1. The central axiom

Siman רע"ג in one sentence.
"אֵין קִדּוּשׁ אֶלָּא בִּמְקוֹם סְעוּדָה" (Pesachim 101a). The kiddush must be linked spatially to the seudah. The siman codifies the definition of "place" (same house = one place), the cases of change (kiddush + seudah elsewhere = repeat), and the exceptions (be motzi without eating oneself, neighbor by hearing, small snack sufficient for the threshold).

2. The 4 key concepts condensed

ConceptMeaningApplication
אֵין קִדּוּשׁ אֶלָּא בִּמְקוֹם סְעוּדָהRule of Shmuel (Pesachim 101a)Central principle of the siman
מָקוֹם אֶחָד"One place" — same house/roomSpatial definition (seif 1)
לְהוֹצִיא אַחֵרִיםBe motzi others without eating oneselfBPH of kiddush = chovah, not an independent berachah (seif 4)
דַּעַת לֶאֱכוֹל מִיָּד"Kavanah to eat immediately"Condition to fulfill "place of seudah" (Rema s.3)

3. Hierarchy of "places"

Level 1: same room — same place, obviously.
Level 2: room to room (same house) — same place (Mechaber).
Level 3: house to attached sukkah — same place (Hagaha Rema, s.1).
Level 4: house to courtyard, sees the place (machlokes) — generally same place if initial kavanah.
Level 5: house to another house — different places. Repeat kiddush (s.2).

4. Practical decision tree

Q1: Will my kiddush and my seudah be in the same house? → YES: OK (same place).
Q2: Attached sukkah? → OK (Rema).
Q3: House to another house (another building)? → Repeat kiddush (s.2).
Q4: Kiddush without kavanah to eat immediately? → Not yotzei (Rema s.3).
Q5: I want to make kiddush for my family but I am sick and not eating? → Permitted (s.4). But repeat kiddush later at my own seudah.
Q6: Is eating a little enough? → Bread or wine with berachah = yes. Just fruits = no (s.5).

5. What defines the "place of the seudah"

The entire siman רע"ג flows from a single sentence of Shmuel — אֵין קִדּוּשׁ אֶלָּא בִּמְקוֹם סְעוּדָה, "there is no kiddush except at the place of the seudah" (Pesachim 101a). The difficulty is not the principle, which is clear; it is its application: what, exactly, is "one place"? And what must one do there for the "seudah" condition to be fulfilled?

Why is kiddush tied to a place?

Kiddush does not sanctify an abstract cup of wine: it sanctifies the Shabbos seudah. The berachah and the seudah form a unit. If one says kiddush here and eats elsewhere, the link is broken: the kiddush becomes a suspended act, without the seudah it was meant to inaugurate. Hence the requirement of spatial continuity.

The gradation of "place"

Same room — one place, obviously. The standard case.
Room to room in the same house — still "one place" (Mechaber). The eye embraces the whole as a single dwelling; moving from the living room to the dining room does not break the unity.
House to attached sukkah — the Hagaha of the Rema explicitly assimilates this to "room to room": the attached sukkah is an extension of the house.
House to another buildingdifferent places. The kiddush said in one does not cover the seudah taken in the other. It must be repeated.

The borderline case: the דעת — the "blank" kiddush

The second condition is more subtle than the first. It is not enough for the kiddush and the seudah to end up taking place in the same place; one must also, at the time of the kiddush, have the kavanah to eat immediately (דַּעַת לֶאֱכוֹל מִיָּד). The Rema (seif 3) rules: one who says kiddush without this kavanah — "blank", as a detached act — was not yotzei, even if he ended up eating on the spot. The "kiddush-seudah" link is not only geographical: it is also mental. Symmetrically, the threshold of "seudah" is clarified (seif 5): a little bread, or wine with its berachah, suffices to constitute "place of seudah"; just fruits, no.

The fundamental lesson — and the most common mistake. The classic pitfall: making kiddush at shul and going home to eat without repeating it. Shul and home are two buildings — two "places". The kiddush of shul (siman רס"ט) never covered the family seudah. The practical rule holds in two inseparable requirements: one place (same house, attached sukkah included) and kavanah to eat without delay. If one is missing, the kiddush must be redone where the seudah actually takes place.

6. Mnemonic — M.K.S.

MMakom (מקום): place = house. Room to room OK. Building to building = new kiddush.

KKavanah (דעת): kavanah to eat immediately required. Otherwise, not yotzei.

SSnack is enough: bread or wine with berachah. Not fruits.

7. The 4 pitfalls to avoid

Pitfall 1 — Making kiddush in shul, eating at home without repeating. Classic mistake. The shul kiddush does not cover the home seudah (s.2). Always repeat at home.
Pitfall 2 — "Blank" kiddush without eating. Not yotzei (s.3). Must eat immediately or have clear kavanah.
Pitfall 3 — Making kiddush for guests without being yotzei oneself. Permitted (s.4), but the one making it must make kiddush at his seudah later. Mistake: thinking one is also yotzei.
Pitfall 4 — Shabbos candles in one room, seudah in another. Not a problem (s.7) — candles do not have to be at the place of the seudah. But ideally, eat where they shine.

8. Modern practical cases

SituationConduct
Kiddush in dining room, seudah in attached sukkahOK — Rema: "like room to room".
Hotel — kiddush in lobby, seudah in roomDifferent places. Repeat in room.
Sick father — kiddush for family without eatingPermitted. The father repeats kiddush at his own seudah later.
Bris Milah Shabbos morningMohel/Sandak — cup of milah after morning kiddush fulfills "place of seudah". Minhag: give to baby.
Eating Friday night in garden (summer)OK (s.7) — candles not required at place. Principle "candles for oneg".
Sick neighbor hears kiddush through windowYotzei (s.6) if (a) his table set, (b) mutual kavanos, (c) hears distinctly.
Zoom/phone on Shabbos (forbidden!)Outside the siman. No use on Shabbos. But theoretically even if one heard — not a valid "kiddush by hearing".

Halachic yesodKiddush sanctifies the seudah, not abstract wine — hence the mandatory spatial link

10. The 5 practical pesakim of Siman רע"ג

🏠 The rule "kiddush bemakom seudah" — in 5 pesakim

  1. Kiddush + seudah in the same house. Room to room OK. Attached sukkah OK (Rema).
  2. Change of house = repeat kiddush. Shul → home = does not cover (siman 269).
  3. Eat after kiddush, immediately or with kavanah. Otherwise not yotzei (Rema s.3).
  4. Make kiddush for others without eating oneself — permitted if the others eat. Repeat kiddush at one's own seudah.
  5. The threshold for "eating": bread or wine (with berachah). Just fruits insufficient (s.5).
