1. The central axiom
At the exit of Shabbat, we delay Maariv in order to "add chol onto kodesh"; the end of Shabbat = 3 small close-together stars; in case of ones for a devar mitzvah, Maariv from plag haminchah and Havdalah (but without candle, without melachah until tzeis). The Rema adds the minhag of Ve-hu rachum + Barchu be-arichus no'am.
2. Key concepts condensed
| Concept | Definition | Application |
|---|---|---|
| תוספת שבת | Add mundane time onto the holy | At entry and exit |
| ג' כוכבים קטנים | 3 small close-together stars | Astronomical criterion for end of Shabbat |
| פלג המנחה | 1¼ hours before sunset (halachic hours) | Anticipation possible in case of ones |
| דבר מצוה | Mitzvah action | Justifies anticipation |
| תחום שבת | Limit of 2000 amos | Case of ones type seif ג |
| והוא רחום | Verse from Tehillim 78:38 | Recited before Barchu (Ashkenazi minhag) |
| אריכות נועם | Long melody | For Barchu Maariv motzaei Shabbat |
3. Hierarchy of Shabbat's end
4. Decision tree — Case of ones for devar mitzvah
5. The paradox of the ones case — davening Maariv without closing Shabbat
The heart of the siman, treated in seif ג, is an apparently contradictory situation: one recites the Maariv of motzaei Shabbat — thus a tefillah of a weekday — and makes Havdalah, even though Shabbat has not halachically ended. This is permitted only for a devar mitzvah (a bris, an urgent trip for a mitzvah), and only after plag haminchah.
Hence the two limiting consequences of seif ג, which are the true fine points:
- No borei meorei ha-eish on the candle. This berachah requires real darkness so that one benefits from the light; but it is still light. So one says the Havdalah text without the berachah on fire — Havdalah "amputated" of its ner.
- Melachah forbidden until tzeis. Having said Havdalah does not permit work: as long as the 3 stars are not out, Shabbat still weighs with all its objective force. We have davened the future, but we have not shortened the present.
This siman thus teaches a methodological lesson: anticipating the liturgy is not anticipating the halachic reality of time. The two can — exceptionally — diverge.
6. Mnemonic — "3 · K · R"
3 — 3 stars small and close together.
K — Ketanim (small) — not the planets of early evening.
R — Retzufim (close together) — concentration, not dispersion.
"3 restrictions in case of ones (seif ג):
M — Maariv + Havdalah anticipated: permitted.
N — Ner (candle): no berachah.
M — Melachah: forbidden until tzeis.
7. Pitfalls to avoid
8. Modern practical applications
| Situation | Reference | Conduct |
|---|---|---|
| Maariv time in shul | Seif א | ≈ 10-15 min after tzeis; some wait for Rabbeinu Tam |
| Cloudy day | Seif ב | Wait longer, especially in a covered winter |
| Bris Milah or urgent travel | Seif ג | Maariv + Havdalah from plag; no candle; no melachah until tzeis |
| Summer: Shabbat ends at 10pm+ | Seif ב | Wait nonetheless. No leniency |
| Travel by plane | — | Follow the local time where one finds himself at the end |
| Tisha b'Av on motzaei Shabbat | MB on seif א | No chaninah songs; don't say "Elohim Yechonenu" |
| Yom Tov on motzaei Shabbat | MB on seif א | Same — no ordinary mizmorim |
| Woman at home wants to start cooking early | Seif ב | Forbidden before tzeis. Even at home. |

10. The 5 practical commandments of Siman רצ"ג
For Maariv motzaei Shabbat
- Delay Maariv beyond tzeis ha-kochavim — add chol onto kodesh.
- 3 small close-together stars = end of Shabbat; cloudy day: wait more.
- No melachah before tzeis, even at home.
- Case of ones for devar mitzvah: Maariv + Havdalah from plag haminchah; but no candle, no melachah until tzeis.
- Ashkenazim: Ve-hu rachum + Barchu prolonged; "Elohim Yechonenu" zemiros before (except Tisha b'Av, YT).
