1. The central axiom

Siman רצ"ד in one sentence.
One says havdalah in the 4th berachah of the Amidah of Maariv of motzaei Shabbat ("Atah Chonantanu" within Atta chonen ha-da'as). If forgotten with a cup available: no going back (havdalah on the cup makes up for it). Without a cup at all or for tomorrow: repeat. Tisha b'Av on Sunday: no going back. Optional stringency permitted after the entire tefillah only.

2. Key concepts condensed

הבדלה על הכוס2nd havdalah — on the cupMake-up for the 1st when forgotten
טעם קודםTasted before havdalah on the cupMust repeat the tefillah
תשעה באב באחד בשבת9 Av on SundayException (havdalah Sunday night)

3. Hierarchy of forgetting cases

Case A: Forgot + cup available + has not yet tasted → do not repeat
Case B: Forgot + tasted before havdalah on the cup → repeat the tefillah
Case C: Forgot + no cup tonight or tomorrow → repeat the tefillah
Case D: Tisha b'Av on Sunday → no repeating (havdalah Sunday night)

4. Decision tree — What to do if forgotten?

Q1: Am I still in the berachah "Atta chonen"?
↓ Yes → go back and add Atah Chonantanu
↓ No, I finished the berachah → next (seif ד)
Q2: Will I have a cup for havdalah (tonight or tomorrow)?
↓ Yes → continue tefillah without going back
↓ No → repeat the entire tefillah
Q3: Special case Tisha b'Av Sunday?
↓ Yes → continue without going back (havdalah Sunday night)
Q4: If one tasted before havdalah on the cup — repeat the tefillah.

5. The two havdalos — why forgetting is not always made up

The entire mechanism of the siman rests on a fact often overlooked: there are two distinct havdalos of different rank. The first is Atah Chonantanu, inserted in the 4th berachah of the Amidah ("Chonen ha-da'as"). The second is havdalah on the cup. To understand their articulation is to understand why the same forgetting sometimes results in "no going back" and sometimes in "repeat the entire tefillah".

Principle: the fundamental obligation to mention havdalah is one. The tefillah and the cup are two possible locations to fulfill it — not two cumulative obligations.
Hence the rule of seif א: if one forgot Atah Chonantanu but a cup is available, one does not go back — since havdalah on the cup will fulfill the obligation anyway. Going back would be a berachah le-vatalah.
Hence the reverse rule (seif ב): without a cup tonight or tomorrow, tefillah is the only remaining vehicle. Forgetting then has no safety net — one must repeat the Amidah.
The revealing edge case — the "ta'am": one who forgot Atah Chonantanu was counting on the cup. But if one tastes (eats or drinks) before having made havdalah on the cup, one has transgressed the prohibition of eating before havdalah (siman 299) and compromised this second havdalah. The net gave way: one must repeat the tefillah. It is precisely because the two havdalos are only one obligation that the failure of one revives the demand of the other.

Consequence: the optional stringency of redoing the entire Amidah "for safety" is only permitted after having entirely completed the tefillah — never mid-stream, where it would create unnecessary berachos.

6. Mnemonic — "4.K.S"

44th berachah (Chonen ha-Da'as).

KKos (cup): if available → no going back; if not → repeat.

SSiyum tefillah: permits the stringency (redo everything).

Mnemonic "A.O.G.T.A" of the 5 seifim:

AAtah Chonantanu (location) + rule of "no going back" + case of "ta'am"

O — Total Oversight without cup → repeat

G — Tisha b'Av (Guet'a be-Av) → no going back

TTail end of the berachah → no going back even before next berachah

AAfter tefillah → stringency permitted

7. Pitfalls to avoid

Pitfall 1 — Repeating the entire tefillah when forgotten with cup available: berachah le-vatalah. If one has a cup, havdalah on the cup suffices.
Pitfall 2 — Continuing without repeating when one has no cup: error. If no cup tonight or tomorrow, one must repeat.
Pitfall 3 — Tasting before havdalah on the cup: forbidden + one loses the 2nd havdalah. Must repeat the tefillah.
Pitfall 4 — Going back to Atta chonen after completing it: too late, even if not begun Re'eh be-onyeinu (seif ד).
Pitfall 5 — Wanting to redo entire tefillah "for stringency" mid-way: forbidden (berachah le-vatalah). Only if entire tefillah is finished.

8. Modern practical cases

SituationReferenceConduct
Forgot + cup planned at homeSeif אContinue tefillah; havdalah on the cup at home
Forgot + no cup at allSeif בRepeat the tefillah — true "chazara"
Tasted water before havdalahMB (divided opinions)According to poskim: water alone = not real tasting; but other foods → repeat
Tisha b'Av Sunday, forgotSeif גContinue; havdalah Sunday night at end of fast
Bar mitzvah, first shabbosLearn Atah Chonantanu well. If forgotten: follow standard rules.
Woman at home, does not davenNo havdalah in tefillah. Havdalah on the cup only.
Forgot + no wine but grape juiceNot a case of "no cup" — grape juice = halachic wine. Continue.
Wants to be stringent after entire tefillahSeif הPermitted — redo the Amidah for havdalah

10. The 5 practical commandments of Siman רצ"ד

For havdalah in tefillah

  1. Say Atah Chonantanu in the 4th berachah of the Amidah of Maariv of motzaei Shabbat.
  2. If forgotten + cup available: continue tefillah; havdalah on the cup makes up for it.
  3. If forgotten + no cup: repeat the entire tefillah.
  4. Do not taste before havdalah on the cup — invalidates.
  5. Optional stringency of redoing the tefillah: only after having entirely completed it.
