1. The central axiom
Shabbos is not an hour of the day — it is a declaration.
Siman רס״א codes the precise chronology of Shabbos entry. Three structural axes: (1) בין השמשות = halachic doubt (3/4 mil after sunset) where certain acts are forbidden; (2) תוספת שבת = positive mitzvah to anticipate entry (from plag haminchah to sunset); (3) verbal acceptance = act that fixes Shabbos in subjective time. The standard practice of 18 minutes before sunset synthesizes these three axes: one is in full tosefet, before the doubt, and the lighting of the candles + Mizmor seals the acceptance.

2. The 3 time phases
| Phase | Duration | Halachic status | Practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before plag haminchah | All day | Mundane | Shabbos preparations |
| Plag haminchah → sunset | ≈ 1h15 | Tosefet Shabbat possible (Rema) | Acceptance possible (northern summer) |
| Sunset → 13.5 min after | ≈ 13 min | Tosefet recommended | Standard lighting 18 min before sunset |
| Bein hashmashos (3/4 mil) | ≈ 13.5 min | Doubt (sfek chasheicha) | Lighting forbidden (except non-Jew) |
| After stars | — | Definite Shabbos | No more lighting |
3. Hierarchy of cases
| Level | Type | Permitted? |
|---|---|---|
| 1 — ideal | Lighting 40 min before sunset (Yerushalayim/chassidim) | ✓ |
| 2 — standard | Lighting 18 min before sunset | ✓ |
| 3 — anticipation | Accepting Shabbos from plag haminchah (Rema) | ✓ |
| 4 — bediavad | Lighting between sunset and bein hashmashos | ✓ (with haste) |
| 5 — forbidden (Jew) | Lighting during bein hashmashos | ✗ (except non-Jew) |
| 6 — forbidden (all) | Lighting after stars are visible | ✗ |
| 7 — exception | Non-Jew lights for mitzvah during bein hashmashos | ✓ |
4. Mnemonic — B-T-K
B — Bein haShmashos (בין השמשות): twilight, halachic doubt. Duration 3/4 mil ≈ 13.5 min after sunset. Lighting forbidden for a Jew.
T — Tosefet Shabbat (תוספת שבת): mitzvah to anticipate. Min = a few minutes before night; standard = 18 min before sunset; max = plag haminchah.
K — Kabbalah (קבלת שבת): verbal acceptance that fixes Shabbos. Mizmor for woman + lighting; Barchu for man at shul.
To memorize: "B-T-K for siman 261: Bein haShmashos is the doubt, Tosefet is the anticipation, Kabbalah is the verbal acceptance."
5. Decision tree
Step 1: Check sunset in your city (Jewish calendar)
↓
Step 2: Light 18 min before (standard) or earlier (Yerushalayim/chassidim)
↓
Step 3: Recite "Mizmor shir leyom haShabbos" + lighting bracha
↓
Step 4: Verbal acceptance = final. No more mundane acts.
↓
Special cases:
↓
If you did not light in time + you are between sunset and bein hashmashos → light in haste with bracha
↓
If in the midst of bein hashmashos → ask a non-Jew (mitzvah)
↓
If after the stars → too late, light only after havdalah
6. Mechaber vs Rema
| Subject | Mechaber | Rema |
|---|---|---|
| Lighting by non-Jew (Seif Alef) | Permitted during bein hashmashos for mitzvah | + also permitted if Shabbos was accepted 1-2h before sunset |
| Early anticipation (Seif Beit) | "איזה זמן... ודאי יום" | "מפלג המנחה ואילך" — major chidush |
| Natural indicators (Seif Gimel) | No gloss | No gloss |
| Mizmor for women (Seif Daled) | Codifies the principle | No gloss |
7. 5 pitfalls to avoid
Pitfall 1: Lighting after sunset. Very problematic — one is in bein hashmashos (doubt), lighting forbidden lechatchilah. In urgency: light in haste if still before 13 min; otherwise lose the mitzvah.
Pitfall 2: Lighting then doing a mundane act (phone, closing electric fridge). Forbidden — lighting = acceptance. Solution: condition mentally beforehand; but not regular practice.
Pitfall 3: Thinking that "I have 18 minutes after lighting" to finish mundane things. False — the 18 min are before sunset, and lighting = immediate acceptance. No buffer.
Pitfall 4: Asking a non-Jew to light after sunset. Permitted only during bein hashmashos (= up to 13 min after) and for mitzvah or urgent need. After: forbidden.
Pitfall 5: Confusing the lighting time (18 min before) with the end-of-Shabbos time (different — see siman 293). Risk: erroneous calculation that may cause transgression at Shabbos departure.
8. Modern practical cases
| Case | Conduct |
|---|---|
| Standard lighting | 18 min before sunset (local Jewish calendar) |
| Yerushalayim | 40 min before; municipal siren |
| Chassidim (Chabad, Belz) | 40 min before; additional honor |
| Northern summer (Stockholm) | Possibility of accepting from plag haminchah (Rema) |
| Travel: arrival 10 min before Shabbos | Light upon arrival + accept verbally |
| Woman at work until late | Light immediately upon arrival if time remains; otherwise lose mitzvah |
| Lighting between sunset and bein hashmashos | Permitted in haste with bracha; not ideal |
| During bein hashmashos (Jew) | Forbidden. Ask non-Jew if mitzvah. |
| After stars are visible | Too late; lose mitzvah for that week |
| Without calendar (camping) | Sun at top of trees / chickens / ravens |
9. Final summary table
| Element | Detail |
|---|---|
| Subject of siman | The precise time of Shabbos candle lighting |
| Number of seifim | 4 (Mechaber) — 7 + 3 KA (Alter Rebbe) |
| Talmudic source | Shabbos 34a-35b · Yoma 81b · Pesachim 54a |
| Halachic concepts | Bein hashmashos, tosefet Shabbat, plag haminchah, kabbalas Shabbos, amiras Barchu, Mizmor |
| Modern application | 18/22/40 min, Jewish calendar, travel, northern summer, non-Jew |
| Rema's position | Chidush plag haminchah for early anticipation; non-Jew after personal acceptance |
| Chabad practice | 40 min before sunset; follows Geonim on bein hashmashos (≠ Rabbeinu Tam) |
10. The 5 practical directives of Siman רס״א
For daily conduct
- Know the exact time of sunset in your city — reliable Jewish calendar.
- Light 18 min before sunset (standard); 22 min or 40 min according to local custom or chassidic.
- Verbal acceptance is decisive — Mizmor for woman + lighting; Barchu for man at shul.
- Bein hashmashos = forbidden zone for Jew — non-Jew possible for mitzvah. After stars: too late.
- Rema's anticipation (plag haminchah) — useful for northern summer, family emergencies, travel.
