Why a Level 4 devoted to the Alter Rebbe ? The Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch is not a commentary on the Mehaber (מחבר) — it is a complete, self-standing Shulchan Aruch, written by the Alter Rebbe (Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of Habad, disciple of the Maggid (מגיד) of Mezeritch). Its singularity : it combines halakha (הלכה) + טעמי המצוות + inner dimension in one work, and rules with a unique Talmudic rigor.
For Habad, the Alter Rebbe is הפוסק האחרון — his psak is the deciding authority. This page gathers the Rav’s way on siman קס״ה — דִּין הָעוֹשֶׂה צְרָכָיו וְרוֹצֶה לֶאֱכֹל, which unfolds in the Rav over ג׳ סְעִיפִים (three seifim) : one who has relieved himself and wishes to eat bread washes ב׳ פְּעָמִים (one for « אֲשֶׁר יָצַר », one for « עַל נְטִילַת יָדָיִם ») so that there be no הֶפְסֵק ; one who forgot the בְּרָכָה אַחֲרוֹנָה and urinated blesses first « אֲשֶׁר יָצַר » (tadir kodem) ; and when many recline, הַגָּדוֹל נוֹטֵל תְּחִלָּה out of honor.

הָעוֹשֶׂה צְרָכָיו וְרוֹצֶה לֶאֱכֹל. One who has relieved himself and wishes to eat — he washes twice. The first, a washing that does not render the hands fit for eating, but only to clean his hands in order to bless “אֲשֶׁר יָצַר”; the second, a valid washing to bless “עַל נְטִילַת יָדָיִם.” For if he were to do a single valid washing and bless first “אֲשֶׁר יָצַר” (because he became obligated in it first, and because it is frequent — תְּדִירָה), and then “עַל נְטִילַת יָדָיִם” — there would be an interruption (הֶפְסֵק) between the washing and its blessing. And even if he were to bless first “עַל נְטִילַת יָדָיִם” and then “אֲשֶׁר יָצַר,” there would in any case be an interruption between the washing and the “הַמּוֹצִיא,” and some forbid interrupting between them with words of business or another matter, as will be explained in siman קס״ו. And if he wishes to wash only once — he blesses “אֲשֶׁר יָצַר” immediately when he rubs his hands to clean them of their dirt, after he has poured over them a first rinsing, for then his hands are fit for the blessing, but not fit for eating until he pours over them a second water; and then he will bless “עַל נְטִילַת יָדָיִם” at the time of drying, for in this way there is here neither an interruption between the washing and its blessing, nor between the washing and the “הַמּוֹצִיא,” since the washing is not completed until he has poured the second water — and provided that he poured over both his hands at once, for otherwise he cannot rub them one against the other until he pours the second water, as explained in siman קס״ב. And nonetheless, it is more correct to wash twice, for most often people are accustomed to pour a revi‘it at once over both hands, or over each one separately in the first rinsing, and one then no longer needs a second water to purify them, and there is here an interruption. And if he did one valid washing and forgot to bless until he had poured the second water, or had poured a revi‘it at once — he shall not bless first “אֲשֶׁר יָצַר” and then wash again a second time and bless “עַל נְטִילַת יָדָיִם,” for he has already fulfilled his obligation with the first washing, and he cannot bless “עַל נְטִילַת יָדָיִם” over the second washing alone, since he is not obligated in it; and if he were to bless over the first washing after the second — he would be found to have interrupted between the washing and its blessing. Rather he shall bless first “עַל נְטִילַת יָדָיִם” over this washing alone, and then “אֲשֶׁר יָצַר,” for the blessing “אֲשֶׁר יָצַר” is not considered an interruption between the washing and the “הַמּוֹצִיא,” since it too comes for the purity of the hands. (But between the washing and its blessing one must be more concerned about interruption, for the reason explained in siman קנ״ח; and moreover, there are here two interruptions: between the washing and its blessing, and between the washing and the “הַמּוֹצִיא.”) And those who are careful not to speak between the netilat yadayim and the “הַמּוֹצִיא” but do speak between the netilat yadayim and its blessing — are mistaken, and one must warn them not to speak at all. And if he relieves himself in the middle of the meal, since he does not need to bless “הַמּוֹצִיא” — he needs to wash his hands only once. And there is no concern for the interruption of “אֲשֶׁר יָצַר” between the washing and eating, for even between the washing and the “הַמּוֹצִיא” some permit so slight an interruption, as will be explained in siman קס״ו; and one heeds the words of those who forbid only between the washing and the “הַמּוֹצִיא,” because the Sages said: whoever joins the blessing “הַמּוֹצִיא” immediately to the washing — is not harmed throughout that entire meal; but when there is no “הַמּוֹצִיא” blessing there — he need only guard against a great interruption, forbidden according to all, on account of the Sages’ ordinance that the meal follow immediately upon the netilat yadayim, as will be explained there, and as was explained in siman קס״ד.
