1. The Central Axiom

Siman ש"ג in one sentence.
27 seifim and one great gezeirah: שמא תשלפם להראותם לחבירתה — "Lest she remove her jewelry to show to a friend and then carry it four amos in the reshus harabim." The whole siman discusses: which jewelry falls under this gezeirah? Which escapes (well secured / integrated / not relevant for tevilah)? Then seif 18 — the heart of the siman — permits the current minhag of women under the double rubric of "no reshus harabim today" + "jewelry is common during the week."

2. Condensed Key Concepts

ConceptDefinitionApplication
תכשיטJewelry, adornmentPermitted in principle — but subject to the gezeirah
שמא תשלפם להראותםThe great gezeirahSource: Shabbos 57a-65a (Bameh Ishah Yotzeah)
תפור / קלוע / קבועSewn / braided / embeddedNullifies the gezeirah
שעת טבילהTime of immersionDecisive test: will she remove the object?
צובעDyeingMelachah — forbids makeup (seif 25)
גוזזShearing / pulling outMelachah — forbids combing (seif 27)

3. Hierarchy of Cases

1. Jewelry well sewn/integrated into clothing → permitted (tevilah not relevant).
2. Removable jewelry, but "common" and worn even on weekdays → permitted (Rama, seif 18).
3. Removable jewelry, in karmelis (modern street without 600,000 inhabitants) → permitted (Mechaber, seif 18).
4. Tight jewelry she will remove for tevilah → gezeirah applies → forbidden except via seif 18.
5. Makeup, comb, brushing → absolute prohibition (tzovea, gozez) — no seif 18.

4. Decision Tree

Q1: Is it jewelry (necklace, bracelet, ring, earring)?
Q2: Is it well secured / integrated into clothing?
If YES → permitted (all opinions).
If NO → invoke seif 18: today jewelry is common + street = karmelis → permitted.
Q3: Is it makeup, a comb, a brush? → FORBIDDEN, with no recourse to seif 18.

5. The Heart of the Siman: the Double היתר of Seif 18

Twenty-six seifim discuss which jewelry falls under the gezeirah שמא תשלפם להראותם. But a troubling question arises: if the gezeirah is so broad, how is it that women have in fact been going out adorned on Shabbos for centuries? Seif 18 is the pivot that answers — and it does so through two distinct justifications, which must be carefully kept apart.

Justification A — there is no true reshus harabim anymore (Mechaber)

The gezeirah was decreed only because of concern for Torah-level carrying of four amos in a reshus harabim. But the biblical reshus harabim requires, according to many Rishonim, passage of 600,000 people — a condition our streets do not meet. Our streets are therefore karmelis. Carrying there is itself rabbinic: to forbid the jewelry out of concern for such carrying would be erecting a gezeirah upon a gezeirah, which is not done. The jewelry becomes permitted again.

Justification B — jewelry has become "common" (Rama)

The gezeirah assumed rare and precious jewelry, of which a woman would be proud to remove and display. Today, following Tosefos, the adornments are widespread and worn during the week as well: a woman has no particular reason to take them off in the street to show them. The motive of the gezeirah having lapsed, the prohibition lapses with it.

The edge case — where seif 18 saves nothing. The double heter covers only the hotzaah issue. It has no effect on prohibitions that have nothing to do with carrying: makeup remains forbidden (צובע, seif 25), combing remains forbidden (גוזז, seif 27). Likewise, neither justification covers a real reshus harabim de'oraisa should one exist. Remember: seif 18 neutralizes the gezeirah; it abolishes no melachah.

Nafka mina of the two paths: Justification A depends on the definition of reshus harabim — fragile for those who require fewer than 600,000, or in a very populous city. Justification B depends on customs — it holds as long as jewelry remains ordinary. The Shulchan Aruch HaRav, cautious, combines the two so the heter holds even if one branch were to give way (developed in Level 4).

6. Mnemonic "תשלפ"ם"

תTachshit (תכשיט) — it is jewelry; in principle permitted.

שShema (שמא) — the great concern: "lest she…"

לLehar'os (להראות) — to show the jewelry to a friend.

פPatur (פטור) — if well fastened → exempt from the gezeirah.

Mishtanah (משתנה) — today jewelry is common → seif 18 → permitted.

7. Pitfalls to Avoid

Pitfall 1 — Makeup on Shabbos: lipstick, eye-shadow, foundation = tzovea, the melachah of dyeing. Absolute prohibition. Solution: long-lasting makeup applied before Shabbos; transparent non-coloring powder.
Pitfall 2 — Comb on Shabbos: any comb pulls out hairs = gozez (pesik reisha). Solution: special Shabbos brush (soft bristles), or simply use the finger/hand.
Pitfall 3 — Making braids: braiding or unbraiding hair = boneh / soser (construction of the hairstyle). Prepare the hairstyle before Shabbos.
Pitfall 4 — Very luxurious jewelry: per the Taz, even with seif 18, an exceptional piece (unique diamond) remains suspect. Case-by-case — ask the Rav.
Pitfall 5 — Hairpiece / extension: permitted if well fastened (seif 14); some contemporary poskim restrict sheitels depending on use.

8. Contemporary Practical Cases

10. The Practical Mitzvos of Siman ש"ג

For the shomeres-Shabbos woman — the checklist

  1. Prepare makeup before Shabbos (long-lasting).
  2. Prepare hair before Shabbos (stable hairstyle).
  3. Ordinary jewelry — permitted on Shabbos without issue (seif 18).
  4. Very precious jewelry — verify it holds well; ask the Rav.
  5. Shabbos brush — use a special soft-bristle brush, or the finger.
  6. No comb, no braids done on Shabbos, no new part.
  7. Hairpieces / sheitels — permitted if already styled and ready to wear.
  8. For halachah lema'aseh — consult one's Rav for specific cases.
