1. The Central Axiom

Siman ש״ג in one sentence.
The 27 seifim distinguish several categories: adornment, garment, or burden; concern that an item may be removed to show, may fall, or may be removed for tevilah; and, in seifim 9-10, cases where an object is a burden that can entail liability for a korban chatas. Seif 18 records several opinions and arguments defending the contemporary minhag; it is not an automatic permission for every item of jewelry.

2. Condensed Key Concepts

ConceptDefinitionApplication
תכשיטJewelry, adornmentPermitted in principle — but subject to the gezeirah
שמא תשלפם להראותםThe great gezeirahSource: Shabbos 57a-65a (Bameh Ishah Yotzeah)
תפור / קלוע / קבועSewn / braided / securedMay remove a particular concern in its case; not a universal rule
שעת טבילהTime of immersionDecisive test: will she remove the object?
צובעDyeingMelachah — forbids makeup (seif 25)
גוזזShearing / pulling outMelachah — forbids combing (seif 27)

3. Hierarchy of Cases

1. First identify whether the item is a garment, adornment, or burden. Secure attachment permits only where the relevant seif says so and no other concern remains.
↓
2. For removable jewelry, seif 18 records opinions and arguments defending the minhag, including the Rama's point about jewelry commonly worn on weekdays.
↓
3. The domain's status and the definition of reshus harabim are disputed; one may not automatically classify every modern street as karmelis.
↓
4. Concerns of tevilah, falling, and removal to show are distinct. Preserve the exact reason of each seif.
↓
5. Makeup and a comb → forbidden (tzovea, gozez). Slight arranging of hair is permitted only under the Mishnah Berurah's precise conditions.

4. Decision Tree

Q1: Is it jewelry (necklace, bracelet, ring, earring)?
↓
Q2: Is it well secured / integrated into clothing?
↓
If YES → still check the specific reason in the seif; attachment alone does not permit according to every opinion.
↓
If NO → do not derive an automatic permission from seif 18; apply the followed ruling, the domain's status, and the exact case.
↓
Q3: Is it makeup or a comb? → FORBIDDEN, with no recourse to seif 18. For arranging hair, apply the Mishnah Berurah's precise conditions.

5. The Heart of the Siman: Opinions and Justifications in Seif 18

Twenty-six seifim discuss which jewelry falls under the gezeirah שמא תשלפם להראותם. But a troubling question arises: if the gezeirah is so broad, how is it that women have in fact been going out adorned on Shabbos for centuries? Seif 18 is the pivot that answers — and it does so through two distinct justifications, which must be carefully kept apart.

Argument A — no complete reshus harabim according to certain views

The Mechaber records that some defended the minhag by relying on the last opinion concerning a non-eruv courtyard and on the premise that in their time there was no complete reshus harabim. This defense therefore depends on particular views; it does not turn every modern street into karmelis or every piece of jewelry into a permitted item.

Justification B — jewelry has become "common" (Rama)

The Rama records another reason for leniency: jewelry that became common and is worn on weekdays raises less concern that it will be removed to show. This is a justification recorded for the minhag, not a general repeal of every prohibition in the siman.

Limits of seif 18. The recorded arguments address defined categories and abolish no melachah. By themselves they do not permit a pierced needle or a signet ring classified as a burden for a woman; seif 18 separately discusses a possible reclassification based on current usage. Makeup and combing involve still other prohibitions.

Nafka mina: the two arguments rest on different premises. The Shulchan Aruch HaRav records them, but concludes that each person should be stringent according to the second opinion presented, while in a case of need one may rely on the first; he does not present their combination as a universal permission.

6. Mnemonic "תשלפ״ם"

ת — Tachshit (תכשיט) — it is jewelry; in principle permitted.

ש — Shema (שמא) — the great concern: "lest she…"

ל — Lehar'os (להראות) — to show the jewelry to a friend.

פ — Peratim (פרטים) — each seif retains its own reason and conditions.

"ם — Minhag (מנהג) — seif 18 records justifications for the minhag under specified views.

7. Pitfalls to Avoid

Pitfall 1 — Makeup on Shabbos: lipstick, eye-shadow, foundation = tzovea, the melachah of dyeing. Absolute prohibition. Solution: long-lasting makeup applied before Shabbos; transparent non-coloring powder.
Pitfall 2 — Comb on Shabbos: any comb pulls out hairs = gozez (pesik reisha). The Mishnah Berurah permits only slight arranging by hand when pulling is not inevitable, or with a Shabbos-designated tool known not to pull and used without intent to remove loose hairs.
Pitfall 3 — Making braids: braiding or unbraiding hair = boneh / soser (construction of the hairstyle). Prepare the hairstyle before Shabbos.
Pitfall 4 — Very luxurious jewelry: per the Taz, even with seif 18, an exceptional piece (unique diamond) remains suspect. Case-by-case — ask the Rav.
Pitfall 5 — Do not confuse hair-threads with a wig: seif 14 concerns hair-threads fastened on the head, not the wig mentioned in seif 18. Mishnah Berurah 303:36 states this explicitly; a wig outside an eruv therefore belongs to the separate discussion of seif 18 and the ruling one follows.

8. Contemporary Practical Cases

SituationMelachah / CategoryConduct
Necklace / pendant outside an eruvתכשיטDepends on the followed ruling, the domain, and how it is worn
Bracelet / watchתכשיטPermitted; smartwatch forbidden (other reason)
Long, dangling earringsתכשיטPermitted if solid clasp; otherwise watch out lest it fall
Ring with or without a sealתכשיט or משא according to the caseThe distinctions of seifim 10 and 18 must be preserved; ask one's Rav outside an eruv
Lipstick / mascaraצובעFORBIDDEN (seif 25)
Transparent powder—Permitted per most poskim
Arranging / combingגוזזComb = forbidden; slight arranging is permitted only by hand when pulling is not inevitable, or with a Shabbos-designated tool known not to pull and without intent to remove loose hairs
Braiding / styling on Shabbosבונה / סותרForbidden (seif 26)
Sheitel outside an eruvתכשיט — seif 18Its ruling is not derived from seif 14; it depends on the followed opinion and the domain — ask one's Rav
Nail polishצובעForbidden on Shabbos; apply before
Perfume on the skin—Permitted (not melachah of tzovea since not visible)

10. The Practical Mitzvos of Siman ש״ג

For the shomeres-Shabbos woman — the checklist

  1. Prepare makeup before Shabbos (long-lasting).
  2. Prepare hair before Shabbos (stable hairstyle).
  3. Ordinary jewelry outside an eruv — follow one's Rav; seif 18 records several opinions and justifications.
  4. Very precious jewelry — verify it holds well; ask the Rav.
  5. Arranging hair — only slight arranging by hand when pulling is not inevitable, or with a Shabbos-designated tool known not to pull and without intent to remove loose hairs.
  6. No comb, no braids done on Shabbos; a part made with an instrument is forbidden, while the Rama records the minhag to be lenient with a finger.
  7. Hairpieces / sheitels outside an eruv — do not derive their status from the hair-threads of seif 14; follow one's Rav for seif 18.
  8. For halachah lema'aseh — consult one's Rav for specific cases.
