1. The Central Axiom

Universal principle of Siman קפ״ג:

This siman (י״ב סעיפים) answers one question: how does the one who blesses conduct himself with the cup of birkat hamazon? One thread runs through it: the Gemara says ten things of the cup of blessing (עשרה דברים נאמרו בכוס של ברכה, Berakhot 51a), and the Mechaber puts them into practice. From there the whole conduct: the cup and the wine (rinsing and washing, cru wine, full and whole), the holding (two hands, right, tefach, eyes), the silence, the question, and the duty to bless seated.
