1. The central axiom
Minchah of Shabbat is "eis ratzon" (time of favor) — the "ra'ava de-ra'avin" of the Zohar. We read the Torah (3 olim, 10 pesukim from the following parashah), say Va-ani sefilasi, after the Amidah Tzidkascha tzedek, and between Minchah-Maariv: no shiur but Pirkei Avos in summer / Shir HaMa'alos in winter.
2. Key concepts condensed
| Concept | Definition | Application |
|---|---|---|
| קריאת המנחה | Krias HaTorah at Minchah | 3 olim, 10 pesukim, following parashah |
| עת רצון | Time of favor (Tehillim 69:14) | Kabbalistic moment of Minchah Shabbat |
| ואני תפלתי | "And as for me, my prayer..." | Verse particular to Minchah Shabbat |
| צדקתך צדק | 3 pesukim after Amidah | Recalls passing of Moshe, Yosef, David |
| רעוא דרעוין | "Favor of favors" (Zohar) | Spiritual peak of Shabbat |
| פרקי אבות | Summer: Pesach → Rosh Hashanah | Recited (not formally studied) |
| שיר המעלות | Winter: Bereishis → Pesach | Tehillim 120-134 |
3. Liturgical hierarchy of Minchah of Shabbat
4. Decision tree — Tzidkascha tzedek said or not?
5. The reading of the following parashah — the heart of the siman
The most delicate point of seif א is which portion is read at Minchah. The rule, explicit in the siman, is that we read the beginning of the parashah that will be read the following Shabbat — 3 olim, 10 pesukim — and not the morning's parashah nor, on a Shabbat-Yom Tov, the reading of the chag.
Practical consequence: this is the same portion as that read on Monday and Thursday morning of the coming week. Minchah Shabbat is thus the first of the three "anticipatory" readings of the parashah of the week, and inaugurates the rhythm of study that will lead to the following Shabbat.
6. Mnemonic — "3.10.F"
3 — 3 olim to the Torah (Kohen, Levi, Yisrael).
10 — 10 pesukim of the following parashah.
F — Following (not Yom Tov, not the morning's parashah).
"A.U.V.T.P" liturgical mnemonic:
A — Ashrei
U — Uva le-Tzion
V — Va-ani sefilasi
T — Torah (3×10)
P — Pirkei Avos / Shir HaMa'alos
7. Pitfalls to avoid
8. Modern practical applications
| Situation | Reference | Conduct |
|---|---|---|
| Tefilas Minchah in shul | Seif א | Full liturgy: Ashrei → Uva → Va-ani → Torah 3×10 → Amidah → Tzidkascha |
| Without a minyan | MB ב | No Torah; but Va-ani sefilasi said individually |
| Shabbat-Yom Tov | Seif א | Following parashah (not YT) |
| Chol HaMoed Shabbat | Seif ב | No Tzidkascha |
| Pirkei Avos summer (shul) | Rema ב | One perek/Shabbat; 7 cycles |
| Shir HaMa'alos winter | Rema ב | Tehillim 120-134 (15 ascents) |
| Formal shiur between Minchah and Maariv | Rema ב | Forbidden (Zohar); not a formal rabbinic shiur |
| Bar Mitzvah Minchah | — | Possible but custom = morning |
