The Siman — שולחן ערוך, אורח חיים סימן ר״ג (ח׳ סעיפים) · summary, seif by seif
And it contains eight seifim (ח׳ סעיפים): the preceding siman gave the blessing over fruits of the tree; this one takes the other side — fruits of the ground — and does so through eight borderline cases, because that is where the question really arises, not with an apple or a date. Seif 1 states the bare rule. Seifim 2-3 test it on two plants that look like trees: brambleberries and the מאוזי״ש — and the gloss grafts on the criterion that governs the whole siman: only that which puts out its leaves from its wood is called a tree, not what puts them out from its roots. Seifim 4-5 go one step down: some fruits do grow on wood, yet are not enough of a fruit to deserve more than שהכל — those of barren trees, and myrtle berries. Seifim 6-7 change the question: no longer "what is it?" but "what is primary?" — preserved ginger and spices ground into sugar. And seif 8 closes the siman with the radish, which ends up hardening like wood and is still פרי האדמה.

Frequently asked questions — Siman ר״ג
Which blessing is said over brambleberries and over the banana (Siman 203)?
According to the Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim 203:2-3 they are fruits of the ground: « על תותים הגדלים בסנה בורא פרי האדמה » (שו״ע או״ח ר״ג:ב), and « על המאוזי״ש בורא פרי האדמה » (שו״ע או״ח ר״ג:ג). The gloss supplies the criterion: « דלא מקרי עץ אלא שמוציא עליו מעצו » (רמ״א או״ח ר״ג:ב), and « אבל מה שמוציא עליו משרשיו לא מקרי עץ » (רמ״א או״ח ר״ג:ב) ; the reason being « והני כיון דכלה עציו לגמרי בחורף והדר פרח משרשיו מברכים עליו בורא פרי האדמה » (רמ״א או״ח ר״ג:ב). The Talmudic root is: « אבל היכא דכי שקלת ליה לפירי ליתיה לגווזא דהדר מפיק לא מברכינן עליה בורא פרי העץ אלא בורא פרי האדמה » (ברכות מ׳ ע״ב).
Why is the fruit of barren trees and of the myrtle only shehakol (Siman 203)?
According to the Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim 203:4-5: « על פירות שמוציאין אילני סרק שהכל » (שו״ע או״ח ר״ג:ד), and « בני אסא אע״ג דבשלן והויין כפירות אינו מברך אלא שהכל » (שו״ע או״ח ר״ג:ה). The Beit Yossef gives the reason: « האוכל ממה שמוציאים אילני סרק אין מברכין עליהם אלא שהכל דלא חשיבי לברוכי בפה״ע » (בית יוסף או״ח סימן ר״ג), and for the myrtle: « וכיון דאמרי׳ הדס וערבה אינם עושים פירות שמע מינה דפירות בני אסא לאו פירות נינהו » (בית יוסף או״ח סימן ר״ג). The Mishna Beroura explains what they are: « בני אסא היינו ענבים קטנים שרגילין להמצא בהדסים » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ג:ו).
Which blessing is said over preserved ginger, over sweetened ground spices, and over radish (Siman 203)?
According to the Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim 203:6-8: « על זנגביל שמרקחים אותו כשהוא רטוב בפה״א » (שו״ע או״ח ר״ג:ו), and even when dry, since « ונראה דה״ה אם מרקחים אותו יבש כיון שע״י כך הוא ראוי לאכילה » (שו״ע או״ח ר״ג:ו) — so that « הזנגביל עיקר ומברך עליו בורא פרי האדמה » (שו״ע או״ח ר״ג:ו). As to spices: « בשמים שחוקים ומעורבים עם סוקר הבשמים עיקר » (שו״ע או״ח ר״ג:ז), and « ומברך עליהם כדין ברכת אותן בשמים » (שו״ע או״ח ר״ג:ז). Finally « צנון מברך עליו בפה״א » (שו״ע או״ח ר״ג:ח). The Talmudic sources are: « האי המלתא דאתיא מבי הנדואי שריא ומברכינן עלה בורא פרי האדמה » (ברכות ל״ו ע״ב), and « דהא צנון סופו להקשות ומברכינן עליה בורא פרי האדמה » (ברכות ל״ו ע״א).
