The Siman — Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim siman
And it contains one seif (סעיף אחד): one who reads from the Torah must not leave in a parasha fewer than three verses (לא ישייר בפרשה פחות משלושה פסוקים) — because of those who leave the synagogue then (מפני היוצאים), who would think that the next oleh read only the two remaining verses ; likewise he must not begin within three verses of its start — because of those who enter then (מפני הנכנסים), who would think that the first oleh read only two verses. Gloss of the Rama: there is no difference between an open and a closed parasha (אין חילוק בין פתוחה לסתומה) ; a parasha of only two verses may be left at the start and one may stop there ; and one should always begin and end with something good (יכוין להתחיל ולסיים בדבר טוב).

This siman — שלא לשייר בפרשה פחות משלושה פסוקים — was not written by the Admour HaZaken in his Choulhan Aroukh. This bridge page (מבוא) reconstructs no text: it points to study at Levels 1-3 (Mechaber and Rama) and to the Siddur of the Admour HaZaken (Seder ha-Tefila and its Piskei ha-Siddur), the direct source of his conduct on prayer and the Torah reading.

Frequently asked questions — Siman קל״ח

Why must one not leave fewer than three verses in a parasha according to Siman 138?

According to the Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim 138:1, הקורא בתורה לא ישייר בפרשה פחות משלושה פסוקים — one who reads from the Torah must not leave in a parasha fewer than three verses — מפני היוצאים אז מבית הכנסת, because of those who leave the synagogue then, שיאמרו העולה אחריו לא יקרא אלא שני פסוקים הנשארים : they would think the next oleh read only the two remaining verses, below the minimum of three verses per aliyah.

Why must one not begin a parasha within three verses of its start according to Siman 138?

According to the Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim 138:1, וכן לא יתחיל בה פחות משלושה פסוקים — likewise one must not begin within three verses of its start — מפני הנכנסים אז לבית הכנסת, because of those who enter the synagogue then, שיאמרו שלא קרא הראשון אלא שני פסוקים : they would think the first oleh read only two verses. So one does not pause within three verses of the start of a parasha.

Is there a difference between an open and a closed parasha according to the Rama in Siman 138?

According to the gloss of the Rama (Orach Chaim 138:1), אין חילוק בין פרשה פתוחה לסתומה — there is no difference between an open (פתוחה) and a closed (סתומה) parasha for this rule. However, ופרשה שאינה אלא שני פסוקים מותר לשייר בתחילה ולהפסיק שם : a parasha of only two verses may be left at the start and one may stop there (Terumat haDeshen 22). The Rama adds ויכוין שיתחיל תמיד לקרוא בדבר טוב ויסיים בדבר טוב — one should always begin and end with something good.
