The Siman — Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim siman קצ״ה (ג׳ סעיפים) · summary, seif by seif
And it contains three seifim (ג׳ סעיפים): having settled the zimun of a single company, the Choulhan Aroukh turns to the opposite question — can two tables become one? The first seif gives the criterion: sight. If some of the diners רואים אלו את אלו, the two companies join, even in two different houses; if not, each makes its own zimun. A shared waiter stands in for sight and joins them — but only if the intention to join existed from the moment they came in. And an opinion recorded by the Mechaber closes the door when a public domain separates the two houses. The second seif treats the mixed case — some inside, some outside — which the leader seated on the threshold unites. The third seif states the condition of every joining: both companies must hear the zimun clearly; and the Rama adds that for the rest of Birkat haMazon each blesses for himself, unless he hears the whole of it.

The main themes of the Siman

רְאִיָּה
seeing one another
If some of them see one another they join for the zimun, and if not they do not (seif 1); and in the mishna: בזמן שמקצתן רואין אלו את אלו (Berakhot 50a).
שַׁמָּשׁ אֶחָד
the shared waiter
If there is one waiter for both, he joins them, provided they came in from the outset intending to join together (seif 1); and in the Gemara: שמש מצרפן (Berakhot 50b).
רְשׁוּת הָרַבִּים מַפְסֶקֶת
a public domain that separates
There is one who says that if a public domain separates the two houses they do not join in any manner (seif 1) — and the words «ויש מי שאומר» show that the Mechaber records it as a single opinion.
מִפְתַּן הַבַּיִת
the threshold of the house
If some ate in the house and some outside it, and the one who blesses sits on the threshold, he joins them (seif 2); and in every joining both must hear the one who blesses (seif 3).

SeifCaseDinDetail
א׳two companies — sight and waiter✦ רואים אלו את אלו — they joinTwo companies eating in one house or in two houses; if some of them see one another they join for the zimun, and if not they do not; and if there is one waiter for both, he joins them, provided they came in from the outset intending to join; and one opinion holds that a separating public domain prevents it in any manner.
ב׳some inside and some outsidethe one on the threshold joins themIf some ate in the house and some outside the house — if the one who blesses sits on the threshold of the house, he joins them.
ג׳hearing the one who blessesthe zimun heard clearlyWherever two companies join, both must hear the words of the one who blesses — the blessing of zimun — clearly; and in the Rama's gloss: for the rest of Birkat haMazon each blesses for himself, and if they want the leader to discharge them they must hear all of it.

Frequently asked questions — Siman קצ״ה

Can two neighbouring tables make a single zimun (Siman 195)?

According to the Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim 195:1, everything turns on sight: « שתי חבורות שאוכלות בבית אחד או בשני בתים » (שו״ע או״ח קצ״ה:א), and « אם מקצתן רואים אלו את אלו מצטרפות לזימון » (שו״ע או״ח קצ״ה:א); otherwise « ואם לאו אינם מצטרפות » (שו״ע או״ח קצ״ה:א). The source is the mishna: « בזמן שמקצתן רואין אלו את אלו » (Berakhot 50a), and when they do not see one another, « אלו מזמנין לעצמן ואלו מזמנין לעצמן » (Berakhot 50a).

Does a waiter serving both tables join them (Siman 195)?

According to the Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim 195:1, yes: « ואם יש שמש אחד לשתיהן הוא מצרפן » (שו״ע או״ח קצ״ה:א), but on one condition — « וכגון שנכנסו מתחלה על דעת להצטרף יחד » (שו״ע או״ח קצ״ה:א). The beraita says the same: « אם יש שמש ביניהם » (Berakhot 50b), « שמש מצרפן » (Berakhot 50b). And the Mechaber records a restrictive opinion: « ויש מי שאומר שאם רשות הרבים מפסקת בין שני הבתים אינם מצטרפין בשום ענין » (שו״ע או״ח קצ״ה:א).

What must the two joined companies hear (Siman 195)?

According to the Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim 195:3, the zimun itself must be heard clearly on both sides: « כל היכא שמצטרפות שתי חבורות צריך שישמעו שתיהן דברי המברך ברכת זימון בביאור » (שו״ע או״ח קצ״ה:ג). The Rama adds: « ובשאר ברכת המזון יברך כל א׳ לעצמו » (רמ״א או״ח קצ״ה:ג); and if they wish the leader to discharge them all, « צריכים שישמעו כל ברכת המזון » (רמ״א או״ח קצ״ה:ג), « דבלא זה לא יצאו כלל » (רמ״א או״ח קצ״ה:ג). summary: the Rambam had already required the same — « והוא שישמעו שתיהן כל דברי המברך בבאור » (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק ה׳ הלכה י״ב).
