Level 4 — Daat HaRav (Alter Rebbe) — Siman קט״ז · פֵּרוּשׁ בִּרְכַּת רְפָאֵנוּ

The Alter Rebbe’s way on the פֵּרוּשׁ בִּרְכַּת רְפָאֵנוּ : the נֻסַּח רְפָאֵנוּ ה׳ וְנֵרָפֵא follows לְשׁוֹן הַכָּתוּב ; although one does not render a verse מִיָּחִיד לְרַבִּים, here it is said in the plural דֶּרֶךְ תְּפִלָּה וּבַקָּשָׁה ; and one should be stringent (יֵשׁ לְהַחֲמִיר) not to change a מִזְמוֹר שָׁלֵם — in the Habad sensibility.

Why a Level 4 devoted to the Alter Rebbe ? The Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch is not a commentary on the Mehaber (מחבר) — it is a complete, self-standing Shulchan Aruch, written by the Alter Rebbe (Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of Habad, disciple of the Maggid (מגיד) of Mezeritch). Its singularity : it combines halakha (הלכה) + טעמי המצוות + inner dimension in one work, and rules with a unique Talmudic rigor.

For Habad, the Alter Rebbe is הפוסק האחרון — his psak is the deciding authority. This page gathers the Rav’s way on siman קט״ז — פֵּרוּשׁ בִּרְכַּת רְפָאֵנוּ. In the Rav it holds in סְעִיף אֶחָד (a single seif) that explains the נֻסַּח of the בְּרָכָה : ״רְפָאֵנוּ ה׳ וְנֵרָפֵא״ follows לְשׁוֹן הַכָּתוּב (Yirmeyahu) ; and although a verse is not rendered מִיָּחִיד לְרַבִּים, he rules that דֶּרֶךְ תְּפִלָּה וּבַקָּשָׁה it is permitted, with the stringency (יֵשׁ לְהַחֲמִיר) not to change a מִזְמוֹר שָׁלֵם.

שולחן ערוך הרב, סימן קט״ז — פֵּרוּשׁ בִּרְכַּת רְפָאֵנוּ — וּבוֹ סְעִיף אֶחָד
The Alter Rebbe’s own text (Sefaria source Shulchan_Arukh_HaRav,_Orach_Chayim.116), followed by our English translation. The siman has a single seif (סְעִיף אֶחָד ; seif א → .116.1).

The meaning of the blessing Refaénou. ״רְפָאֵנוּ ה׳ וְנֵרָפֵא הוֹשִׁיעֵנוּ…״ follows לְשׁוֹן הַכָּתוּב (Yirmeyahu) ״רְפָאֵנִי ה׳ וְאֵרָפֵא הוֹשִׁיעֵנִי…״ ; therefore one says ״רְפָאֵנוּ ה׳ אֱלֹקֵינוּ״ only בִּלְשׁוֹן הַכָּתוּב. Although one does not render a verse written in the singular into the plural (אֵין מְכַנִּין מִיָּחִיד לְרַבִּים), here it is said in the plural : יֵשׁ אוֹמְרִים — the prohibition applies only when one intends to read or translate, but when one says it דֶּרֶךְ תְּפִלָּה וּבַקָּשָׁה it is permitted to adapt the verse לְפִי צֹרֶךְ הַשָּׁעָה ; וְיֵשׁ אוֹמְרִים — it applies only when reciting the whole מִזְמוֹר כַּסֵּדֶר. The ruling : יֵשׁ לְהַחֲמִיר — not to change a מִזְמוֹר שָׁלֵם מִיָּחִיד לְרַבִּים even דֶּרֶךְ תְּפִלָּה, and to change a single verse only כְּשֶׁאוֹמְרוֹ דֶּרֶךְ תְּפִלָּה וּבַקָּשָׁה.

2 · היסוד

היסוד — פֵּרוּשׁ בִּרְכַּת רְפָאֵנוּ

The yesod : the פירוש ברכת רפאנו

The Alter Rebbe’s reading of this siman unfolds around three axes drawn from the single seif. First the נֻסַּח הַבְּרָכָה בִּלְשׁוֹן הַכָּתוּב. Then the rule אֵין מְכַנִּין הַכָּתוּב מִיָּחִיד לְרַבִּים and its two טְעָמִים. Finally the שִׁנּוּי דֶּרֶךְ תְּפִלָּה וּבַקָּשָׁה and the ruling לְהַחֲמִיר.

