Level 4 — Daat HaRav (Alter Rebbe) — Siman

The Alter Rebbe’s way on אִם מִצְטָרְפִין לְזִמּוּן אִם לָאו : שְׁנַיִם שֶׁאָכְלוּ כְּאַחַת ; קְבִיעוּת הַמּוֹעֶלֶת לְצָרֵף לְזִמּוּן ; הַיּוֹדֵעַ מוֹצִיא אֶת שֶׁאֵינוֹ יוֹדֵעַ ; כַּוָּנָה מִלָּה בְּמִלָּה ; הֲסִבָּה, שֻׁלְחָן אֶחָד וּמַפָּה אַחַת — in the Habad sensibility.

Why a Level 4 devoted to the Alter Rebbe ? The Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch is not a commentary on the Mehaber (מחבר) — it is a complete, self-standing Shulchan Aruch, written by the Alter Rebbe (Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of Habad, disciple of the Maggid (מגיד) of Mezeritch). Its singularity : it combines halakha (הלכה) + טעמי המצוות + inner dimension in one work, and rules with a unique Talmudic rigor.

For Habad, the Alter Rebbe is הפוסק האחרון — his psak is the deciding authority. This page gathers the Rav’s way on siman (Who joins the zimun and who does not), which unfolds in the Rav over ב׳ סְעִיפִים (two seifim) : the case of two men who ate together — unfit for zimun, and a priori each bound to bless for himself — yet where one knows how to bless and the other does not, so that the one who knows acquits the one who does not, provided they established the fixity (kevi’ut) that would have joined three for a zimun ; then the requirement of kavanah on both sides — the listener following word for word, the one blessing intending to acquit him — with a referral to siman 185 on the question of language ; and finally the very definition of that fixity : reclining on the couches, one table, or one cloth in our time.

Source note. The Hebrew text reproduced on this page is the complete, real text of the Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch, Orah Haim siman קצ״גב׳ סְעִיפִים (two seifim) from the Rav’s own hand — per the Kehot edition as digitized on Sefaria (Shulchan Arukh HaRav, Orach Chayim קצ״ג). The Alter Rebbe treats there The second seif breaks off at the marker [חָסֵר] (“missing”) carried by the edition itself : we reproduce it as it stands, adding and completing nothing. The translations are ours. No passage is cited beyond this verifiable text.

The Alter Rebbe’s own text (Sefaria source Shulchan_Arukh_HaRav,_Orach_Chayim.193), followed by our English translation. The siman comprises two seifim (ב׳ סְעִיפִים ; seif k → .193.k).

Whether they join for zimun or not, and it contains two seifim. Two who ate together: if they established themselves with the fixity (kevi’ut) that is effective to join for a zimun of three — although two are not fit for zimun, and therefore each must a priori bless for himself — nevertheless, if one knows how to bless and the second does not, the one who knows blesses and acquits the one who does not know.
And one must concentrate word for word on everything the one blessing says, and the one blessing must intend to acquit him of his obligation.
And as to whether the am haaretz must understand the Holy Tongue, that was explained in siman 185.

What is the fixity (kevi’ut) that joins for zimun? When they reclined on the couches, or sat at one table, or, without a table, on one cloth — in our time, when we do not have reclining (hasiba) — or that they established [missing].

The practical Habad conduct

Points of conduct that follow directly from siman קצ״ג in the sensibility of the Alter Rebbe and Habad — presented at the level of principle, referring to the Rav for the detail of cases.

For the Habad Hassid — Siman

  • ① Seif א. Two men who ate together do not form a zimun: a priori each blesses for himself. But if one knows how to bless and the other does not, the one who knows blesses aloud and acquits the one who does not — and this presupposes that they established themselves with the fixity (kevi’ut) that, at three, would have joined them for a zimun.
  • ① further — kavanah on both sides. The listener must follow word for word everything the one blessing says, and the one blessing must intend to acquit him: there is no acquittal through inattention or by chance. Whether the one who does not know must understand the Holy Tongue the Rav does not decide here — he refers explicitly to siman 185.
  • ② Seif ב. What is that fixity which joins for zimun? Reclining (hasiba) on the couches; or sitting at one table; or, without a table, on one cloth — the form retained in our time, when reclining is no longer practiced.
  • ② further — a gap in the text. Seif ב ends with “or that they established,” followed by the marker [חָסֵר] carried by the edition: the Rav’s continuation has not reached us at this point. We add nothing: for the practical continuation of the definition of kevi’ut, see Levels 1 to 3 of this siman (Mehaber and Rama) and ask your Rav.

⚠ This section presents the Habad conduct grounded in the Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch, siman קצ״ג (the real text reproduced in §1). It does not replace a rabbinic decision for a particular case. For any concrete question — two who ate together, acquitting one who does not know how to bless, the required kevi’ut — consult your Rav, and for Habad, a Habad Rav.
