This siman (ז׳ סעיפים) answers a single question: how to honor the cup (כוס) over which Birkat haMazon is recited? One thread runs through it: the cup is an object of kavod. First its existence — three opinions (אפילו ביחיד / for three / not at all), resolved as a מצוה מן המובחר. Then its nature — wine, or failing that חמר מדינה, but never water. Then its integrity — it must not be פגומה (the one drunk from), but anything that is not "drinking" (pouring, a large vat) does not spoil it. Finally its repair — adding wine or water, wine returned to the jug — and the exception of the constraint, where one blesses even on a pagum cup.

The whole siman revolves around the cup of blessing. 📚 The yesod of the pegam: what spoils the cup is the act of drinking directly — צריך שלא יהא פגום שאם שתה ממנו פגמו (קפ״ב:ג) — an act of mius (repugnance). What is not "drinking" does not spoil it: אבל אם שפך ממנו לתוך ידו או כלי אין בכך כלום (קפ״ב:ג). The distinction extends to the vessel drunk from: a small jar or a small barrel become pegumim, but for a large vat אין להקפיד (קפ״ב:ג). And per one opinion, even מים פגומים פסולים למזוג בהם (קפ״ב:ג).

One pours from the cup of blessing into the guests' pagum cups: אם היו כוסות המסובין פגומים צריך לתת מכוס הברכה לתוכם (קפ״ב:ד) ; pagum wine returned to the jug becomes valid again, היין שבקנקן כשר משום דקמא קמא בטיל (קפ״ב:ה) — each drop is nullified at once in the mass ; and one repairs the cup by a simple addition — יכולין לתקן כוס פגום ע״י שיוסיפו מעט יין (קפ״ב:ו), or even water.
