1. The Central Axiom
Siman שמ"ו in one sentence.
Not all carrying is on the same level. By the Torah, only transferring reshus hayachid ↔ reshus harabim and carrying 4 amos in the reshus harabim are forbidden. By the Chachamim: anything involving a karmelis or a large karpef. The makom petur is permitted — but it does not "break" an act of carrying: passing through it from house to street makes one liable.

By the Chachamim: anything involving a karmelis or a large karpef. The makom petur is permitted — but it does not "break" an act of carrying: passing through it from house to street makes one liable.
2. The Three Levels of Carrying
| Level | Case | Status |
|---|---|---|
| By the Torah | reshus hayachid ↔ reshus harabim (take out, bring in, throw, extend); 4 amos in the reshus harabim | Forbidden d'oraysa |
| By the Chachamim | Any carrying involving a karmelis; 4 amos in a karmelis; karpef > beis sa'asayim | Forbidden mid'rabanan |
| Exempt | Transferring to/from a makom petur | Permitted |
3. The Four Modes of Transfer
| Mode | Definition |
|---|---|
| מוֹצִיא | Taking an object out of the reshus hayachid into the reshus harabim |
| מַכְנִיס | Bringing in from the reshus harabim into the reshus hayachid |
| זוֹרֵק | Throwing the object from one domain to another through the air |
| מוֹשִׁיט | Extending the hand: the body in one domain, extending the object to the other |
4. Decision Tree
Q1: Is the transfer between a reshus hayachid and a reshus harabim?
↓ YES → forbidden by the Torah
Q2: Is it carrying 4 amos in the reshus harabim?
↓ YES → forbidden by the Torah
Q3: Does the transfer involve a karmelis (or a large karpef)?
↓ YES → forbidden by the Chachamim
Q4: Is it placing/taking in a makom petur?
↓ YES → permitted — unless the object merely "passes through" without resting there
→ At the slightest doubt → consult your Rav.
5. The makom petur — bridge, not break
| Situation | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Placing an object in the makom petur, then taking it back to reshus hayachid or reshus harabim | Permitted |
| Carrying from reshus hayachid to reshus harabim by way of the makom petur, without setting it down | Liable — by the Torah |
| Standing in the makom petur and passing an object from reshus harabim to reshus hayachid | Forbidden |
| Transferring via a makom petur between two karmelis areas | Dispute: some forbid, some permit |
6. Mnemonic מַעֲבָר
מ — מָה אֲסוּר דְּאוֹרַיְתָא: by the Torah, only the reshus hayachid↔reshus harabim transfer and 4 amos in the reshus harabim.
ע — עָשׂוּ חֲכָמִים סְיָג: the Chachamim added the karmelis and the large karpef — forbidden mid'rabanan.
ב — בִּמְקוֹם פְּטוּר: to and from a makom petur, the transfer is permitted.
ר — רֶצֶף הַהוֹצָאָה: but passing "through" a makom petur does not break the act of carrying — one remains liable.
7. Pitfalls to Avoid
Pitfall 1: Believing that a makom petur "neutralizes" all carrying. It does not break a reshus hayachid→reshus harabim transfer that passes through it without stopping.
Pitfall 2: Confusing karmelis and makom petur. The karmelis is forbidden mid'rabanan; the makom petur is permitted.
Pitfall 3: Using a makom petur as a human "relay" between reshus harabim and reshus hayachid — forbidden.
Pitfall 4: Ruling on your own about the transfer between two karmelis areas via a makom petur — it is an open dispute; consult your Rav.
8. Practical Cases
| Situation | Analysis | Conduct |
|---|---|---|
| Taking an object out of the house into the street | reshus hayachid → reshus harabim | Forbidden (Torah) |
| Carrying an object more than 4 amos on the beach | Karmelis | Forbidden (Chachamim) |
| Setting down then taking an object back on a post | Makom petur | Permitted in itself |
| Passing an object house→street through a post | Continuous carrying | Liable |
| Large fenced uninhabited area | Karpef > beis sa'asayim | Carrying limited to 4 amos |
9. Final Summary Table
| Element | Detail |
|---|---|
| Topic of the siman | The three levels of carrying and the role of the makom petur |
| Number of seifim | 3 |
| Mishnah Berurah | 31 entries |
| Talmudic source | שבת ב ע"א (משנת יציאות השבת); שבת ו, ח |
| Golden rule | The makom petur is a bridge, never a break |
| Practical decision | Identify the domains of origin and destination; consult your Rav |
10. The Practical Directives of Siman שמ"ו
For daily conduct
- Identify the domains of origin and destination before any carrying.
- Remember the three levels: Torah (reshus hayachid↔reshus harabim, 4 amos reshus harabim), Chachamim (karmelis), permitted (makom petur).
- Do not use a makom petur as a relay to link the house to the street.
- A karpef larger than beis sa'asayim not used for dwelling: carrying limited to 4 amos.
- In case of doubt or a borderline case — consult your Rav.
- In-depth pilpul — Level 2; Chabad shitah — Level 4.
