1. The central axiom

Siman רצ"ב in one sentence.
Minchah of Shabbat is "eis ratzon" (time of favor) — the "ra'ava de-ra'avin" of the Zohar. We read the Torah (3 olim, 10 pesukim from the following parashah), say Va-ani sefilasi, after the Amidah Tzidkascha tzedek, and between Minchah-Maariv: no shiur but Pirkei Avos in summer / Shir HaMa'alos in winter.

2. Key concepts condensed

פרקי אבותSummer: Pesach → Rosh HashanahRecited (not formally studied)
שיר המעלותWinter: Bereishis → PesachTehillim 120-134

3. Liturgical hierarchy of Minchah of Shabbat

1. Ashrei (Tehillim 145)
2. Uva le-Tzion + Va-ani sefilasi (Tehillim 69:14)
3. Chatzi Kaddish + taking out the Sefer Torah
4. Reading: 3 olim × 10 pesukim of the following parashah
5. Returning the Sefer + Chatzi Kaddish
6. Amidah (7 berachos) + Chazaras HaShatz
7. Tzidkascha tzedek (except on joyous days)
8. Kaddish + Pirkei Avos summer / Shir HaMa'alos winter

4. Decision tree — Tzidkascha tzedek said or not?

Q: Is it a day on which during the week we would say nefilas apayim at Minchah?
↓ Yes → say Tzidkascha tzedek
↓ No → do not say it
List of days on which we do not say Tzidkascha: Rosh Chodesh, Chanukah, Purim, chol hamoed, days of Yom Tov, Erev Pesach, Erev Yom Kippur, Tisha b'Av...

5. The reading of the following parashah — the heart of the siman

The most delicate point of seif א is which portion is read at Minchah. The rule, explicit in the siman, is that we read the beginning of the parashah that will be read the following Shabbat — 3 olim, 10 pesukim — and not the morning's parashah nor, on a Shabbat-Yom Tov, the reading of the chag.

Why not the morning's parashah? It has already been read fully in the morning; re-reading it would be redundant. The Minchah reading anticipates and prepares the coming Shabbat.
Why anticipate the following? The Minchah reading is part of the takanah of Ezra (institution of regular Torah reading): it ensures that no period — including the "gap" between two Shabbasos — remains without contact with the seder ha-parashiyos.
Borderline case — Shabbat-Yom Tov: even when a Yom Tov falls during the week, we read at Minchah the beginning of the following weekly sidra, never the Yom Tov reading. The regularity of the annual cycle takes precedence over the calendar event.

Practical consequence: this is the same portion as that read on Monday and Thursday morning of the coming week. Minchah Shabbat is thus the first of the three "anticipatory" readings of the parashah of the week, and inaugurates the rhythm of study that will lead to the following Shabbat.

6. Mnemonic — "3.10.F"

33 olim to the Torah (Kohen, Levi, Yisrael).

1010 pesukim of the following parashah.

FFollowing (not Yom Tov, not the morning's parashah).

7. Pitfalls to avoid

Pitfall 1 — Reading the parashah of Yom Tov at Minchah Shabbat-YT: wrong. We always read the following parashah (siman seif א explicit).
Pitfall 2 — Omitting Va-ani sefilasi when alone: the MB states that we say it even alone, even without a Sefer Torah. This is an individual halacha.
Pitfall 3 — Saying Tzidkascha on Rosh Chodesh / Chol HaMoed: no — not on days "without nefilas apayim."
Pitfall 4 — Organizing a formal shiur between Minchah and Maariv: forbidden per the Zohar. But reciting Pirkei Avos/Shir HaMa'alos is permitted (recitation, not kove'a midrash).
Pitfall 5 — Doing nothing between Minchah and Maariv: poor use of time. At least Pirkei Avos/Shir HaMa'alos; at best seudah shlishis + zemiros.

  1. Say Va-ani sefilasi — it is "eis ratzon," even when alone.
  2. Krias HaTorah: 3 olim, 10 pesukim of the following parashah.
  3. Tzidkascha tzedek after Amidah — except on joyous days (Rosh Chodesh, chag, etc.).
