Siman ר״ס
סימן ר״ס · כמה דיני הכנסת שבת
Summary & mnemonics for review
📑 Synthesis Plan
1. The central axiom
Honoring Shabbat begins on your body and in your voice.
Siman ר״ס opens the positive section of Hilchot Shabbat (sim. ר״ס – רס״ב). After codifying the prohibitions and their technical frameworks (sim. 252-259), we enter honor (כבוד שבת). The siman sets out the double movement: (1) the individual prepares himself physically (washing, nails, hair); (2) the head of the household verbalizes the transition through the 3 questions in a gentle voice and the command to light. The transition between mundane and sacred is marked both bodily and verbally.

2. The 4 body mitzvot + 4 verbal acts
Body side (Seif Alef)
- 1. רחיצה — entire body in hot water (Rema ideal) or minimum face/hands/feet (Mechaber)
- 2. חפיפת ראש — washing the hair
- 3. גילוח שערות — cutting long hair (Rema)
- 4. גילוח צפרניים — cutting nails according to kabbalistic order
Voice side (Seif Beit)
- 1. עִשַּׂרְתֶּם? — Have you taken maaser?
- 2. עֵרַבְתֶּם? — Have you made the eruv?
- 3. הִפְרַשְׁתֶּם חַלָּה? — Have you separated challah?
- 4. הַדְלִיקוּ אֶת הַנֵּר — Light the candles
3. Hierarchy of cases
| Level | Type | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 1 — ideal | Men's mikvah + entire body in hot water | Strong Chabad/chassidic practice |
| 2 — minimum | Face, hands, feet in hot water | Mechaber |
| 3 — recommended | Cut hair + nails on Friday | Mechaber + Rema |
| 4 — kabbalistic | Order of nails per mnemonic | Rema (Avudraham) |
| 5 — communicational | 3 questions in gentle voice | Mechaber + Tur |
| 6 — final | Command to light | Universal |
| 7 — adapted | In diaspora: skip עשרתם | Tur / Rema |
4. Mnemonic — W-N-Q
W — Washing (רחיצה): wash in hot water. Mikvah or shower. Entire body (ideal) or minimum face/hands/feet.
N — Nails (צפרניים): cut according to mnemonic דבהג״א (left) / בדאג״ה (right). Not on Shabbat itself!
Q — Questions (3 questions at twilight): עשרתם / ערבתם / הפרשתם חלה — in gentle voice, followed by the command הדליקו את הנר.
To memorize: "W-N-Q for siman 260: Washing before Shabbat, Nails by mnemonic, and 3 Questions in a gentle voice."
5. Decision tree
Step 1: Friday afternoon — personal preparation
↓
Mikvah if possible, otherwise hot shower/bath — entire body (ideal) or feet/hands/face (minimum)
↓
Step 2: Cut nails + long hair
↓
For the nails: follow the order דבהג״א (left hand) / בדאג״ה (right hand)
↓
Step 3: Put on Shabbat clothing
↓
Step 4: Near twilight — call the family in a gentle voice
↓
"עשרתם? ערבתם? הפרשתם חלה?" (skip עשרתם in diaspora)
↓
Step 5: "הדליקו את הנר" — light the candles
↓
✓ Shabbat has entered
6. Mechaber vs Rema
| Subject | Mechaber | Rema |
|---|---|---|
| Extent of washing | Face, hands, feet in hot water | Ideal: entire body; minimum identical |
| Long hair | Not explicit | Mitzvah to cut (Or Zarua, Eilu Megalchin) |
| Order of nails | Not explicit | Mnemonic דבהג״א / בדאג״ה (Avudraham, Sefer haMussar) |
| Diaspora and maaser | — | No need to ask עשרתם (Tur) |
| 3 questions | Codifies the 3 + command | No gloss |
7. 5 pitfalls to avoid
Pitfall 1: Washing in cold water (saving time). Wrong — the seif specifies בחמין (hot water). Symbolic of the personal investment for Shabbat.
Pitfall 2: Cutting nails in natural order (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). Risk — the Rema codifies a specific order for kabbalistic reasons. Follow the mnemonic דבהג״א.
Pitfall 3: Cutting nails on Shabbat. Forbidden מדאורייתא — gozez (one of the 39 melachot). Always erev Shabbat (preferably Friday afternoon).
Pitfall 4: Asking family in an authoritarian tone. Wrong — the "לשון רכה" is a constituent element of the mitzvah according to several Acharonim. If one yells or gets angry, the spirit of the seif is lost.
Pitfall 5: Forgetting challah in the list. Note — the original gemara (Shabbat 34a) lists only עשרתם / ערבתם / הדליקו. The Mechaber added חלה. It must be asked in addition.
8. Modern practical cases
| Case | Conduct |
|---|---|
| Men's mikvah Friday | Recommended practice (Rema ideal, Chabad, chassidic) |
| No mikvah — hot shower | Cover entire body (Rema) or minimum face/hands/feet (Mechaber) |
| Cold water only | Do what one can, but prefer to wait for hot water |
| Nails Friday morning | Permitted per order דבהג״א / בדאג״ה |
| Nails on Shabbat | Forbidden (gozez) |
| Long hair | Mitzvah to cut if possible (Rema) |
| 3 questions in diaspora | Skip עשרתם; ask ערבתם and הפרשתם חלה |
| Tone at home | לשון רכה — kind and calm |
| Lighting candles | Woman of the home (ideally); otherwise man |
| Shabbat clothing | Distinct from weekday (sim. רס״ב details) |
9. Final synthesis table
| Element | Detail |
|---|---|
| Topic of siman | Personal and verbal preparations for entering Shabbat |
| Number of seifim | 2 (Mechaber) — 5 + 2 KA (Alter Rebbe) |
| Talmudic source | Shabbat 25b · Shabbat 34a |
| Halachic concepts | רחיצה, חפיפה, גילוח, סדר הצפרניים, לשון רכה, 3 שאלות |
| Modern application | Mikvah, shower, order of nails, family communication |
| Rema's position | Extends washing to entire body; codifies kabbalistic order of nails |
| Chabad practice | Strong mikvah, strict nail order, personal transmission of the questions |
10. The 5 practical commands of Siman ר״ס
For daily conduct
- Wash in hot water on erev Shabbat — entire body (ideal: mikvah) or at least face/hands/feet (Mechaber).
- Cut long hair and nails on erev Shabbat — not on Shabbat (gozez = melacha).
- Follow the kabbalistic order of nails: דבהג״א for the left, בדאג״ה for the right.
- Ask family in gentle voice the 3 questions: maaser (Eretz Yisrael), eruv, challah.
- Command the lighting of the candles — this is the final ritual transition between mundane and sacred.
