1. The Central Axiom

Universal principle of Siman ג׳:

The lowest place of the body remains under the gaze of the King. Siman ג׳ extends the מלא כל הארץ כבודו of the preceding siman as far as conduct in the bathroom: even there, one keeps tsniut, observes an orientation, attends to the cleanliness of the body and to its health (בל תשקצו). The most private conduct becomes an act of kedusha — not despite the lowliness of the place, but precisely by elevating it.
💡 The universal key: holiness does not stop at the door of the lowest place. יהא צנוע בבית הכסא — be modest in the bathroom.
  • Tsniut → do not uncover oneself before sitting, close the door, do not speak
  • Orientation → do not face east-west in the open field; honor the direction of the Mikdash
  • The body → cleanliness, health, do not hold back: בל תשקצו

2. Master table of the 17 seifim

SeifTopicHeart of the ruleFamily
א' התכבדו מכובדים A formula addressed to the angels who accompany a person. Today the practice has been abandoned (ועכשיו לא נהגו לאמרו). Tsniut
ב' יהא צנוע Be modest: do not uncover oneself before sitting; do not go in pairs; do not speak there; close the door (Rama, Or Zarua). Tsniut
ג' משמוש קודם הישיבה If one needs to help open his bodily passages, he does so before sitting and not after (a reason of health — כשפים). Health / cleanliness
ד' מדת הגילוי Uncover only the necessary measure: a tefaḥ behind, two in front; for a woman, a tefaḥ behind and nothing in front. Tsniut
ה' כיוון ההתפנות In the open field without partitions: face south / back to north (or the reverse); between east and west forbidden. Urinating is permitted in any case. Orientation
ו' שינה מזרח־מערב Likewise, do not sleep oriented east-west when one's wife is with him; it is fitting to be careful even when alone. Orientation
ז' מן הצופים ולפנים Where one can see the Har haBayit: do not turn toward the Kodesh; place oneself facing north or south. Orientation
ח' התרחקות בשדה In the field: behind a fence, one may move aside at once; in open ground, withdraw until no longer seen. Tsniut
ט' לא יאנוס עצמו Do not sit down abruptly nor force oneself excessively (a reason of the health of the body). Health
י' לא יקנח ביד ימין Do not wipe with the right hand — the hand of service and of the tefilin; one reserves it for what is honorable. Cleanliness
י"א במה יקנח With what to wipe (ancient cautions of health and כשפים). Today: פוק חזי מאי עמא דבר — follow the widespread, harmless custom. Cleanliness
י"ב צניעות בלילה Keep modesty by night exactly as by day. Tsniut
י"ג לא ישתין מעומד Do not urinate standing (splashes), except in an elevated place or onto loose earth. Cleanliness
י"ד–ט"ז דברים שבצנעה [At the level of principle] Cautions of modesty touching urination and the guarding of the body. At the level of principle; for the practical detail, see Level 4 and consult the Rav. [Intimate, in principle]
י"ז בל תשקצו One who holds back his bodily needs transgresses בל תשקצו: one must not hold back. Health

⚖ The structure of the siman at a glance

Four families: (1) tsniut — modesty of the place, the measure of uncovering, withdrawal, modesty by night (seifim א', ב', ד', ח', י"ב); (2) orientation — east-west, from the Tzofim, sleeping (seifim ה', ו', ז'); (3) cleanliness — the left hand, with what one wipes, not urinating standing (seifim י', י"א, י"ג); (4) health and בל תשקצו — not forcing, not holding back (seifim ג', ט', י"ז). Seifim י"ד–ט"ז, more intimate, are treated at the level of principle only.

📚 The yesod of the siman: seif ב' sets the tone — יהא צנוע בבית הכסא. Where the preceding siman taught that the glory of God fills the whole earth, this one draws the consequence as far as the lowest place: holiness has no threshold it would not cross.

4. Tsniut — holiness in the lowest place

Q: How does one keep modesty even in this place?
🟢 Cover oneself — Do not uncover oneself before being seated; uncover only the necessary measure (seifim ב', ד').
🟢 Close the door, alone — Do not go in pairs; close the door behind oneself משום צניעות (Rama, Or Zarua, seif ב').
🟢 Do not speak — One does not speak there; one carries neither words of Torah nor holy words inside (seif ב').
🟢 Withdraw from sight — In the field, withdraw until no longer seen (seif ח').
🟢 Night as dayיפנה בצניעות בלילה כמו ביום (seif י"ב).