לְשׁוֹן הַכָּתוּב — רְפָאֵנוּ ה׳ וְנֵרָפֵא

The language of the verse — Refaénou Hashem ve-nérafé

The principle. The נֻסַּח ״רְפָאֵנוּ ה׳ וְנֵרָפֵא״ follows לְשׁוֹן הַכָּתוּב (Yirmeyahu) ; therefore one says ״רְפָאֵנוּ ה׳ אֱלֹקֵינוּ״ only בִּלְשׁוֹן הַכָּתוּב (seif א).

The consequence. The wording of the בְּרָכָה is not free : it is patterned on the verse. Cf. siman קט״ו (טַעַם בִּרְכַּת אַתָּה חוֹנֵן).

אֵין מְכַנִּין מִיָּחִיד לְרַבִּים

A verse is not rendered from singular to plural

The principle. הַכָּתוּב לַיָּחִיד אֵין מְכַנִּין אוֹתוֹ לָרַבִּים ; and yet here one says in the plural what is written in the singular. Two טְעָמִים (יֵשׁ אוֹמְרִים / וְיֵשׁ אוֹמְרִים) explain it (seif א).

The consequence. The issue is not the plural itself, but the limit of the prohibition of שִׁנּוּי. Cf. siman ס״ח (שִׁנּוּי נֻסַּח הַבְּרָכוֹת).

דֶּרֶךְ תְּפִלָּה וּבַקָּשָׁה — וְיֵשׁ לְהַחֲמִיר

As prayer and supplication — and one is stringent

The principle. דֶּרֶךְ תְּפִלָּה וּבַקָּשָׁה, it is permitted לְשַׁנּוֹת הַפָּסוּק לְפִי צֹרֶךְ הַשָּׁעָה ; but a מִזְמוֹר recited כַּסֵּדֶר — אָסוּר לְשַׁנּוֹת (seif א).

The consequence. יֵשׁ לְהַחֲמִיר : not to change a מִזְמוֹר שָׁלֵם even דֶּרֶךְ תְּפִלָּה, and to change a verse only דֶּרֶךְ תְּפִלָּה וּבַקָּשָׁה. Cf. siman קי״ז (בִּרְכַּת הַשָּׁנִים).

A pointer to study. The scope of this siman — the נֻסַּח בִּלְשׁוֹן הַכָּתוּב, the rule אֵין מְכַנִּין מִיָּחִיד לְרַבִּים and the שִׁנּוּי דֶּרֶךְ תְּפִלָּה — bears on the very wording of the תְּפִלָּה. This page presents it at the level of the principle attested in the Rav’s text, adding nothing invented. For deeper study and personal conduct, learn with a Habad Rav and in the texts themselves.

The force of the Alter Rebbe’s psak

A comparison of the Alter Rebbe’s way with those of the Mehaber, the Mishna Beroura (משנה ברורה) and the Aroukh haShulchan (ערוך השולחן) on the key points of siman קט״ז. The Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch (שולחן ערוך הרב) row is highlighted — it lays out the Rav’s own sensibility as it emerges from his single seif.

Topic Mehaber Mishna Beroura Aroukh haShulchan The Alter Rebbe’s way
The Alter Rebbe’s way — ״רְפָאֵנוּ ה׳ וְנֵרָפֵא״ הוּא לְשׁוֹן הַכָּתוּב, אֵין לוֹמַר אֶלָּא בִּלְשׁוֹן הַכָּתוּב (seif א).

The table is drawn from the Mehaber’s text (Orah Haïm קט״ז, Sefaria source) and from verifiable nossei kelim (Beit Yossef, Tour, Rosh perek Hakoré Omed, Magen Avraham, Taz, Mishna Beroura, Pri Megadim, Aroukh haShulchan ; Talmud Berakhot ל״ד). The Alter Rebbe’s column rests on the real text of the Choulhan Aroukh HaRav (סְעִיף אֶחָד) reproduced in §1.

