The Siman — Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim siman קפ״ו (ב׳ סעיפים) · summary, seif by seif
And it contains two seifim (ב׳ סעיפים): women (נשים) are obligated in birkat hamazon ; but it is a doubt (ספק) — are they obligated מדאורייתא (by Torah law), and thus fulfill the obligation for men, or only מדרבנן, and thus fulfill only for one whose obligation is likewise Rabbinical. A minor (קטן) is obligated מדרבנן in order to educate him (לחנכו) ; and the teaching « בן מברך לאביו » (a son blesses for his father) applies only when the father did not eat to satiety (כדי שביעה), so that his obligation too is only Rabbinical.

women are obligated

Frequently asked questions — Siman קפ״ו

Are women obligated in birkat hamazon according to Siman 186?

Yes. According to the Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim 186:1, « נשים חייבות בברכת המזון » — women are obligated in birkat hamazon ; but it is a doubt (safek) whether they are so מדאורייתא — and thus fulfill the obligation for men — or only מדרבנן, and thus fulfill it only for one whose obligation is likewise Rabbinical. The source of the doubt is the Gemara « נשים בברכת המזון דאורייתא או דרבנן » (Berakhot 20b).

Can a woman fulfill a man's obligation of Birkat haMazon according to Siman 186?

Because of the doubt (186:1), a woman does not fulfill the obligation of a man whose obligation is certainly מדאורייתא: « ואינן מוציאות אלא למי שאין חיובו אלא מדרבנן » — she fulfills only for one whose obligation is likewise only Rabbinical (for example a man who ate less than כדי שביעה). For practical conduct, one refers to one's Rav.

Is a minor obligated in Birkat haMazon according to Siman 186?

According to the Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim 186:2, « קטן חייב מדרבנן כדי לחנכו » — a minor is obligated Rabbinically in order to educate him ; and the teaching « בן מברך לאביו » (a son blesses for his father) applies « כשלא אכל האב כדי שביעה » — when the father did not eat to satiety, so that his obligation too is only Rabbinical (Berakhot 20b).
