1. The Central Axiom

Siman רפ"ח in one sentence.
Shabbos is a day of oneg — therefore fasting is forbidden (until midday and beyond). One sole exception: the taanis chalom (fast after a distressing dream) "to tear the heavenly verdict" — but with a compensatory Sunday fast. No collective or personal suffering justifies a fast; but crying out in tefillah is permitted for 4 emergency categories, and the explicit Mi sheBerach for sakanas hayom.

2. The Key Concepts Condensed

ConceptDefinitionApplication
תעניתFastForbidden on Shabbos (except t.c.)
תענית חלוםFast after a frightening dreamPermitted on Shabbos exceptionally
קרע גזר דין"Tearing the verdict"Effect of taanis chalom (Berachos 31b)
עונג שבתObligatory joy (Yeshayahu 58)If eating harms → not eating = oneg
צרהCalamity, sufferingNo Shabbos fast for any tzarah
סכנת היוםImmediate danger of lifeExplicit Mi sheBerach and blessing permitted
עננוFast day prayerAfter tefillah, without chasimah, in Elokai Netzor

3. Hierarchy of Shabbos Fasts

★★★★ Absolute prohibition: fasting for suffering, mourning, calamity — no justification.
★★★ Permitted exceptionally: taanis chalom (frightening dream) — with Sunday compensation.
★★ Special case: one who fasts all week (chassid) — may continue on Shabbos; but not for the common.
★ Paradoxical case: one to whom eating harms — "fasting" on Shabbos = personal oneg, permitted.

4. Decision Tree — What to Do Facing a Frightening Dream on Shabbat?

Q1: Is the dream one of the 3 "classical dreams" (burned Sefer Torah, YK at Neilah, falling teeth)?
↓ No → most today don't fast (MB)
↓ Yes → continue
Q2: Have you seen it 3 times (telas zimnei)?
↓ No → some poskim say not to fast
↓ Yes → continue
Q3: Do you have the physical strength to fast 2 consecutive days (Shabbos + Sunday)?
↓ No → postpone the 2nd fast
↓ Yes → fast on Shabbos (but consult a Rav)
Q4: Say Aneinu after tefillah (without chasimah, in Elokai Netzor).
Q5: Sunday → compensatory fast (unless Chanukah/Purim/YT → postpone).

5. The Heart of the Siman — the Taanis Chalom, the Exception that "Tears the Verdict"

Siman רפ"ח lays down a rule of great clarity — no fast on Shabbos: not for a calamity, not for mourning, not for any צָרָה. Shabbos is עוֹנֶג, and voluntary suffering contradicts it. Yet the siman immediately states one exception, and it is precisely there that its heart lies: the תַּעֲנִית חֲלוֹם, the fast following a distressing dream.

The paradox: if fasting contradicts oneg Shabbos, how can a fast be permitted on that very day? Why not simply postpone to Sunday?
↓ the resolution
The reason: the frightening dream is treated as a sign of a גְּזַר דִּין — a heavenly verdict in progress. The fast acts as immediate teshuvah that "tears the verdict" (Berachos 31b); now a verdict is torn only as long as it is not sealed. Postponing to Sunday would be too late. The fast that very day becomes itself a form of oneg: freeing oneself from anxiety is better than eating.

From this flows the most subtle borderline case of the siman, and the halacha that resolves it: fasting on Shabbos does not extinguish the debt. One who has fasted a taanis chalom must in addition fast a compensatory Sunday fast — not to "tear the verdict" a second time, but to repair having fasted on a Shabbos day. The Shabbos fast itself is a "breach" in the oneg that must be atoned for. It is the only case where a fulfilled mitzvah generates its own compensation.

The principle to take home. The taanis chalom does not weaken the rule "no fasting on Shabbos" — it confirms it. The permission is so narrow that it must be paid for: mandatory Sunday compensation; עֲנֵנוּ said without chasimah, slipped into Elokai Netzor; and — decisive for our generation — most poskim teach that nowadays one no longer fasts for a dream, "because we are no longer experts" in interpreting dreams. The exception remains on paper; in practice, oneg Shabbos almost always prevails.

6. Mnemonic — "6.1.S"

66 hours = midday, absolute limit for not having eaten.

11 sole exception to fasting: taanis chalom.

SSunday = mandatory compensatory fast after t.c.

Mnemonic for the 4 authorized cries in tefillah (F.B.B.I):

FFood shortage (mezonos).

BBesieged city by non-Jews.

BBoat tossed at sea.

IIndividual pursued (or acute illness).

7. Pitfalls to Avoid

Pitfall 1 — Going without food "due to learning/davening" until midday: forbidden (Rema, MB). Force a break to eat.
Pitfall 2 — Imitating R. Yehudah HeChassid (weekly fast): not for the common. Eating on Shabbos is obligatory.
Pitfall 3 — Taanis chalom without good reason: today, most no longer fast ("we are no longer experts"). Borderline case: consult a Rav.
Pitfall 4 — Forgetting the compensatory Sunday fast: obligatory. If Sunday is Chanukah/Purim/YT, postpone — but do not omit.
Pitfall 5 — Reciting Aneinu with chasimah: forbidden on Shabbos. Without chasimah, in Elokai Netzor.
Pitfall 6 — Blowing the shofar for war / catastrophe: forbidden on Shabbos except to gather help, never for collective prayer.

10. The 7 Practical Commandments of Siman רפ"ח

For respectful practice

  1. Do not fast on Shabbos — eat before midday, have 3 seudos.
  2. Respect "personal oneg": if eating harms, do not eat; if crying relieves, cry.
  3. For a frightening dream today: do not fast on Shabbos ("we are no longer experts"); consult a Rav.
  4. If one must fast a taanis chalom: Aneinu without chasimah; compensatory Sunday fast.
  5. No fast for collective suffering — but cries in tefillah authorized for 4 categories.
  6. For a sick person in danger: explicit Mi sheBerach + blessing permitted.
  7. Modify the Shabbos meal time vs. the weekday — to mark the distinction.
