And it contains nine seifim (ט׳ סעיפים): if the צואה is behind him (מאחריו), he must distance himself ד׳ אמות from the place where the smell ceases (ממקום שכלה הריח) — and even with an illness that prevents him from smelling, he measures those four amot למי שמריח ; before him (מלפניו) he distances himself מלא עיניו, as far as he sees it, even at night or if he is blind ; to his side, כמלאחריו. How far must one distance himself from excrement encountered during the Shema according to Siman 79?
According to the Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim 79:1, if the צואה is behind him (מאחריו) he must distance himself ד׳ אמות from the place where the smell ceases (ממקום שכלה הריח) — and even with an illness so that he cannot smell, he measures those four amot למי שמריח. If it is before him (מלפניו) he distances himself מלא עיניו, as far as he can see it, even at night or if he is blind. And if it is to his side, its ruling is כמלאחריו.
Does a change of domain or a height of ten tefachim help according to Siman 79?
According to the Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim 79:2, if it is in a place high by עשרה טפחים or ten low, or in another room — if it has no smell (אם אין לה ריח) he may read (יכול לקרות), since being in a different domain we apply והיה מחניך קדוש. But if it has a smell, neither a separation (הפסקה) nor a change of domain (שינוי רשות) helps.
Animal excrement and a bad smell (ריח רע) — what is the ruling according to Siman 79?
According to the Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim 79:4-5, צואת כלב וחזיר, if hides (עורות) have been placed in them, one distances from them as from צואת אדם ; otherwise their ruling is like the excrement of cattle. The soft excrement of a donkey returning from the road, and that of a cat, a נמיה and a stinking carcass (נבילה מסרחת) are like human excrement. And according to 79:9, one who passed wind (יצא ממנו רוח מלמטה) is forbidden for words of Torah עד שיכלה הריח.
