practical cases

Case 1 — How to break the bread

Situation: I make the המוציא on a fine challah. Where and how do I break it, and of what size?
Conduct: one chooses the best-baked spot (שנאפה היטב), cuts a little without detaching, blesses on the still-whole bread, then separates the slice. It is neither too small nor larger than an egg. On Shabbat, one does not cut before the blessing (for the לחם משנה). For the precise custom (a large meal, many guests), one follows one's Rav.

Case 2 — The salt and not interrupting

Situation: after saying the המוציא, may I ask for salt to be brought? And is salt needed on the table?
Conduct: between the המוציא and the first bite, one does not speak ; but saying "bring the salt" is of the meal's need and does not oblige one to repeat the blessing (séif 6). Lekhatehila, it is better to prepare everything beforehand and already have salt on the table — a mitzva (the table is like the altar) that protects from misfortune. For the details, one follows one's Rav.

Case 3 — Who breaks the bread when several are present

Situation: we are several at my table, with a more learned guest. Who recites the המוציא and breaks the bread?
Conduct: as a rule, the greatest breaks the bread (גדול שבכלם בוצע) ; but at your home, it is you, the host (בעל הבית), who breaks it, even before a greater guest — and you say "ברשות מורי ורבותי." The guests do not taste before you (séif 15) and you wait for the end of the amen (séif 16). For a delicate matter of honor, one follows one's Rav.

Comprehension questions

Check your understanding:
  1. At what spot and of what size does one break the slice of the בציעה, and what about Shabbat (séif 1)?
  2. Why does one place both hands on the bread, and what do the ten fingers recall (séif 4)?
  3. May one speak between the המוציא and the first bite, and what is the exception (séif 6)?
  4. Who is the בוצע: the greatest or the host (séif 14)?
  5. Why can one who does not eat not exempt adults, and what may he do for children (séifim 19-20)?
