1. The central axiom

Siman רצ"ג in one sentence.
At the exit of Shabbat, we delay Maariv in order to "add chol onto kodesh"; the end of Shabbat = 3 small close-together stars; in case of ones for a devar mitzvah, Maariv from plag haminchah and Havdalah (but without candle, without melachah until tzeis). The Rema adds the minhag of Ve-hu rachum + Barchu be-arichus no'am.

2. Key concepts condensed

ConceptDefinitionApplication

ג' כוכבים קטנים3 small close-together starsAstronomical criterion for end of Shabbat
פלג המנחה1¼ hours before sunset (halachic hours)Anticipation possible in case of ones

אריכות נועםLong melodyFor Barchu Maariv motzaei Shabbat

3. Hierarchy of Shabbat's end

1. Shkiah (sunset) — Shabbat still continues
↓ about 15-30 min
2. Tzeis ha-kochavim (3 small stars) — halachic end of Shabbat
↓ + niggunim / Maariv / Havdalah
3. Rabbeinu Tam ideal: ≈ 72 min after shkiah — strict

4. Decision tree — Case of ones for devar mitzvah

Q1: Is there a case of ones for a devar mitzvah?
↓ No → wait for tzeis normally
↓ Yes → continue
Q2: Are we after plag haminchah?
↓ No → wait for plag
↓ Yes → continue
Q3: Say Maariv of motzaei Shabbat + Havdalah immediately.
Q4: Do not say borei meorei ha-eish on the candle.
Q5: Do not do melachah until tzeis ha-kochavim.

5. The paradox of the ones case — davening Maariv without closing Shabbat

The heart of the siman, treated in seif ג, is an apparently contradictory situation: one recites the Maariv of motzaei Shabbat — thus a tefillah of a weekday — and makes Havdalah, even though Shabbat has not halachically ended. This is permitted only for a devar mitzvah (a bris, an urgent trip for a mitzvah), and only after plag haminchah.

The key to unraveling the paradox: one must distinguish two planes. Tefillah and verbal Havdalah belong to the domain of speech and liturgical time — this can be anticipated from plag haminchah (a principle already accepted for weekday Maariv). But the objective status of the day — the melachah prohibition — does not depend on the tefillah: it ceases only at tzeis ha-kochavim.

Hence the two limiting consequences of seif ג, which are the true fine points:

This siman thus teaches a methodological lesson: anticipating the liturgy is not anticipating the halachic reality of time. The two can — exceptionally — diverge.

6. Mnemonic — "3 · K · R"

33 stars small and close together.

KKetanim (small) — not the planets of early evening.

RRetzufim (close together) — concentration, not dispersion.

"3 restrictions in case of ones (seif ג):

MMaariv + Havdalah anticipated: permitted.

NNer (candle): no berachah.

MMelachah: forbidden until tzeis.

7. Pitfalls to avoid

Pitfall 1 — Deciding Shabbat ends at shkiah: wrong. Shabbat continues 15-30 min after shkiah until tzeis ha-kochavim.
Pitfall 2 — Doing melachah right after plag haminchah in case of ones: no. Even anticipating Maariv, melachah remains forbidden until tzeis.
Pitfall 3 — Blessing on the candle in case of ones before tzeis: forbidden. Borei meorei ha-eish requires real darkness.
Pitfall 4 — Confusing planets (Venus) and stars: Venus = large evening star, appears early. We wait for the small stars, later.
Pitfall 5 — Ignoring the Ashkenazi minhag of Ve-hu rachum / prolonged Barchu: codified source (Rema, Or Zarua). To preserve in an Ashkenazi shul.
Pitfall 6 — Singing "Elohim Yechonenu" on motzaei Tisha b'Av: we don't say mizmorim of chaninah then. Know the exception.

8. Modern practical applications

SituationReferenceConduct
Maariv time in shulSeif א≈ 10-15 min after tzeis; some wait for Rabbeinu Tam
Cloudy daySeif בWait longer, especially in a covered winter
Bris Milah or urgent travelSeif גMaariv + Havdalah from plag; no candle; no melachah until tzeis
Summer: Shabbat ends at 10pm+Seif בWait nonetheless. No leniency
Travel by planeFollow the local time where one finds himself at the end
Tisha b'Av on motzaei ShabbatMB on seif אNo chaninah songs; don't say "Elohim Yechonenu"
Yom Tov on motzaei ShabbatMB on seif אSame — no ordinary mizmorim
Woman at home wants to start cooking earlySeif בForbidden before tzeis. Even at home.

10. The 5 practical commandments of Siman רצ"ג

For Maariv motzaei Shabbat

  1. Delay Maariv beyond tzeis ha-kochavim — add chol onto kodesh.
  2. 3 small close-together stars = end of Shabbat; cloudy day: wait more.
  3. No melachah before tzeis, even at home.
  4. Case of ones for devar mitzvah: Maariv + Havdalah from plag haminchah; but no candle, no melachah until tzeis.
  5. Ashkenazim: Ve-hu rachum + Barchu prolonged; "Elohim Yechonenu" zemiros before (except Tisha b'Av, YT).
