1. The central axiom
Siman 353 in one sentence.
A ziz — a board or cornice projecting above reshus harabim, more than 10 tefachim high — is not reshus harabim. Two principles govern it: delimitation (a ziz of 4×4 becomes "a reshus unto itself" that neutralizes its neighbors) and prevention (one places upon it only breakable objects, lest a fall lead to a forbidden act of carrying).

2. The key concepts condensed
| Concept | Definition | Application |
|---|---|---|
| זִיז | Board/cornice projecting from the wall | Above reshus harabim |
| לְמַעְלָה מֵעֲשָׂרָה | Above 10 tefachim | The ziz is no longer reshus harabim |
| ד' עַל ד' | A surface of 4×4 tefachim | Makes the ziz "a reshus unto itself" |
| כֵּלִים נִשְׁבָּרִים | Breakable vessels | Only these permitted on an exposed ziz |
| עֵרוּב | Union of the reshuyos | Required to throw between two houses |
3. Two principles: reshus and falling
Principle 1 — delimitation: a ziz of 4×4 is "a reshus unto itself." Two such overlapping zizin, of two owners, prohibit one another.
↓
Principle 2 — prevention: on a ziz exposed to reshus harabim, one places only breakable objects — so that a fall does not lead to carrying.
↓
Exceptions: a wide support like a roof (on which one stands), or a ziz above a karmelis → all objects permitted.
4. Decision tree
Q1: Is the ziz above 10 tefachim and connected to the house (window)?
↓ YES
Q2: Does another ziz of 4×4, of another owner, overlap it?
↓ YES → they prohibit one another; NO → one may use it
Q3: Is the support narrow (ziz) and above reshus harabim?
↓ YES → only breakable objects
→ Wide support (roof), or above a karmelis → all objects permitted.
5. Overlapping zizin
| Configuration (two owners) | Rule |
|---|---|
| Both zizin have 4×4 | Each "a reshus unto itself" → they prohibit one another |
| Neither has 4×4 | One uses both and the whole wall up to the lowest 10 tefachim |
| The lower has 4×4, the upper does not | The upper is usable only opposite the window |
6. Mnemonic זִיז
ז — זִיז ד' עַל ד': a ziz of 4×4 is "a reshus unto itself"; two such overlapping zizin prohibit one another.
י — יוֹתֵר מֵעֲשָׂרָה: above 10 tefachim, the ziz is no longer reshus harabim; two roofs of equal height — one may throw from one to the other.
ז — זְהִירוּת בַּכֵּלִים: caution with the vessels — only breakable objects (except a wide support or a karmelis).
7. Pitfalls to avoid
Pitfall 1: Believing that a ziz above 10 can hold anything. On a ziz exposed to reshus harabim, only breakable objects are permitted.
Pitfall 2: Forgetting that two overlapping zizin of 4×4, of two owners, neutralize one another.
Pitfall 3: Throwing between two houses of unequal height — forbidden (except breakable objects) due to the risk of falling into reshus harabim.
Pitfall 4: Applying the breakable-objects restriction to a wide roof terrace — the Rama lifts it when one stands oneself on the support.
8. Practical cases
| Situation | Analysis | Conduct |
|---|---|---|
| Two roofs facing each other, equal height, eruv | Above 10 | Throwing permitted |
| Roofs of unequal height | Risk of falling | Breakable objects only |
| Balcony (ziz) with window, no neighboring ziz of 4×4 | Reshus connected to the house | Use permitted |
| Narrow windowsill above the street | Exposed ziz | Breakable objects only |
| Wide roof terrace / ziz above a karmelis | No fall concern / no decree | All objects permitted |
9. Final summary table
| Element | Detail |
|---|---|
| Topic of the siman | The use of zizin (projections) above reshus harabim |
| Number of seifim | 3 |
| Mishnah Berurah | 16 entries |
| Talmudic source | שבת ה ע"א ; עירובין צט ע"ב |
| Golden rule | Delimitation (4×4 = its own reshus) + prevention (breakable objects) |
| Practical ruling | Measure the ziz, check the neighbors and the nature of the object |
10. The practical directives of Siman 353
For daily conduct
- A ziz above 10, connected to the house: usable if it is not neutralized by a neighboring ziz of 4×4.
- Two overlapping zizin of 4×4 (two owners): they prohibit one another.
- On a ziz exposed to reshus harabim: place only breakable objects.
- A wide roof terrace or a ziz above a karmelis: all objects permitted.
