1. The central axiom

Honoring Shabbat begins on your body and in your voice.
Siman ר״ס opens the positive section of Hilchot Shabbat (sim. ר״ס – רס״ב). After codifying the prohibitions and their technical frameworks (sim. 252-259), we enter honor (כבוד שבת). The siman sets out the double movement: (1) the individual prepares himself physically (washing, nails, hair); (2) the head of the household verbalizes the transition through the 3 questions in a gentle voice and the command to light. The transition between mundane and sacred is marked both bodily and verbally.

2. The 4 body mitzvot + 4 verbal acts

Body side (Seif Alef)

Voice side (Seif Beit)

3. Hierarchy of cases

5 — communicational3 questions in gentle voiceMechaber + Tur
6 — finalCommand to lightUniversal

4. Mnemonic — W-N-Q

WWashing (רחיצה): wash in hot water. Mikvah or shower. Entire body (ideal) or minimum face/hands/feet.

NNails (צפרניים): cut according to mnemonic דבהג״א (left) / בדאג״ה (right). Not on Shabbat itself!

QQuestions (3 questions at twilight): עשרתם / ערבתם / הפרשתם חלה — in gentle voice, followed by the command הדליקו את הנר.

To memorize: "W-N-Q for siman 260: Washing before Shabbat, Nails by mnemonic, and 3 Questions in a gentle voice."

5. Decision tree

Step 1: Friday afternoon — personal preparation
Mikvah if possible, otherwise hot shower/bath — entire body (ideal) or feet/hands/face (minimum)
Step 2: Cut nails + long hair
For the nails: follow the order דבהג״א (left hand) / בדאג״ה (right hand)
Step 3: Put on Shabbat clothing
Step 4: Near twilight — call the family in a gentle voice
"עשרתם? ערבתם? הפרשתם חלה?" (skip עשרתם in diaspora)
Step 5: "הדליקו את הנר" — light the candles
✓ Shabbat has entered

6. Mechaber vs Rema

SubjectMechaberRema
Extent of washingFace, hands, feet in hot waterIdeal: entire body; minimum identical
Long hairNot explicitMitzvah to cut (Or Zarua, Eilu Megalchin)
Order of nailsNot explicitMnemonic דבהג״א / בדאג״ה (Avudraham, Sefer haMussar)
Diaspora and maaserNo need to ask עשרתם (Tur)
3 questionsCodifies the 3 + commandNo gloss

7. 5 pitfalls to avoid

Pitfall 1: Washing in cold water (saving time). Wrong — the seif specifies בחמין (hot water). Symbolic of the personal investment for Shabbat.
Pitfall 2: Cutting nails in natural order (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). Risk — the Rema codifies a specific order for kabbalistic reasons. Follow the mnemonic דבהג״א.
Pitfall 3: Cutting nails on Shabbat. Forbidden מדאורייתא — gozez (one of the 39 melachot). Always erev Shabbat (preferably Friday afternoon).
Pitfall 4: Asking family in an authoritarian tone. Wrong — the "לשון רכה" is a constituent element of the mitzvah according to several Acharonim. If one yells or gets angry, the spirit of the seif is lost.
Pitfall 5: Forgetting challah in the list. Note — the original gemara (Shabbat 34a) lists only עשרתם / ערבתם / הדליקו. The Mechaber added חלה. It must be asked in addition.

10. The 5 practical commands of Siman ר״ס

For daily conduct

  1. Wash in hot water on erev Shabbat — entire body (ideal: mikvah) or at least face/hands/feet (Mechaber).
  2. Cut long hair and nails on erev Shabbat — not on Shabbat (gozez = melacha).
  3. Follow the kabbalistic order of nails: דבהג״א for the left, בדאג״ה for the right.
  4. Ask family in gentle voice the 3 questions: maaser (Eretz Yisrael), eruv, challah.
  5. Command the lighting of the candles — this is the final ritual transition between mundane and sacred.
