1. The Central Axiom
Motzei Shabbos is an "in-between": before Havdala, it is forbidden to eat, drink (except water) and do melakhah. If one said Atah Chonantanu in the tefilla, melakhah becomes permitted. Otherwise, one says "Ha-Mavdil bein ha-kodesh le-chol" without a berakha. Window for tashlumin: wine + Havdala until Tuesday night; ner + besamim only motzei Shabbos itself.
2. Key Concepts in Brief
| Concept | Definition | Application |
|---|---|---|
| משתחשך | From nightfall | Beginning of the restrictions |
| חוץ ממים | Except water | Only drink permitted before Havdala |
| פורס מפה | "Spreads a cloth" | Interrupting a meal for Havdala |
| המבדיל בין הקודש לחול | Abbreviated formula | Without a berakha → permits melakhah |
| סוף יום ג' | End of the 3rd day (Tuesday night) | Final cutoff for wine + Havdala |
| פוטר יין שבתוך המזון | "Exempts the wine within the meal" | Havdala at the table covers the berakha |
3. Hierarchy of Prohibitions Before Havdala
4. Decision Tree — What May I Do Before Havdala?
5. Releasing Melakhah Without Closing Shabbos
The heart of the siman is a distinction often confused: "being able to do melakhah" and "having said Havdala" are two separate things. After tzeis ha-kokhavim, three prohibitions apply — eating, drinking (except water), doing melakhah. But melakhah is released independently of Havdala on the kos, by a simple utterance.
From this flows the last nuance of the siman: the windows for tashlumin are not the same. Havdala on wine (with "Ha-Mavdil") can be made up until Tuesday night — the end of the 3rd day, still attached to the departing Shabbos. But the berakhos of the ner and besamim are said only on motzei Shabbos itself: past that evening, they are lost. The siman thus teaches that closing Shabbos is not a single instant but a process at several levels.
6. Mnemonic — "E.D.M"
E — Eating: forbidden
D — Drinking (except water): forbidden
M — Melakhah: forbidden (unless Atah Chonantanu or Ha-Mavdil was said)
Windows for tashlumin:
3 — 3 days for wine + Havdala (until Tuesday night)
1 — 1 evening only for ner + besamim (motzei Shabbos itself)
7. Pitfalls to Avoid
8. Modern Practical Cases
| Situation | Reference | Practice |
|---|---|---|
| Intense thirst between tzeis and Havdala | Se'if א | Drink water only |
| Seudah Shlishis extending past tzeis | Se'if א | Continue (first opinion, minhag) |
| Urgent need to use phone after tzeis | Se'if י | Say Atah Chonantanu then use. Or "Ha-Mavdil bein ha-kodesh le-chol" |
| Turning on the light at home | Se'if י (Rama) | Common leniency after Barekhu; lekhatchila Atah Chonantanu first |
| Totally forgot, Sunday evening | Se'if ו | Make wine + Havdala only |
| Forgot, Tuesday afternoon | Se'if ו | Still make wine + Havdala before tzeis on Tuesday night |
| Wednesday: too late | — | Lost. Consult a Rav regarding teshuvah |
| Woman at home who needs to cook | Se'if י (Rama) | Say "Ha-Mavdil bein ha-kodesh le-chol" |
9. Final Synthesis Table
| Element | Detail |
|---|---|
| Subject | Prohibitions before Havdala |
| Number of se'ifim | 10 |
| Mishnah Berurah | 40 entries |
| Talmudic source | Pesachim 102b–107a |
| Prohibitions | Eating, drinking (except water), melakhah |
| Permission via Atah Chonantanu | Melakhah OK, but not eating |
| Permission b'shaas ha-d'chak | "Ha-Mavdil bein ha-kodesh le-chol" without a berakha → melakhah |
| Tashlumin wine + Havdala | Until Tuesday night |
| Tashlumin ner + besamim | Motzei Shabbos only |
| Ate by mistake | Havdala still possible afterwards |
10. The 5 Practical Commandments of Siman רצ״ט
For motzei Shabbos before Havdala
- Do not eat or drink (except water) before Havdala.
- Say Atah Chonantanu in Maariv — releases melakhah before Havdala on the kos.
- Otherwise, b'shaas ha-d'chak: say "Ha-Mavdil bein ha-kodesh le-chol" without a berakha.
- Women: learn the abbreviated formula in order to be able to cook / light.
- If forgotten: wine + Havdala until Tuesday night; ner + besamim lost if not motzei.
