The Siman — Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim siman
And it contains three seifim (ג׳ סעיפים): in the days of the Sages of the Guemara one had the custom to translate (היו נוהגים לתרגם) so that the people would understand. The reader (קורא) reads only one verse at a time for the translator (תורגמן) ; the translator only translates עד שיכלה הפסוק מפי הקורא (once the verse has ended from the mouth of the reader) ; and the reader only reads the next verse עד שיכלה התרגום מפי המתרגם. Neither the reader nor the translator raises his voice above the other, and the reader does not help the translator, שלא יאמרו תרגום כתוב בתורה (so that they will not say the targum is written in the Torah). A minor may translate for an adult (קטן מתרגם על ידי גדול), but it is not honourable for an adult to read under a minor's translation. And האידנא (nowadays) one no longer translates, משום דמה תועלת בתרגום כיון שאין מבינים אותו — since one no longer understands the translation.