קווי היסוד של שיטת הרב

The guiding lines of the Rav’s way on this siman

Three orientations that characterize the Alter Rebbe’s sensibility on this siman. Each follows the structure : principle of the siman → the Rav’s reading → practical consequence. Each line rests on the Rav’s real text (§1).

קו א — נֻסַּח בִּלְשׁוֹן הַכָּתוּב

Line 1 — the nussach following the verse

Principle of the siman: ״רְפָאֵנוּ ה׳ וְנֵרָפֵא״ הוּא לְשׁוֹן הַכָּתוּב (seif א).

The Rav’s reading: the wording of the בְּרָכָה is anchored in the פָּסוּק ; one says ״רְפָאֵנוּ ה׳ אֱלֹקֵינוּ״ only בִּלְשׁוֹן הַכָּתוּב. Cf. siman קט״ו.

Practical consequence: keep the נֻסַּח of רְפָאֵנוּ as it was fixed, without altering it.

קו ב — שְׁנֵי הַטְּעָמִים

Line 2 — the two reasons for the leniency

Principle of the siman: אֵין מְכַנִּין הַכָּתוּב מִיָּחִיד לְרַבִּים, וְכָאן אוֹמְרִים בִּלְשׁוֹן רַבִּים (seif א).

The Rav’s reading: the Rav brings two טְעָמִים — one distinguishes לִקְרוֹת/לְתַרְגֵּם from דֶּרֶךְ תְּפִלָּה, the other distinguishes כָּל הַמִּזְמוֹר from פְּסוּקִים הֵנָּה וָהֵנָּה. Cf. siman ס״ח.

Practical consequence: understand that the leniency of the plural rests on the “prayer and supplication” mode.

קו ג — יֵשׁ לְהַחֲמִיר

Line 3 — the stringent ruling

Principle of the siman: יֵשׁ לְהַחֲמִיר שֶׁלֹּא לְשַׁנּוֹת מִזְמוֹר שָׁלֵם אֲפִלּוּ דֶּרֶךְ תְּפִלָּה (seif א).

The Rav’s reading: the Rav rules stringently — a single verse is changed only דֶּרֶךְ תְּפִלָּה וּבַקָּשָׁה. Cf. siman קי״ז.

Practical consequence: do not transpose a whole מִזְמוֹר from singular to plural, even while praying.

5 · למעשה

הלכה למעשה — מנהג חב״ד

Practical Habad conduct

Points of conduct that follow directly from siman קט״ז in the Alter Rebbe’s and Habad’s sensibility — presented at the level of the principle, referring to the Rav for the detail of the cases.

For the Habad Hassid — Siman קט״ז (פֵּרוּשׁ בִּרְכַּת רְפָאֵנוּ)

  • ① לְשׁוֹן הַכָּתוּב. Say ״רְפָאֵנוּ ה׳ וְנֵרָפֵא״ according to the fixed נֻסַּח, patterned on the verse ; do not alter the wording. Basis: SA HaRav קט״ז seif א.
  • ② אֵין מְכַנִּין. Know that as a rule one does not render a verse מִיָּחִיד לְרַבִּים. Basis: SA HaRav קט״ז seif א.
  • ③ דֶּרֶךְ תְּפִלָּה. A verse is changed only דֶּרֶךְ תְּפִלָּה וּבַקָּשָׁה, לְפִי צֹרֶךְ הַשָּׁעָה. Basis: SA HaRav קט״ז seif א.
  • ④ מִזְמוֹר שָׁלֵם. Do not transpose a מִזְמוֹר שָׁלֵם מִיָּחִיד לְרַבִּים or the reverse, even while praying (יֵשׁ לְהַחֲמִיר). Basis: SA HaRav קט״ז seif א.
  • ⑤ דִּקְדּוּק. See in this siman the demand for precision in the נֻסַּח of the בְּרָכוֹת. Basis: SA HaRav קט״ז seif א.

⚠ This section presents Habad conduct founded on the Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch, siman קט״ז (real text reproduced in §1). It does not replace a rabbinic decision for a particular case. For any concrete question — the נֻסַּח of רְפָאֵנוּ, the שִׁנּוּי מִיָּחִיד לְרַבִּים, the דֶּרֶךְ תְּפִלָּה — consult your Rav, and for Habad, a Habad Rav.