Modesty, an inner quality

The tsniut of Siman ג׳ is not reduced to hiding from others: closing the door even when alone, keeping modesty by night as by day, makes modesty a constant quality of the heart. The lowest place thus becomes the purest test of מלא כל הארץ כבודו: one conducts oneself there with dignity not because one is seen, but because the King is present everywhere.

5. Orientation and cleanliness — overview

#Key questionConductSource
In the open field, which orientation? Face south / back to north (or the reverse); east-west forbidden. Urinating permitted in any case. Seif ה' (B"Y in the name of the Rambam)
Near the Mikdash? From the Tzofim inward, do not face the Kodesh: place oneself to the north or the south. Seif ז'
With which hand to wipe? With the left hand; do not wipe with the right — the hand of service. Seif י'
With what to wipe today? What does no harm, according to the widespread custom: פוק חזי מאי עמא דבר. Seif י"א (Rama)
Urinate standing? To be avoided (splashes), except in an elevated place or onto loose earth. Seif י"ג
📚 The overall logic: orientation honors the kedusha of Eretz Israel and the Mikdash; the left hand reserves the right — the hand of the tefilin and of service — for what is noble (cf. the priority of the right, Siman ב׳); cleanliness of the body prepares a person to stand before his Master.

6. Health and בל תשקצו — the body as instrument of avoda

Q: How does one treat the body at this moment?
🟢 Prepare without forcing — Help oneself before sitting, not after (seif ג').
🟢 Without abruptness — Do not sit down abruptly nor force oneself excessively (seif ט').
🔴 Do not hold back — One who holds back his needs transgresses בל תשקצו (seif י"ז).
🟢 Cleanliness of the body — Attend to nekiut, a prelude to the care of the body before the tefila (cf. siman 92).

The body as instrument of avoda

Care of the body is not an end in itself: the Rambam (Hilkhot Deot ch. 4) teaches that the health of the body is among the ways of Hashem, for one cannot serve while ill. Thus, not forcing oneself (seif ט') and not holding back (seif י"ז, בל תשקצו) are not counsels of hygiene but demands of the avoda: to keep the body sound and clean so that it remains a worthy instrument of the divine service.

7. Golden rules — Memory Aid

The 5 golden rules of Siman ג׳
  • Modest even thereיהא צנוע בבית הכסא: cover oneself, close the door, do not speak.
  • Orientation — no east-west in the open field; do not face the Kodesh near the Mikdash.
  • The left hand — do not wipe with the right hand, reserved for service.
  • Cleanliness — choose what does no harm, follow the custom: פוק חזי מאי עמא דבר.
  • Do not hold backבל תשקצו: the health of the body is a demand of the avoda.

8. Mnemonic — Memory Aid

Acrostic: T-O-L-C-H — the 5 pillars of conduct in the bathroom
  • Tsniut — יהא צנוע, cover oneself, close the door, do not speak.
  • Orientation — no east-west, do not face the Kodesh.
  • Left hand — wipe with the left hand, not the right.
  • Cleanliness — what does no harm, not urinating standing, פוק חזי.
  • Health — do not force, do not hold back, בל תשקצו.
3 foundational principles to memorize:
  • צניעות — modesty in the lowest place, by night as by day (seif י"ב)
  • חשיבות הימין — to reserve the right hand, wiping with the left (seif י')
  • בל תשקצו — not holding back; the body, instrument of service (seif י"ז)

9. Pitfalls to Avoid

❌ Pitfall 1: Believing that holiness stops at the door of the bathroom.
→ False. יהא צנוע בבית הכסא: modesty and dignity are maintained there; one closes the door even when alone, and does not speak.
❌ Pitfall 2: Wiping indifferently with either hand.
→ Seif י': לא יקנח ביד ימין — one reserves the right hand, the hand of service and of the tefilin, and wipes with the left.
❌ Pitfall 3: Neglecting orientation as an outdated detail.
→ Seifim ה' and ז': orientation honors the kedusha of Eretz Israel and the Mikdash. The principle stands; for the modern application, consult the Rav.
❌ Pitfall 4: Holding back "so as not to be disturbed".
→ Seif י"ז: one who holds back his needs transgresses בל תשקצו. The health of the body is part of the service of Hashem.
❌ Pitfall 5: Wishing to rule alone on the intimate questions of seifim י"ד–ט"ז.
→ These points, touching the guarding of the body, are retained at the level of principle. For practical conduct, one studies Level 4 and consults the Rav.
