Why a Level 4 devoted to the Alter Rebbe ? The Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch is not a commentary on the Mehaber (מחבר) — it is a complete, self-standing Shulchan Aruch, written by the Alter Rebbe (Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of Habad, disciple of the Maggid (מגיד) of Mezeritch). Its singularity : it combines halakha (הלכה) + טעמי המצוות + inner dimension in one work, and rules with a unique Talmudic rigor.
For Habad, the Alter Rebbe is הפוסק האחרון — his psak is the deciding authority. This page gathers the Rav’s way on siman קס״א — דִּינֵי חֲצִיצָה וּטְבִילָה, which unfolds in the Rav over ח׳ סְעִיפִים (eight seifim) : from the principle that whatever interposes (חוֹצֵץ) at immersion interposes at netila, to dirt and dough under the nail, a plaster, cistern-mud and potters’ clay, ink and dye, a scab of a wound, a ring (tight and loose), and the measure of netila — up to the wrist-bone.

The Alter Rebbe’s own text (Sefaria source Shulchan_Arukh_HaRav,_Orach_Chayim.161), followed by our English translation. The siman comprises eight seifim (ח׳ סְעִיפִים ; seif k → .161.k).
Anything that interposes (חוֹצֵץ) in the immersion of the whole body also interposes in netilat yadayim, for whatever the Sages instituted they instituted in the likeness of Torah law (כְּעֵין שֶׁל תּוֹרָה). One must therefore be careful to remove anything people are sometimes particular to remove. Thus dirt (צוֹאָה) under the nail when it is not against the flesh — that is, when the nail is long and extends past the flesh of the finger, and there is dirt under that overhang — must be removed before netila, since most people are particular about it out of disgust; it is therefore not nullified relative to the hand and interposes even for one who is not particular about it. Dough (בָּצֵק) under the nail, even against the flesh, interposes for everyone, since most people are particular about it when they wash their hands.
A plaster on the flesh: if there is no wound but only a mild ache (מִחוּשׁ בְּעָלְמָא) and he can remove it whenever he wishes — he must remove it before netila. But if there is a real wound — he need not wash at all at the place of the plaster, as will be explained in siman קס״ב.
Cistern-mud and potters’ clay, which stick fast and prevent water from reaching beneath them, and likewise all other mud when it is dry and stuck to the flesh, interpose both on the surface of the hand and under the nail, even against the flesh — unless it is a small amount that people do not usually remove when washing the hands: then it need not be removed for netila for a meal either. The same applies to dough and dirt: if they are so little that most people are not particular about them, they do not interpose, even not against the flesh. But if this person is particular — it interposes, even though most people are not. That people have not adopted the practice of cleaning out the mud under the nails before netila is because they are not particular to remove it when cleaning the hands in these lands; it therefore does not interpose if it is against the flesh, even cistern-mud or potters’ clay; but if he is particular about it, he must remove it. Yesh omrim: anything that most people are not particular about — even one who is particular — his view is nullified before everyone’s; one may rely on them for netila (whose essence is rabbinic), but not for immersion of the whole body (cf. Yoreh Deah קצ״ח). And if the nails are long and extend past the flesh, everyone must clean out the mud and dirt beneath them, since most people are particular about what is not against the flesh, and it interposes even for one who is not particular — unless it is so little that people are not particular about it. (On Shabbat one presses the flesh under the nail so as not to scrape the nail when removing the mud.)
One must take care, with a nail a small part of which has become detached, to trim it, for it interposes, as will be explained in Yoreh Deah siman קצ״ח.
Ink and dye, when moist — do not interpose, since they dissolve in water; when dry — they interpose, provided there is substance (מַמָּשׁוּת) of dye on the hands; if only the appearance of color remains, it does not interpose. One whose trade is dyeing — the dye does not interpose on his hands, even though there is substance of colorants; likewise a sho’het or butcher whose hands are always soiled with blood, and a fat-merchant. Although most people are particular, since most people of these trades are not, it does not interpose for them; but for another, not accustomed to it, it interposes even if he is not particular. Women who customarily dye their hands for adornment — that dye does not interpose. All this is for a minor part of the hand; but if most of the hand is covered with something of substance, it interposes even for those not accustomed to be particular.
The discharge that comes from a wound, dries, and forms a scab (גְּלִיד): if he is not particular to remove it, or it pains him to remove it — so that from now he does not intend to remove it as long as he remains in this state — he is called “not particular,” and it does not interpose for netila, although for immersion (טְבִילָה) one is stringent.
A ring, when tight on the finger — interposes; loose — does not, since water enters between it and the finger. Nonetheless, lekhat’hila one should remove the ring before netila even if loose, for we are not expert as to what is called “loose,” and people would come to be lenient even with a tight one. Bedi’avad the netila is valid if it was loose — provided he poured a revi’it at once, as will be explained in siman קס״ב. But if it was tight, the netila is not valid if he is sometimes particular to remove it, e.g. if it has a precious stone he removes at netila so that it not be soiled by the water. For a woman, even a ring without a precious stone, which she customarily removes when kneading, always interposes, even though she is not particular to remove it on account of the water. But a man, who does not usually knead, need not remove a ring without a precious stone before netila even if it is not loose, since he is never particular to remove it.
The measure of netilat yadayim: the whole hand up to the wrist-bone (הַקָּנֶה שֶׁל זְרוֹעַ), like the measure of sanctifying the hands in the Temple. Yesh omrim: they were lenient for netila, requiring only up to where the fingers join the palm. It is proper to follow the first view, for since it involves no trouble — why not remove ourselves from the dispute? It is fitting to stipulate that one accepts this not as an obligation but as a voluntary practice (רְשׁוּת), so that if once water is scarce he need not be stringent as is his custom; likewise for anything one wishes to take upon oneself as a stringency. And if one washes before the public, in a place where the custom is to wash only up to the finger-joints, he should not be stringent before them, lest it appear as “two Torahs,” God forbid, in their eyes. And if his hands were dirty — by all opinions they require netila up to the arm.

The Habad practical conduct
Points of conduct flowing directly from siman קס״א in the Alter Rebbe’s and Habad sensibility — presented at the level of the principle, referring to the Rav for the detail of the cases.
For the Habad Hassid — Siman
- ① Principle. Whatever interposes (חוֹצֵץ) at immersion interposes at netila — כְּעֵין שֶׁל תּוֹרָה. Basis: seif א.
- ② Under the nail. Dirt (צוֹאָה) and dough (בָּצֵק) under a nail that extends past the flesh → remove before netila. Basis: seifim א, ג.
- ③ Plaster. Over a mere ache, remove before netila; over a real wound, one does not wash at that spot (cf. קס״ב). Basis: seif ב.
- ④ Mud. Dry, stuck mud → interposition, except a minimal amount; the decisive criterion is הַקְפָּדָה (being particular). Basis: seif ג.
- ⑤ Ink and dye. Dry and with substance → interpose; tradesmen (dyer, butcher, sho’het) and women’s adornment → no interposition. Basis: seif ה.
- ⑥ Scab of a wound. גְּלִיד one does not intend to remove → no interposition for netila (stringent for immersion). Basis: seif ו.
- ⑦ Ring. Tight → interposes; loose → not, but lekhat’hila remove it; a woman (who kneads) always removes it. Basis: seif ז.
- ⑧ Measure. Wash the whole hand up to the wrist (עַד הַקָּנֶה שֶׁל זְרוֹעַ); dirty hands → up to the arm by all opinions. Basis: seif ח.