One who ate something for which he must bless “בּוֹרֵא נְפָשׁוֹת רַבּוֹת” as the final blessing (בְּרָכָה אַחֲרוֹנָה), and forgot, and then urinated (הֵטִיל מַיִם) — he shall bless first “אֲשֶׁר יָצַר” and then “בּוֹרֵא נְפָשׁוֹת רַבּוֹת,” because the blessing “אֲשֶׁר יָצַר” is more frequent (תְּדִירָה יוֹתֵר), and whatever is more frequent than its fellow — precedes its fellow (כָּל הַתָּדִיר מֵחֲבֵרוֹ קוֹדֵם לַחֲבֵרוֹ).
If many are reclining at the meal, the greatest (הַגָּדוֹל) washes his hands first, out of honor for him (מִפְּנֵי כְּבוֹדוֹ). Only, some great ones are accustomed to wash last, so as not to interrupt with waiting until all have washed, and so as not to speak words of business or another matter, as will be explained in siman קס״ו.

The Habad practical conduct
Points of conduct flowing directly from siman קס״ה in the Alter Rebbe’s and Habad sensibility — presented at the level of the principle, referring to the Rav for the detail of the cases.
For the Habad Hassid — Siman קס״ה (דִּין הָעוֹשֶׂה צְרָכָיו וְרוֹצֶה לֶאֱכֹל)
- ① Two netilot. One who has relieved himself and wishes to eat bread washes twice : the first to clean and bless « אֲשֶׁר יָצַר », the second valid for « עַל נְטִילַת יָדָיִם ». Basis: seif א.
- ② Avoiding the הֶפְסֵק. The double washing aims to avoid any interruption (הֶפְסֵק) between the netila and its blessing, and between the netila and the « הַמּוֹצִיא ». Basis: seif א.
- ③ A single netila. One who washes only once : « אֲשֶׁר יָצַר » at the rubbing after the first rinsing, then « עַל נְטִילַת יָדָיִם » at the drying after the second water (both hands at once). It remains more correct to wash twice. Basis: seif א.
- ④ Forgot to bless. If he forgot « עַל נְטִילַת יָדָיִם » until after the second water : he blesses « עַל נְטִילַת יָדָיִם » then « אֲשֶׁר יָצַר » — « אֲשֶׁר יָצַר » being no הֶפְסֵק, since it too comes for the purity of the hands. Basis: seif א.
- ⑤ Not to speak. Guard against speaking both between the netila and its blessing and between the netila and the « הַמּוֹצִיא ». Mid-meal (without « הַמּוֹצִיא »), a single netila suffices. Basis: seif א.
- ⑥ Tadir kodem. One who forgot the בְּרָכָה אַחֲרוֹנָה and urinated : « אֲשֶׁר יָצַר » before « בּוֹרֵא נְפָשׁוֹת », for the more frequent precedes (כָּל הַתָּדִיר מֵחֲבֵרוֹ קוֹדֵם). Basis: seif ב.
- ⑦ Honor of the gadol. When many recline, the greatest washes first out of honor ; some great ones wash last, so as not to interrupt with waiting or with idle words. Basis: seif ג.
