And it contains four seifim (ד׳ סעיפים): having settled when one interrupts a meal in order to bless, the Choulhan Aroukh now asks about the person: who at the table says Birkat haMazon for everyone else? The first seif gives the rule and its exception. The rule: the greatest leads, and that holds even if he arrived at the very end of the meal — though he may hand it on to a lesser man. The exception: if there is a guest, the guest leads, even where the host is greater than he is — not for the guest's honour, but so that he may bless his host; and the Choulhan Aroukh gives the full wording. The host, for his part, may waive that blessing and lead himself; the gloss adds that he may hand it to whomever he wishes. The second seif treats a clash of precedences: a scholar must not defer to an unlearned Kohen on the ground of priesthood — though he may grant him permission; and before a Kohen who is a talmid chacham it is on the contrary a mitzva to let him go first, וקדשתו. The last two seifim turn the picture around and look at the man being offered: refusing shortens one's days — and one should on the contrary seek out the cup of blessing.

Frequently asked questions — Siman ר״א
Who should lead Birkat haMazon at the table (Siman 201)?
According to Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim 201:1, the greatest leads: « גדול מברך אפילו בא בסוף » (שו״ע או״ח ר״א:א) — which is the Gemara's own conclusion: « והלכתא גדול מברך אף על גב דאתא לבסוף » (ברכות מ״ז ע״א). The Rambam writes likewise: « וחכם גדול שבמסבין הוא שמברך לכלן אף על פי שלא בא אלא באחרונה » (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק ה׳ הלכה ט׳). He may nevertheless hand the honour on: « ואם רצה ליתן רשות לקטן לברך רשאי » (שו״ע או״ח ר״א:א). The Mishna Berura specifies which greatness is meant: « היינו הגדול בחכמה שבכל המסובין הוא יהיה המברך בהמ״ז לכולם » (מ״ב ר״א:א).
Should a guest lead Birkat haMazon in his host's home (Siman 201)?
Yes — and this is the express limit of the previous rule: « והני מילי כשאין שם אורח » (שו״ע או״ח ר״א:א), « אבל אם יש שם אורח הוא מברך אפילו אם בעל הבית גדול ממנו כדי שיברך לבעל הבית » (שו״ע או״ח ר״א:א). The Gemara states it in two clauses: « בעל הבית בוצע ואורח מברך » (ברכות מ״ו ע״א), and « ואורח מברך כדי שיברך בעל הבית » (ברכות מ״ו ע״א). The blessing owed opens with « יהי רצון שלא יבוש ולא יכלם בעל הבית הזה לא בעולם הזה ולא בעולם הבא » (שו״ע או״ח ר״א:א). But the host keeps the final word: « ואם בעל הבית רוצה לוותר… על ברכתו ולברך ברכת המזון בעצמו רשאי » (שו״ע או״ח ר״א:א), and the gloss adds: « וה״ה שיכול ליתן לברך למי שירצה » (רמ״א או״ח ר״א:א).
Must a Kohen be given precedence for Birkat haMazon (Siman 201)?
It depends entirely on the Kohen: « לא יקדים חכם ישראל לכהן עם הארץ לברך לפניו דרך חק ומשפט כהונה » (שו״ע או״ח ר״א:ב), for the Gemara treats this as a grave failing: « כל תלמיד חכם שמברך לפניו אפילו כהן גדול עם הארץ אותו תלמיד חכם חייב מיתה » (מגילה כ״ח ע״א). Granting permission, however, remains open: « אבל לתת לו החכם רשות שיברך אין בכך כלום » (שו״ע או״ח ר״א:ב). And if the Kohen is himself a talmid chacham: « אבל כהן ת״ח מצוה להקדימו שנאמר וקדשתו לפתוח ראשון ולברך ראשון » (שו״ע או״ח ר״א:ב), following « וקדשתו לכל דבר שבקדושה לפתוח ראשון ולברך ראשון וליטול מנה יפה ראשון » (גיטין נ״ט ע״ב).
